Huh? Why would you enter negotiations with 2 players if you don't have enough for both? Wouldn't it make more sense to figure out 1 player, in this situation it's Byrd because his franchise tag is less so therefore less of a cap hit? And at the same time cut and make more room under the cap. Then go back to that 2nd player with an actual number.
Signing Levitre/Byrd and entertaining other FA's on 9 million, is not possible.
Did you read my post or just see my name and respond? I said "I never said they should have entered negotiations or that they would have enough money. I said the theory that the Bills needed to sign Byrd first to see what money they had left over is hogwash."
My point was that they knew from the beginning that they were probably going to have to Franchise Byrd. And if they didn't, they would be signing him to a deal close to the amount they would franchise him for. So they KNEW they weren't going to have money for Levitre. So tell him.
Please read my post this time before responding.

Actually you are completely wrong. You don't run a business based on what if's and scenarios. On Feb 13 Mark Gaughan published what the Bills actual cap number was at the time, $116 million. With the cap being set at $121 million at that time and the Bills being able to roll over about $9 million that left their available cap number at about $130 millions. Leaving the Bills with about $14 million to sign free agents. Subtract rookie salarys from the draft, which is around $5 million, that reduces the number to $9 million. You don't walk into negotiations for a FA like Levitre with only $9 million in space to work with. Especially if you value Byrd over Levitre and are trying to work his contract out. This is exactly "basic math" as you put it.
But yea, people running the Bills finances, I'm sure don't have a high school diploma. Hell this is just child's play.
You made my point for me. The Bills KNEW how much money they were going to have to spend for Byrd and Levitre, ball park. They absolutely could enter negotiations with that ball park number. OR they could know they weren't going to have enough money and inform his agent that it simply wasn't going to work.
They did neither.
Perhaps you need to re-read my post. I never said they should have entered negotiations or that they would have enough money. I said the theory that the Bills needed to sign Byrd first to see what money they had left over is hogwash. They knew a very good ballpark number of what they were going to have to give to Levitre after Byrd was franchised.
As far as your snide comment about the Bills finance guys not knowing what they're doing - has ANYONE in the Bills organization shown over the last decade that they know what their doing? If this was the Packers, you can make that comment. If this is the Patriots, you can make that comment. If this was the Steelers, you can make that comment. But it's not. It's the Buffalo Bills. The most inept organization, top to bottom, in the entire league over the past decade plus. So NO, I don't trust their finance guys. And as far as childs play goes, I think even a child could have gotten us to a playoff spot at least once over the past 13 years.

All the talk on the first page about signing one first so you know what you have to negotiate with is a bunch of hogwash. You don't have to have a degree in mathematics to run numbers based on scenario. You don't have to even have a high school diploma. This is basic math.
Stupid Bills doing the same stupid things.

Just a hunch, but I predict he goes to NYJ in 2014 after Rex is canned. Imagine that..facing Chan Gailey's offense twice a year (licking my chops).
I wouldn't want that.
Chan is a great OC. He just can't head coach at the same time.

The cowboys defense that had a ton of top talent?
Do you realize how injured they were this season? 5 of the 11 starters spent time this year on the injured/out list.
Rob Ryan likes to play a gambling type of defense but did not have the talent execute his vision thus a defense ranked in the mid teens. It is arrogant thinking like his that dooms coaches. Know your men and their talents and design a scheme that accentuates their strengths and puts them in the best position to succeed. I doubt he will get a Def Coordinator gig this year. He might have to sit out the season or take a job as a position coach. Too bad his brother Rex did not get canned.
Bahahahahahahahah
He will be hired within the next 2 weeks.

I like Pettine a lot, but now than Ryan is available I think he is the guy we need to get quick.
-
This is a no brainer. Hire the guy immediately. He took a crappy Cowboys defense and made them decent. He is a damn good coach.

There is hate for Poz all over this thread... I get it that he's not Patrick Willis but Poz would easily be the best LB on the Bills right now and it's not even close. That said, Tao got a reality check last night
Agreed.
Problem is that Poz is a better player than Teo is. So the question is, would you spend the 8th pick, or even a 1st round pick, who is a slightly worse version of Poz? I wouldn't.

I want this guy no where near the Bills on draft day. Let someone else take him. He is Poz 2.0 but not as good.
As another poster mentioned, if he was on Alabama, he wouldn't be in the starting lineup. Many people tried to make the point that it was because of his defensive line. Well... the LB to his left played decently well and he had the same defensive line in front of him.
No thanks to Teo.

I'm really upset McCarron isn't declaring.
-
nope...already declared he is coming back......gonna three-peat.
That's too bad.

Notre Dame's TE can play.
-
And Te'o can carry his luggage.
Lol

Wow.. I'm really liking Mccaron.

Ok I'll take Barrett Jones on the bills.

Normally I would agree with this hands down every time but Bama's OLine has two 1st round picks this year and will have at least 2 more in the next two. And they are HUGE. I would pit them against KC's D line and bet they could hold their own right now. I wouldn't say that about anyone else in the country though.
GO BILLS!!!
Nah. Even 1st rounders take a while in the NFL to get adjusted. They get beat a bunch during training camp and their first year in the league.
KC would beat Bama by about 30.

Fair enough. My only point is that you can't judge a player on one game. Payton manning made that clear to me in 1998, and i've stuck with that philosophy. In any event, I'm opposed to drafting an lb in the top 12 in pretty much all circumstances. I'm probably forgetting some, but the last one i recall panning out was urlacher (and he played safety in college).
Ok.

Biggest margin of victory was 36 points in 2005.
Love the knowledge. Thanks man.

Gotta think he has a shot...as Brent said, McCarron also
Mussberger got another comment in about McCarron's girlfriend....love it
Lmao you would think the producer would tell him to cut that out.

Appreciate the links, but I'm not talking about Teo anymore.

Anyone else hoping Alabama just pours it on in the 2nd half and get the biggest ass whooping in Championship history?
What is that record, anyone know?

What a beautiful throw.

In what way? If there isn't money, there isn't enough money. No amount of negotiating would change that.
