  1. Shrewd front offices trade down--not up. The Patriots dynasty was in large part built on this principle. The point is, there is no sure thing in the draft--assuming otherwise is arrogant and foolish. And our previous experience trading up supports this (JP Losman, John McCargo, Sammy Watkins, etc.). The draft is like a lottery,--the more tickets you have, the better your chance of winning.  To borrow an NHL analogy, more shots on goal usually results in more goals scored. I think the Bills should stay the course: re-sign/extend core players, fill needs with free agents, then draft BPA--you can rarely go wrong drafting BPA, because those are the players that are truly difference-makers.

  2. Coaching

1)You can't play not to lose: punting from 40 yd line on 4th and 5 when you're up 16-0 with all the momentum

2)Holding back blitz multiple times in obvious passing situations--if you give an NFL QB enough time--especially a good one--he will find an open WR

3)Time management at end of first half, bungling an opportunity to go for TD instead of settle for FG

4)Underutilizing Singletary (Gore should see the field only to give Singletary a breather) and Beasley

Milano--how many tackles can one guy miss?

Cody Ford--he's not a RT, he 's a RG: give him help and/or move him inside--see coaching above

  3. Part of being an effective GM also involves cutting the right people: next year Kroft, Gore, DiMarco and Murphy should not be on this team. I agree 100% that he was masterful in upgrading our OL. I still think OL is the most important position on a football team--it protects your QB (even a HOF QB can look very average when he is under pressure), opens up holes for the run game, and by controlling the clock it wears down the opposing defense while keeping your defense fresh. That's why I think we have very little chance to beat the Cowboys Thursday: their OL can dominate, and I think they will be motivated coming off a loss.

  4. 2 keys unique to this game  (winning the turnover battle and not getting too many penalties applies to every game):

1)Neutralize Von Miller--3 ways to accomplish this:

a)steady diet of Gore/Singletary, especially counter plays

b)give Ford help (and by help I don't mean Lee Smith drawing a holding penalty)

c)short routes to Beasley so that Allen won't get hit/sacked when Miller beats the OL (and it will happen--more than once)

2)Put pressure on Allen: blitz Edmunds and Milano just like last week
