I said he was acceptable as a placeholder. A guy to fill the position while the team acquires and grooms a real #1, a guy who takes some of the pressure of a young QB while he's adjusting to the NFL, a mentor who can help teach the kid about what t's like to play in this league.

I'd rather have both. Fitz was acceptable as a placeholder QB and probably would have been an excellent mentor for EJ. In turn that would have been great grooming for Fitz to transition to coaching, something where his intangibles would have found their best outlet.

Thing about Thurman his intangibles, yeah he didn't put up quite as many 100 yard games as some others but when he did the team won(I think they lost like 2 games when he broke the century mark) He was the engine for the No-Huddle and he roared for years...

What has barely been mentioned is that in '95 when injuries forced the Bills into using Steve as a WR he responded by being pretty spectacular and ending up on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Another thing that nobody has brought up is the *other* anecdote told about Steve, how the veteran Bills would bet the DB rookies they couldn't cover the ST "scrub" and then pocket easy money when he he promptly smoked them. I have no doubt the guy would have been a quality WR if he jad played he position regularly throughout his career.

Collins/Losman/Edwards (all were given too much time to fail)
Collins? He was draftedin '95, backed up Kelly for 2 years(and to be fair looked much improved the second year) and had one years as a starter before he and the Bills parted ways. Three years isn't exactly a long time, especially for a number two QB pick who seemed to be ascending by the end of '96...

I'd have to agree with the OP here, this is a much much improved team but they they have work to do. that being said i think i can legitimately say they probably were able to skip a year or two in the rebuilding process, at this piint they merit serious talk about the playoffs but not the superbowl, just not enough depth and a few holes to fill yet. The flip side of that is they're finally a good team that's learning and improvong week by week and taking the fans for a great ride. Best I can say is enjoy this season and look forward to the next, remeber the bills have plenty of cap space fo tthe off season and for the first time in years no glaring weaknesses, just a few areas that need polishing.

He comes from a school with a long tradition of Football, he was drafted almost as an afterhtough, his arm is ok at best but god he's cool in the pocket, lots of football smarts, reads defenses perfectly, has a knack for seeing the open reciever so he spreads the ball around and what a leader!
So here's the question? Am I talking baout Fitz or Montana?
I'll be the first to admit Fitz has a long way to go but what a start... Do who does he remind you of?

Post playing career I'd love to see Fred break into coaching, preferably by taking the newly created position of Practice Squad development. Working Exclusively with those player to try and being their skills up to a level where they're serious candidates for a full roster spot, seriously can you imagine a better man for the job?
