  1. I said "mixed."

I really hope EJ excels, but I am worried this could be a lose-lose:

    1) He plays with no skill players (i.e., no RBs, gimpy Watkins) against a great team, and so is set up to fail.

    2) He does very well, and we have a QB controversy, which is the last thing we need.

Sometimes, QB controversies are OK. Montana-Young, Brees-Rivers, Brady-Bledsoe. Just to name a few.

Murphy said that he is closer to the situation than LaCanfora and talked to people today about it. He isn't convinced that he will be out. He said that he probably won't practice tomorrow but doesn't necessarily think that he will be out.

Some sort of mind game, maybe? But picking up a 3rd stringer seems pretty big, considering Carpenter can't kick touchbacks (I assume).

  2. I am okay with EJ if he needs to play. I think that he has improved quite a bit. He can hold down the fort for a couple of weeks if Tyrod is out. John Murphy certainly isn't convinced that Tyrod is out.

Really? EDIT: About John Murphy. What has he said?

My only thought about Ej's performance in pre-season is he may not have been facing the best defenders and defensive schemes making him look vastly improved. I hope that is not the case and he does in fact play well. I was expecting a tough game this week even with TT at the helm. Now I just have my fingers crossed and hope EJ is true to his word and will let it fly! Go Bills!!

Me, too. But the thing that was encouraging was that he was consistent, and his throws were excellent. Just perfect 99% of the time. He didn't look that good previously.

  3. I agree that TT is conservative, and more trust worthy. Was actually going to make that the an option for feeling mixed

The interesting thing, though, is we get to see what EJ can do, early in the season, and TT gets to rest. If EJ blows it, TT probably comes back sometime after the bye and we go forward knowing for sure the staff made the right choice (for those of us who questioned it). I was in the "EJ camp" because I like pocket passers over runners, but I have no idea if he can continue his play from the preseason, consistently. We will have some serious questions answered the next two weeks, which is great for everyone.

  4. I have been very critical of Taylor, but one of his better qualities is that he doesn't make huge mistakes. He is very conservative and patient with the ball (against NY, to a fault). For EJ to take the position, he is going to have to bring a big game with him. I'm excited to see if he does it. Tough matchup.

  5. That's BS, Belichick was only 5-5 versus rookie QBs going into the game (6-5 now).

    Taylor isn't a rookie.

Let me expound. If a rookie is starting against Belichick, he most likely has been proven in college to be a solid prospect. But a young QB who is handed the job is probably unproven, and needs much more experience to develop. I would rather have Luck as a rookie than Taylor in his 4th year against Belichick.

  6. Maybe its paranoia...

But after watching the first half against Miami, the Indy game, and the first drive against NE... I cant help but think NE thought that our offense was way better than they expected and found an illegal way to get an edge, either on offense or on defense. Im also extremely jaded/paranoid/whatever that the NFL is somewhat rigged, and I think our offense looks dangerous as I have ever seen.

Belichick is a genius against young, unproven QB's. He's been doing it for years. He didn't get the offense figured out; he simply made the young QB uncomfortable, almost every play. When Taylor is comfortable, he's a very good starting QB. When he's not, his game is totally off. Hopefully he learns to succeed when he's uncomfortable. I think he has shown that he can, but I've been wrong before.

  7.

I am very interested to see what they do but I do not assume they will be able to move the ball the way they did at home against the Patriots.

The Dolphins are talented on D but I am more concerned about a potential loss of intensity after the highly charged matchup last week.

First off, the national spotlight is off......nobody cares about this matchup of 1-1 teams.

And I hope Taylor isn't overconfident because of his strong 4th quarter play vs NE and I hope Shady comes out with the fire he did against NE and doesn't revert back to his uninspired form from the opener.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a flat performance from the offense.

If they come out executing and focused, I will take that as big props to the coaching staff.

If they don't, it will be just the opposite and Rex living up to the "Bad Rex" reputation.

It is a later afternoon game, though. Many more people will see it than a 1PM game, and I think people are interested outside of Buffalo and Miami to see what the AFC East is all about. It's obviously much lower key than last week, but I think it will make some waves because whoever loses is essentially the big underdog in the division.

  8. It's really odd, because while I was watching the game, my friend and I were analyzing every throw. It was interesting that we would say, "Whoa, nice strike there" one play, then just groan the next. The plays called in the second offensive drive were atrocious. We just sat said and looked at each other, thinking we were just going to give NE the game.

It was an all-around awful effort by everyone (coaches, players, and refs), so it is amazing that we actually mathematically made it a game. I really don't know what to expect this week. Miami hasn't looked great, but they have a ton of talent, and it is their home opener.

  9. Yup. Can't bet money because it's illegal, but human trafficking is not a problem ;)

Can I get in on this? I've got one starting college next year and would love someone else picking up that tab ;)

But there are some bad teams on the Bills schedule this year. I certainly wouldn't bet against 11 (if I wanted to win that is).

:worthy: I never even thought of that (in the "ironic" sense). Hilarious!

Wasn't thinking I had to say this but I don't want any of your children.

    Too late. Bets are in.

  10. that was the first game Tyrod has had any adversity that we have seen. he seemed unstoppable in the preseason and week 1. you forget that it was only his 2nd ever start! he might have some growing pains and he figures out what he can and can't do. hopefully he learns and continues to get better, that's all you can ask of him

This is what concerns me. He looked like a rookie when he faced pressure. I was under the impression that he had enough experience to not "panic" in the pocket. He definitely panicked, on numerous occasions. I have been open about my belief that EJ is our best pocket passer, and the best pocket passer should be the starting QB, but I will always stay objective. Right now, it is obvious you stick with Taylor. I can give a ton of reasons why, but that's irrelevant.

This game will tell us a lot: on the road, good defense, coming off a horrible loss. I'm ready to see how Taylor responds. He has, at the very least, shown he is a capable backup. I want to see him consistently make plays through the air under pressure. He has all the tools, and can make all the throws.

  11. For those that don't know me, I'm SteveStojan. I've been here a while. I'm from Buffalo but don't live there anymore. I'm the definition of pessimist when it comes to the Bills. This year is different.

I think my perspective is better as a die hard Bills fans who doesn't live in WNY anymore. Not listening to WGR and also hearing perspective from people who are fans of the Skins, Steelers, 'Boys, and yes Pats (without a stupid asterisk because they are the best team in football.) leaves me with this:

Tyrod is the real deal. I've never been more happy with a QB since JK. He throws a frozen rope on the long ball and can run. Shady has looked awesome considering he has one semi-flat tire. Our WRs are top 5 in the league. We got beat, by a TD, by the best team this century when our defense didn't show up. We let up 40 points. That won't ever happen again.

So, who wants to bet. I take 11+. You take 10 and under.

Name the wager. It can't be straight cash since, ya know, that's illegal and all. But name it. Bills win 11.

    That is all.

I am originally from Buffalo as well and have lived in IL since 1999. If our QB situation stabilizes, it's highly likely we get 11+.

I'd be tempted to let you, do I have the choice of which kid?

Sweet, we can bet kids? I've got 4 daughters, so technically 3 backups. Take your pick if I lose the bet. But if I win, you have to take 2 of them.

  12. I just think Cassel was the veteran that would replace Tyrod if something happened mid-game, and EJM would start the next game.

Ryan mentioned that "they wish they had figured out earlier" that EJM would have a better chance to develop during practices as the #2. Then when Dallas called they had a chance to get something in return for Cassel.

I always thought this as well. Some people called me stupid. Figures.

  13.

No need to apologize for questioning the usage of the word "trust".

As to "All-22", this is the coach's tape that comes out on Tuesdays (commonly referred to as "coach's film" or "game film"). It uses the high cameras that show the entire boundary of the field of play, as opposed to the video broadcast on which we watch the game.

Wow. I never claim to know everything, but I can't believe I never heard that phrase. Of course, my career ended in high school in the 90's, and we didn't have many angles.

This is truly a quality forum.

  14. Scoring 32 points means almost nothing. Miami scored 34 points on us in a playoff game in 1991 (44-34, 1990 season), and it wasn't a game. We handled them from start to finish. When your offense is playing well, you can take chances on defense or let up in other areas to extend time. If New England struggled on offense, I can guarantee we do not score 32. They find ways to win, period. If they score only 30, they keep us to 29. They were clearly the better team, and never let us threaten the lead when it came down to it. Any time we came close to taking the lead, they crushed us.

Really? It sounded more to me like a guy saying that the entire offense needs to get accustomed to playing with each other.

Tyrod needs to trust the OL, the WRs need to trust Tyrod, etc. He even went on to say that they hadn't played together the entire preseason.

It really doesn't read like he's criticizing his QB; it reads like he's saying that once the team gets on the same page, they'll have more trust that things will come together as the game plan intends.

It was. I clarified in another post. For me, I can take hearing that my WR's and QB aren't on the same page, and maybe don't "trust" each other yet, but the QB and o-line are special. These are the warriors, and QB is the general. The first thing that should happen before taking the field is to have trust in your line. That's all I meant. I don't disagree with you at all.

Watching the All-22 TT gets happy feet, takes off laterally, hanging his tackle out to dry, also means he can't look down field, or at least halves it. He needs to do a better job of climbing the pocket vertically, which many times he could have done, but chose not to too quickly.

If you don't mind me asking, what does "All-22 TT" mean? Thanks!

  15. Sammy's quote is pretty damning. It wasn't insulting, but saying your QB isn't trusting his line is very strong (and I 100% thought the same thing while watching the game).

But stats can be used in any way. The line was not good, and neither was the playcalling. Just thinking about the game, I bet the reason he had so much time was that he extended many plays. The problem, however, is that when he extended the plays, he rarely turned it into a positive. In fact, I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that all of his interceptions were after quite a bit of time waiting and/or extending the play. He hasn't yet shown he can throw under immense pressure. He has shown he can throw quite well when not pressured.

Taylor made rookie mistakes. I was under the impression that his experience under Flacco made him somewhere in between a rookie and veteran. That was not the case Sunday. We will know much more this week. If he continues rookie errors, it will be a long season for us.
