  1. Oh stop it sweetheart. We still love you!

I hope this comment was half joking. Because its demeaning to talk to women that way.

As for the original apology, it shows character. There is mis/disinformation posted on here daily. Might be the first time Ive seen someone offer a genuine apology.

  2. Quoted on Buffalobills.com, when referring to the need to institute blitz packages as early as OTA's, here is what the head-coach of the Bills said:

“Everyone in OTAs now is doing it,” said head coach Doug Marrone. “We have to get our players ready. You think about how training from an offensive standpoint, we’re getting the technique correct and then you’re going forward and working on those technique and fundamentals. Then for the quarterback he’s going to throw a route versus air. Then the next point is decision making. So the faster we can get to situations where is it zone, or is it pressure? Now they have to make decisions on the field and the better they’ll become and the better the evaluation for us.”

Whew. I can't follow that. We could be in for some painful post-game press conferences. But, I suppose that doesn't really matter. If he wins, I could care less whether he puts a grammatical sentence together.

    Are you serious?

  3. You would have despised me 3 years when Gailey was hired, as I knew the impending failure that was ahead.

Marrone is a complete unknown. I'm willing to give him a chance. Manuel was a gutsy pick. There seems to be a change in philosophy about only 'high character' guys. But, there's too many remnants of a failed organization that continue with this team. I have to be skeptical, at least.

Oh, no way I was happy about Gailey either. But I wouldnt have been happy with another retread this year either. Did not want Lovie at all. Marrones path is similar to Harbaughs turning a program around and the type of leader who has charisma. Im hoping that translates to the nfl. But cant disagree with your point about remnants of the failed organization in the past sticking around. I just wonder how much Ralph did or did not influence Brandon before this year. If Brandon was Ralphs "yes" man and brandon wanted to run things differently, it appears he has started to this year. There is always reasonable logic to be skeptical about this organization based on the last decade plus. But my offseason optimism is almost like a highly developed coping strategy. Although, Im pretty sure denial is the lowest form of coping.

  4. Eh, I'm not feeling the 'change' that the Bills are trying to sell.

Russ is still Ralph's guy. He hired one of his Syracuse buddies with Marrone. The plan was always for Whaley to replace Nix, and he shoulders some of the blame for this team being awful. And most importantly, the team still looks bad.

How does this team still look the same? Their are 3 changes that can happen in the NFL that would be considered the biggest changes you can make :GM, Coach, QB.

All have been changed. We've also added a legit NFL defensive coordinator, seriously solidified the lack of talent at WR, oh, and Ralph stepped down and Russ is now in charge carte blanch.

I dont think I have ever seen an optimistic post under your name. Time to get positive and get with the program. Be disappointed if this doesnt work out, but for now, enjoy it.

  5. Your obvservations are accurate.

In addition he won a battle of wills with the iron-jawed Don Shula.

Many might not know but in Shula's 2 Super Bowl victories, he only allowed Hall of Fame QB Bob Griese a grand two-game total of less than 30 pass attempts.

In spite of Shula's repeated attempts to reign in Marino and restore some balance to the offense, Marino insisted on audibling to pass plays at an alarming rate.

Not much has been written about this subtext…. it's almost like no one wants to tarnish the legacy of either man but I believe that Marino's obstinate behavior was a reason for Shula's retirement.

    Interesting insight.

As much as I hated Dan Marino (because the rivalry was so strong back then) I have to admire the guy. He had an amazing arm and the quickest release. So many times I can remember that I thought we had him for a sack and hed release the ball with a quickness I dont think Ive ever seen again. His deep balls were fun to watch. He didnt lob a bomb. He threw lazers

The lack of championships is the only thing holding him back in my opinion. There was nothing great about Joe Montanas game in my opinion except for the fact that the guy was a winner. Plain and simple, Montana was a winner. And I would take a winner any day over a guy who possibly the most accurate arm in the history of the nfl

As SJB pointed out, sounds like there is more to the Marino story then what meets the eye.

  6. Buddy said, in a sound clip, that it went "very bad," with Dansby. I got the feeling that he wanted a lot more money than they were offering.

The guy clearly thinks very highly of himself and what he should be making from statements he has made in the past. As much as I would love to have his talent on the team, I wouldnt want a guy who didnt want to be in Buffalo. He didnt really seem like the type that would embrace his role here. He probably could have gotten a 3-4 year contract here. Instead he signed a 1 year contract in AZ. He doesnt care. At this point hes a mercenary in it for the biggest paycheck.

  7. NFL network total has posted on screen for NFL ACCESS coming up "Bills QB Ryan Nassib 1 on 1". Won't

let it go or is it a Freudian slip? Makes one think it is a case of wishful thinking. Color me amused.

I understand why the Bills dont get much national press. We've sucked for 13 years, and every time the Bills start to look good, they suck again. But with that said, the NFL network did a piece on rookie qbs and they skipped over EJ right to Geno, then to Barkley, then changed directions and started talking about Andrew Luck.

Not for nothing, but you'd think they would include the first qb picked in the draft in the segment. The media hates the Bills. They make fun of the Bills constantly on the NFL network. Only way to shake that is for the Bills to go out and earn some respect.

  8. Ya I don't know, all the Colts fans I've talked to said he was terrible and most think they got the better deal out of the trade.

I highly doubt the guy can be any worse than Sheppard. Keith Ellison is the #1, 2, and 3 worst all time starting linebacker for the Bills but Shepp could be 4.

  9. Everybody seems to be saying its not a big deal that he wants to be here, because other qbs have wanted to be here in the past and look how that turned out. But look at the flip side of the coin. If EJ did not want to be here, and had a bad attitude about Buffalo, his chances of success would be slim to none. Attitude has a huge impact on everything in life.

I am so happy we didnt draft Geno Smith. That guys has some serious emotional baggage. He seems like a very sensitive, and defensive guy. On top of the fact that there is alot of speculation out there that the reason he dropped so far is because when coaches interviewed him he acted like a know it all and gave the impression that he feels like he is so good he had nothing to learn. That is going to be a mess in New Jersey.

I think the stars are aligning in Buffalo. The fact that Bruce is EJ's godfather and he is happy to be here makes me feel good. We finally have some NFL caliber talent at WR and we have a defensive coordinator who actually knows how to create a modern scheme. Something feels different about this year. I dont see this team going to the Superbowl or the playoffs this year, but I think they will develop and identity and be fun to watch. Lots of young talent that have all the tools to be great players if the coaches can reach them and teach them. Big things baby. Big things coming.

  10. Being a fan is feeling apart of the experience/team that you're rooting for on a regular basis. You have a sense of belonging...Hence your participation on this message board. The fans, the players, coaches, and personnel all feed off of the game day environment. The game would deminish if the filled stadiums were removed. 4th quarter in a preseason game like? A prophet? More like a gross exaggeration....I'd have season tickets if in the Buffalo area.

Yeah, I feel like it would make the game almost clinical in a sense.

  11.

    Thanks for posting that.

I would agree that a QB's success can be dependent on which team they land with but I think that EJ would be successful in any system.

He has great arm talent, intelligence, and athletic ability. He ran some read option but he also played in a modified pro-style offense and took many snaps directly from center.

On the other hand I think guys like Barkley, Nassib, and Glennon are much more system-dependent.

    I agree.. Good post.

  12. I can see the Bills cutting Easely if he doesnt perform in camp. As far as trading receivers, I think the Bills drafted all of these guys on purpose. Marrone plans on running more plays per game, and with all of the speedsters on our team now we can rotate in fresh legs while running deep patterns, and tire out the CBs on the opposition. These nfl corners are in peak physical performance but try keeping up with tj graham at top speed 40-50 yards down the field 2 plays in a row, then goodwin comes in fresh and runs top speed 2 plays in a row 40-50 yards down field. At that high speed, I dont care who you are, sprinting as fast as you can 40-50 yards down the field 4 plays in a row will cause some fatigue. If we get the matchup against the same corner each time, they guy will be sucking wind and will not be able to keep up. Thats just one scenario. But keeping fresh legs in throughout the game will have an advantage in itself.

  13. For all "intensive purposes," yes.

BTW, Davis is still in damage control mode. This morning on Redskins Live! he said the following:

I was a sales rep in Boston for the top sales division for a fortune 100 company based out of Rochester. You can probably guess what company it was. I have a 4 year degree. I was probably 27 at the time - this was a 4 years ago.. I had a meeting to sell HR software to a top law firm in Boston. I literally said, "for all intensive purposes" and the group I was presenting to started laughing. One of the ladies asked me to repeat the statement. I said, "for all intensive purposes". They obviously got a huge laugh out of it, I was completely embarrassed but somehow I still closed the deal. I immediately called a friend to make fun of myself for being an idiot.

  14. There's just too much made of the whole "will he learn to be an NFL QB". We already know he can run the read option. If Washington and Seattle can install that offense and be successful with it, and San Fran, then Buffalo could, too. I'm not saying they will or should. We know he has the ability to escape pressure, to make plays with his feet. We know he can make fairly accurate throws and he's not limited to throwing within 15 yards - like his predecessor. Hackett and Marrone will design an offense he can run - and with the talent we now have at WR, and the decent O-line, and Spiller and Jackson, EJ is going to be able to make a play here and there and at the very least keep us in games.

I expect he'll be able to do much more, and that he'll be considered in the same class as Kaepernick and Newton, but it's not like he's been drafted to go play in one specific offense that only the very smartest and the QB's who are best at reading the whole field can operate. This offense will SUIT HIM.

    Great post

  15. Someone needs to explain to me why we had safety Duke Williams rated as a better move for this organization than to take Nassib in the 4th round. THE FOURTH ROUND !

Look what happened to the Seahawks last year, they took a QB in the third round (and got blasted for it by the Kipers of the world) even though they had their QB situation shored up. They open the competition in training camp and find that their third round draft pick Russel Wilson is quickly grasping the NFL game and it changes their entire team to a serious playoff contender.

Forget all the "well we coached him at SU so he's a good fit" crap, I don't care if he played for Kutztown State--in a time when all we talk about is getting a good quarterback for this team, here's a guy that was VERY highly rated by some experienced NFL men sitting there in the fourth freaking round and we decide to take a safety that won't even see the field this year.

The right call was to take Nassib, release Tarvaris Jackson, and go into training camp with Kolb, Manuel and Nassib. May the best man win.

This league is about maximizing your chances to get a franchise quarterback. It's that simple.

If you think I'm wrong, send me Duke Williams stats in three years and I'll admit it.

This makes no sense. They picked their franchise qb. And the comparison to Russel Wilson picked in third competing against a newly signed FA is much different than drafting a qb in the first round because you think he is going to be your qb for the next 10 years. You dont pick a guy in the first round, tell him you want to develop him to be the face of the franchise, then pick a qb in the fourth and try to do the same.

  16. I trust that Marrone and co will make the right decision on whatever is best for his development. He might be nowhere near ready to start and read NFL defenses or he might have a good handle on the offense and what reads to look for. Based on watching his highlights, I think they will have to work with him a little bit on ball placement as well.

But if the Bills offense and NFL defenses are too far over his head, then I would sit him and let him learn. I dont care how he is developed, I just want him to be put in a position to reach his full potential. I would love to see him start this year, because its like having a new toy and not being able to play with it. But I wont be upset if they feel he needs a year to develop.

The good thing is there will be nice qb competition at camp. May the best man win.

  17. Grow up...every post you make is about how much the team sucks. Either get over it and move on, or find another team to root for....being this miserable is unhealthy.

Thank you. I cant stand it when fans come on here just to b^tch and talk about how awful the Bills are and how everything the Bills do is bad. This is entertainment and being a fan is voluntary. If being a fan of the Bills fills you up with this much negative energy, find something new to do with your free time.

  18. EJ seems to have more upside. Even if he doesn't work out - many 1st round QBs don't as we all know - I appreciate that we rolled the dice on EJ. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Exactly. EJ has freakish speed for a qb, great size, and a cannon. He was drafted for his upside, not to start day 1. Even if EJ doesnt work out, we had to take a shot at a QB . So why not take a shot on the guy who has the most upside? If the coaches get him coached up and put together, he will be much more of a threat than Barkley, Nassib, or Geno. He has personally said he will do whatever it takes and work hard to get there. And equally as important, he is genuinely happy to be a Bill. Attitude has a lot to do with success in life. Whether it is the NFL, a career, or personal relationships.

I wanted Nassib, I thought he could start from day 1. Because of that, I never even watched or read about EJ. After watching and reading as much as I could find on him, I feel like this was the best decision for the BIlls. Its like the difference of drafting Andy Dalton to start right away or Kapernick who needs a little time but has a much higher ceiling. Id much rather have Kapernick. EJ can be that guy. I just hope the coaches dont throw him into the fire before he is ready. Let's have Kolb run the offense and coach Geno up as much as possible.

  19. I gave the Bills' draft a D. Below is my reasoning.

    1. E.J. Manuel. Like Losman, Manuel has great physical tools. Also like Losman, Manuel did nothing in college to demonstrate he could handle the mental complexity associated with NFL offenses. On the contrary: even though his college offense was very simple, he still struggled with pocket awareness. If he doesn't have the bandwidth to handle a simple offense + pocket awareness, how is he supposed to handle the NFL?

This pick hurts us twice. First, the pick itself has been squandered. Secondly and more importantly, the Bills are very unlikely to do much of anything at the QB position as long as they're deluding themselves into thinking Manuel is the answer. They even passed on Nassib and Barkley in the third!

2a. Robert Woods. A good pick.

2b. Kiko Alonso. The Bills chose him significantly higher than where the consensus had him slotted. This is not the first time the Bills have taken a player much earlier than he was slotted. Previous examples include Donte Whitner, Torrell Troup, and T.J. Graham.

    3. Marquise Goodwin, WR. I have nothing against Goodwin as a player. But the Bills had already addressed the WR position with Woods; plus they had Johnson and Easley on the roster. Spiller and Chandler can also be used as receiving threats. Maybe "luxury pick" is too strong a phrase to describe this selection. But going into the third round, the Bills had a decent stock of talent at WR, and nothing at all at QB. That being the case, why not take Barkley? Even if there's a 70% chance his arm will never recover, a 20 - 30% chance of getting a franchise QB is well worth the use of a third round pick!

Its just so easy to be negative, isnt it? Why not hope for the best? You have plenty of time to complain about it if this draft doesnt work out. But for now, why wouldnt you hope that it works and have positive thoughts? Save the negative energy for the Jets and and Pats.

  20. I think that Kaufman has a better chance than that of making the roster. He looks like Nelson type to me but he looks like a better high point guy than Nelson. I think his odds of making the team are imporved because of our tight end situation. They are going to need a red Zone guy. I like the idea of a 6'5" QB throwing to a 6"5" Wr. 4.6 time in the 40 is plenty fast for this type of receiver. 4.6 would be a very fast TE and that is how you are going to use him in short yardage and in red zone.

Kaufmans highlight tape is ridiculous. That guy put up some numbers. He is a damn good receiver.

  21. Nix has said he needs some polish and he was drafted for his high potential. The only way I would want him to start is if he flat out beats Kolb and shows a high level of understanding of our offense and pro reads. Otherwise, a year sitting and learning will be great for his development. I see him as more of a Kapernick type player than Russel Wilson. As much as Id love to see him start from day 1, Id much rather we didnt throw him into the fire until hes ready.

There was a good program on NFL network yesterday where first round qb picks talked about starting their rookie season and the amount of pressure they felt. And the qb's that were on the show were #1 overall picks, not qb's picked up at 16 for their potential. They talked about how their is so much pressure to come in and "save" the franchise or "be the man" so it made them feel like they needed to make huge plays all the time. They would force throws when they werent there and always felt like they needed to make that big play.

I trust the coaches to make the right decision. As much as I want to watch our new franchise qb play, I would not at all be upset if he sat for a year and learned. Keep in mind this an all together new offense for this team so everyone will be making mistakes not just the qb. Kolb might be able to come in and distribute the ball better and run the offense more efficiently which will help with everyones development on that side of the ball.

  22. Certain things are becoming clearer from both actions and words when it comes to the Bills offense this coming year.

1] I was perplexed and not happy when we had no interest in David Nelson as a WR but it makes sense now, no speed. We want guys that can get downfield quickly and have homerun potential. Donad Jones had marginal speed but trouble tracking the ball in the air and going up and getting it.

2] Why not Nassib and why EJ? Downfield passing. EJ throws a nice deep pass, this was probably Nassib's biggest deficiency, at least he didn't show good touch on the long ball. Plus EJ can scramble better and can get the ball downfield when flushed out, and may have more room to run with the vertical game.

3] The K Gun. There have been numerous references with regards to Hackett's familiarity with it and wanting to infuse it. The K Gun worked best with Lofton and Beebe being speedsters on the outside and then Andre getting the most balls. Beebe never really caught a lot of passes but was the threat and spread the field.

4] Akin to 3 above, Marrone has recently talked about a WCO but he wanted to exploit it vertically and not horizontally the way a lot of teams do.

5] The Saints offense. Where Marrone grew up as an offensive coach under Sean Payton. They spread the field and usually had five different guys with different talents exploiting different defenses. But most had big play ability. Part of it, the big part, was Brees obviously. But they still had that vertical strategy to open up the field with a lot of different weapons.

6] No fullback. We may or may not still look at Corey Mac but we have only signed Frank Summers. Marrone mentioned maybe not using one and having a DT block in short yardage plays. We went after Delanie Walker and Fred Davis in FA but spoke about moving Davis around and he was enthusiastic about the offense when talking with the Bills. The TE we drafted has 4.5 speed and will be used as HB/TE/FB hybrid, the same skills that Dorin Dickerson possesses. He is also very fast.

7] There have been several reports from people that have spoke to Hackett and Marrone about this offense being innovative and something that hasn't been seen before. They have mentioned the components and influences: The K Gun, WCO vertical, up tempo/no huddle, the read-option, the Saints, Syracuse of second half of last year, even the Gruden camp with Nassib which showed Hackett's creativity.

Who knows if this offensive soup will mesh into something good or a disaster. But it should be really fun. Even as late as yesterday I thought strongly that Kolb would be the opening day starter. But it's possible, on reflection, that they may just want to throw this all together at the same time and spring it on the league and let the kids grow together in it.

I enjoy reading your posts. You are one of the few posters on here with a glass half full attitude. Keep on keepin on.
