  1. Actually, as Josh, the editor stated, that wasn't the entire interview. We took an interesting quote to discuss which itJosh didn't appreciate. Although, the writer of the actual story thought that was a pretty major takeaway, enough to push the entire story with a tweet about 'being a black QB.' So, I think that about covers it.

Sat down w/ Tyrod Taylor during the bye week. We talked about his haters, his motivators + being a black/mobile QB

wait, so let me get this straight. one source who started the story took the full interview. another source took that interview to make it about race because some of the interview was about race?

welcome to !@#$ed up journalism and the embarrassment that is the media today.

  2. You're correct. The story was not about race entirely, but as an editor, you obviously believed that his statements were important enough to dedicate a bold section within the piece to the comments on it. It's a hot topic in the NFL, therefore, newsworthy. We wouldn't write one single story that is essentially a recap of an entire long, well-written and interesting piece that subscribers will read for themselves. Tyrod said it, you published it, we provided our analysis, which Bills Wire does, and will continue to do. I understand your point, but you're missing ours. We all appreciate your access and we're all looking forward to the interview, but if you truly thought that that was 'taken out of context' than the full quotes should have been provided within today's story and not teased before Sunday's full post. We linked to the original story, saying Tyrod spoke on a variety of topics, so, no, we didn't make it seem like it was entirely about race.

For the record, I read the Bills Wire piece before I posted and agree that the Bills Wire piece defended his position on mobile quarterbacks.

My point is that is a small portion of the longer article and not even in the first section. While that can be one takeaway from the article, the aggregation seems like it is the only takeaway and a complete story about race. That is not the case. Other quotes also can be found in the various social media promotion.

Here is a free link to the long piece:

Here is a free link to the additional quotes that cover a wide array of topics:

Judge for yourself based on the totality of the comments.

    Thanks, Josh

  3. Those are the quotes that were chosen to release to the public, on Saturday, which was published with the following Tweet:

[bN] Blitz exclusive: “I’m held to a higher standard – and I welcome that,” #Bills QB says.

The reaction to the TBN story was objective and actually defended Taylor's stance on mobile passers. But we all know nobody bothers to read past headlines today anyway

Since I am the editor on the actual story and not what someone at another site decided to pull from it, let me say this: those are two quotes pulled from a 40-minute one on one sitdown with Taylor. And frankly, not a fair characterization of the thrust of the conversation.

The full piece along with a wide array of excerpts from the interview will be in the Sunday print edition of The Buffalo News. We also will be making more of it available to non BNblitz.com subscribers. If you are a print or digital subscriber, it is on the site now.

So maybe reserve judgment until you see the whole thing.

    Josh

I understand the point you're making. I think to me, to perceive it as objectivity, it would need to include a little more balanced assessment of Tyrod. For example, while stating the truth about the passing game, could add a sentence "the Bills had the #6 points-for offense through Week 16 and Taylor stood at #12 in Cold Hard Football Facts real Quarterback rating ( which includes both a QB's rushing and passing attempts).

When writing about draft prospects, won't you be including both pluses and minuses to their game, as well as why you think they might make logical sense to the team?

Can't argue with you there. The question pieces are moreso when players are hyped. The spotlight scouting reports highlight pluses/minuses. I wrote a piece on 4 reasons Bills would be foolish to let Tyrod walk. Part of my job is writing on newsworthy content. Trubisky declared, and the nature of the beast means throwing Tyrod in there. I have another post on Tyrod that I have planned soon about his efficiency with stats and rankings from PFF premium compared to other quarterbacks which some may like, some may dismiss. Not everyone will agree, some will have preconceived notions and I totally get that. If you take that as objectivity, partly, it is, as it's my job to present both sides. If i wrote my opinion for every single post, it'd be a blog and I'd be out of a job. I do appreciate all the commentary and insight in here though, as I agree with most of the sentiments and can see both sides of the keep tyrod/let tyrod go argument.

  5. 1. The guy doing math for me is the NFL stats - Bills avg 189.8 ypg passing, WHILE Tyrod threw for.... excellent reading comprehension, I must say.

    2. The site I write for covers newsworthy topics, ya know, like the quarterback situation that's had eveyone at each other's throats for the last 2 months.

    3. The title is 'COULD' as in, like, a question. Maybe he could, maybe he couldn't.

    4. I'm on the fence with Tyrod, but yes, it would be foolish to move on from him considering his money really isn't that big of a deal, and Jones would be the only QB on roster. That is prob one of 5 opinion posts i've written all season.

Anyway, thanks the feedback. I'll let you guys go back to comparing articles about discussion-starting topics. Appreciate the traffic :)

    Why?

because of the dead money charges I noted. Most large deals given to RBs are front loaded with higher cap hits in the first three years so the team can get out of the deal relatively easily, but the signing bonus (while prorated over the length of the deal against the salary cap) is paid in a lump sum up front to the player, so the player doesn't get screwed out of much $$ when released. McCoy has both high base AND bonuses.

I would rather trade him than lose him for nothing.

Every year this comes up with players on their last year of a deal. Team's aren't going to give up valuable assets for a player with a 1 year deal AND sign him to a long-term deal. If he doesn't sign this year, franchise tag him next year. I don't think many realize just how important Gilmore is to this defense, regardless of how talented Darby is as well.

  9. I'd also add in, doing these with Rob as a guy that loves Rex's defense but also thinks he didn't do as much as he could with the talent he had - the checks are hard. I mention that towards the end of the video - the amount of late shifts and adjusting the defense has to do means the MLB/S and the line have to make calls. Too often those calls were late because the call in was late, which led to the scheme itself becoming moot.

absolutely. And to put it out there, I'm not Rex's biggest cheerleader :)

  10. the thing is, this video wasn't intended to "pump up" neither "bash" Rex. It was to explain concepts from some of the defensive fronts he used when he was first hired. There is no right or wrong in sports debates, which is what makes them so interestng. But, in this case, the video's sole purpose was to look at the various fronts, explain the responsibilies of the various players involved in an easy to digest video for a casual fan. As to the comment saying "Rob has it figured out and the players couldn't".. We're explaining different fronts and coverage shells. I don't think Preston Brown's struggles came from not knowing the front :D

This is like arguing with people to change their minds on the eve of an election. It's too late. Minds are already made up. We've all got our own views of Rex and at this point no additional rhetoric is going to change any thing.

This season will decide who's right and who's wrong. Until then, all arguments are just hot air.

  11. Over the last few weeks I've been working on a few posts simultaneously. One was looking at where the Bills have allocated their salary cap (position-wise) and one was projecting deals for Tyrod Taylor and Stephon Gilmore that would be structured to fit under the 2016 salary cap. While working on them, ESPN published their "Future Power Rankings" in which the Bills ranked 28th. I decided to consolidate what I had already written and look at how the Buffalo Bills have set themselves up to work around the cap in future seasons. It's a bit of a long read, but even I found myself getting a bit surprised at some of what I read.

In-depth Look at Buffalo Bills Salary Cap Situation, Tyrod Taylor & Stephon Gilmore Contracts & Future Cap Flexibility

  12. Hey Rob, big fan of your work.

Could you possibly do one on Kevon Seymour in the future? He wasn't a big name circulating around at draft time, but it seems Rex has been very happy with his progress and is allegedly turning heads.

I generally don't look at CBs in college because there's a lack of film and the broadcast angle doesn't allow you to see the whole field, so it's tough to get a gauge for their actual talent/instincts bc you don't see interaction w/ safeties, coverages etc.
