  1. All of the sensationalism and Bill’s fever after the first three weeks was fun, but when you look at it, I believe more of it was fueled by how we got to a 3-0 start, (exciting come from behind wins against two teams), and not the fact we were 3-0. If you go back to the midpoint of last year, the Bills could have won how many games against good playoff teams – (see loses to KC, Baltimore, New England and Pittsburgh). So we start out this year winning 2 similar type games we had lost last year and all of the sudden the national spotlight is on Buffalo that we somehow figured it out. Well guess what, we just got a couple of bounces that we did not get in those loses and ended up with the “W’s”. In yesterday’s game – we did not get the bounces and lost.

I am not a “doomsayer” but really believe, come Devils Night (aka Oct 30th), this team will be sub .500 and exactly what we thought in August – headed in the right direction, but simply missing a few key ingredients to be something special over the long haul. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see the football God’s have more bounce in the Bills favor than not, but when you go into battle with talent that arguably would not start for many other NFL teams, you some up short time and again. Average or sub – McKelvin, Spiller, all receivers not named Stevie, Kelsey, Chambers, Merriman, they’ve gotten national recognition, but on the coattails of good fortune and not being special). The nice development on the offseason, the realization that Fitzpatrick belongs, Darius will be a great Pro, and the O-Line is much improved. Now don’t go crying out that I left Freddie off – if you were a Bills fan, you knew going in that he belongs n the NFL.

Understand, this is not a response to the Bills lose yesterday, in fact, it would read the same had they won – Yin and Yang are just evening out from last year…

The fact of the matter is that you wouldn't have posted this if we were 4-0 right now. "it would read the same had they won". You're off your ass, and this is a direct response to yesterday's loss. It's just MORE MORE MORE MORE fickle Bills fans, it's like a pandemic around here. It really is stunning.

  2. I feel like we as Bills fans have a really short memory sometimes. Not, say, big games that hurt really bad and which our playoff hopes hinge upon. I'm talking about random games for the past 11 years, games which for one reason or another: fumbles, penalties, a random bounce/opposing interception/opposing amazing catch-kick, beat us in a game we had locked up. I wish there was a place I could go to watch us get screwed in the final 5 minutes of a game, because I think it has happened A LOT in the past 11 years, like more than everyone actually considers/knows/cares to dwell on. In fact, writing this post has made me want to go back in the records and just dissect the past 11 years...

  3. Well it's no coincidence that the Pats have been destroying everyone thusfar.

However, the Lions went 4-0 in pre-season in the year that they didn't win a game. There definitely is a correlation, but I'm also willing to bet that there are plenty of outliers. Let's hope that the Bills are outliers.

Green Bay went 2-2 last preseason. All close games, except the one where they hung 59pts on the Colts in the 3rd game.

Jets went 2-2. Not many high scoring affairs.

Pittsburgh went 3-1 and Denver beat them handily.

    Chicago went 0-4.

Those were the final four, so is there really any correlation at all?

  4.

So my question to you is it better to love the Bills with all it's warts than to never had the Bills at all?

    PTR

I mean, based on Buffalo's economic condition right now, we're fairly spoiled with an NFL team. There are other US cities that could probably financially support an NFL team better than us. Fans become so wrapped up in their teams that they forget this is a business, a multi-billion dollar one at that. And for a city that has a 9%+ unemployment rate, shouting about not signing an OL/TE to a multi-million, multi-year deal, doesn't make sense. Take what you can get, while you can get it, because no one is dumping money into this team anymore, it's just not happening. A Terry Pegula isn't stepping up to buy the Bills and Jim Kelly doesn't have a cache of rich friends waiting in the wings to scoop up the Bills. Face some reality, we can barely get a Peace Bridge rebuilt, they're not going to approve a new stadium. The writing is on the wall, whether is next year, five years or ten years away...it's going to happen. They're going to leave...and that sucks horribly.

  5. No it wasn't but he was coached by a real coach so that is half the battle.

Do you think Maybin might have wanted out of Buffalo so he played like that or was is just the bad coaches? Marion Barber is pretty tough but he has a girl name so I doubt he can handle Maybin and wasn't it a bad field in Chicago too?

He hasn't been on the Jets for a real game yet but soon enough he will be. He will still have a real coach then too and so prepare for more of the same.

    P.S. J-E-T-S Jets JEts JETS.

Jimmy does it bother you that the Jets' D picked off Big Ben twice and held him to 133yds and 0 TDs...and you still lost? You'll always be the Giants' little brother.

  6. So our seemingly strong D lets up 20+ points 13 times this season? I'm not a homer, but that doesn't make any sense. And what about that last Miami game? Just 13-7...no explanation? We just lose in December at home 13-7, but we somehow beat Miami in November?

Pats backups mop up Bills season

  7. I like your optimism but they won 10 games last year and beat us on top of that. Add in that this is their home opener and we will have to deal with the Arrowhead crowd and I just don't see us as a favorite in this game. I wouldn't be surprised if we won, not at all but I would consider it a mild upset. It sure would be nice though.

They beat us by 3 in KC. I think that it's a PUSH in terms of odds of winning.

  8. I know you don't want to hear the about the OL, but becasue of it I can't see the Bills beating anyone on that list but the Bengals. Raiders front 7 will destroy the Bills.

While I agree that the Raiders have a fairly stacked front 7, they have a meek offense, including a concussed Campbell and Trent Edwards as a back-up. They've scored 5 FGs and 1TD (thrown by Edwards), they're not exactly lighting up the board. I know that Buffalo's offense is stagnant, but they is great opportunity for our D to give the O good field position and maybe a few turnover points. Calling the OAK game an automatic loss is crazy.

  9. I'm sick of talking about the OL and the QB and Ralph and FAs. Let's talk about the quickly approaching season:

    September 11: Bills at Chiefs (10-6), 1pm

    September 18: Raiders(8-8) at Bills, 1pm

    September 25: Patriots(14-2) at Bills, 1pm

    October 2: Bills at Bengals(4-12), 1pm

I'm not too keen on starting the season at Arrowhead, but the Raiders/Bengals are beatable, and having NE early in Buffalo is our best chance(We haven't played NE in Buffalo to start the season series since 2004, every time we do play them in Buffalo, the season is already out of hand).

  10. I think you're right on. It seems that the team is falling apart and no one in the administration is stepping forward to even confront what is happening. I would honestly like to know what Ralph does everyday. He is 92, and running an NFL football team. I imagine him waking up every morning and his handlers having to remind him he owns a team. The Bills are in death throes right now, and it's obvious that no one cares. Ralph can die any day and he's running the team that way. Everyone on these boards is arguing about the state of the team as if a logical, sound person is running the show, that's not the case, so don't expect logical moves to be made.

After scanning the topics on this board it was really dawned on me how bad things look for the Bills right now. While the team is making some strides in some areas there really has been very little done in the past year to improve this team.

    Some of the negative stuff:

    1. Ownership issues - more than any other time there seems to be a lack of a winning comittment. They will make tons of money no matter what.

    2. No known succession plan for the inevitable passing of Ralph.

    3. Lack of respect from the national media has reached an all time high. Maybe today's journalists have more insight or is it our culture now?

    4. Just when we think we have a football man running the show a story leaks that maybe that is not so. (Overdorf and the Evans trade)

    5. Front office taking a slow deliberate approach to rebuild, almost a reluctance to bring in better players and depth.

    6. Not since the early 70's (prior to Lou Saban's return) have we had so little talent on the roster. At least relative to the rest of the league and especially our division.

Are things that bad for the Bills or could it be the mass communications blasting away at us? Think about how things are today - sports radio, all sports TV, internet, blogs, tweets, youtube.

Seems like the focus is on the negative. I even find it to be happening to me.

  11. I just re-thought about that this morning, and it hurt all over again. I remember actually thinking how do I even go about ORDERING playoff tickets? I have never done that. Do they make them available when we clinch or do they just assume we're in and they pre-release them mid-season? Is it after we beat Arizona next week, or do we have to go through the FORMALITY of beating the chargers, dolphins and jets?

  12. Because the average poster has no idea what they're looking at, doesn't understand what "base" means and wants to participate in the "OMG WE SUCK" screaming contest.

Preseason games are for evaluating personnel. We have absolutely no idea what the coaches objectives are going into the game yet the fan base freaks when they don't see us absolutely dominating. I'm sure we could go out and waste time installing a full blown game plan but it's a pointless exercise.

Gailey & Wanny wanted to see if they could get pressure on the QB with just 3 lineman. If they can, it completely changes what they can do in the regular season. That process is called a self assessment. He also wanted to see if our five lineman were able to block in a base package without a lot of additional schemes.

Can we all just please relax and let the coaches do their job. If we don't win 8 games this season then you'll have something to B word about.

I, as an average fan, know that an inaccurate QB is an inaccurate QB. Simple sets or not, regardless of the coaches agendas, Fitz couldn't hit the far side of the barn. So here's the OMG WE SUCK screaming contest, FITZ LOOKED HORRIBLE. But it's okay, it's only the 2nd preseason game, and we only used base packages, that called for the QB to misthrow, so we could see how athletic our WRs are.

  13. I don't know if this was already touched upon, but since it was posted last night at 1am, I think I'm safe:

Bills LB Nick Barnett knows their performance against the Denver Broncos may not have been anything to shout about on Saturday night, but he’s promising bigger and better things for the regular season and is telling Bills fans not to panic.

“We should be able to run our base defense and stop them, then again, we did not game plan them at all,” said Barnett. ”I probably watched one quarter on them, and that was today. It’s the preseason, you’re supposed to be able to go out there and play your base defense and make the plays. We came up a little bit short, but there were some good things that we can take from this game and build upon. I wouldn’t throw away your season tickets; it’s going to be a great season, don’t worry.”

    Watched. One. Quarter.

  14. I know this has been discussed in various threads, but more so as a rebutal to the chicken littles, but I watched the first half in which the starters played and had this to say:

There were a few positives. The run D looked pretty good. The lineman were able to plug the lanes. When the run did get through to the next level it ususally was for about 3 yards and the LBs stopped it.

At times the O-line was able to open some lanes for Spiller and Fred. Fred ran with some intensity, especially on that 20 yard scamper after Jones was leveled. Chandler did ok at times blocking. Pass protection had its moments and Fitz had some time to throw.

I thought special teams looked better than last week. The fake punt was nice to see. With Smith, I expect to see more gadget plays during the regular season.

As for the negatives. The thing I noticed most that's probably causing so much grief with the O-line is inconsistency. Gailey had Rinehart, Levitre moving around. Granted I know he's trying to see what combination works best, but I'm hoping this week he's seen enough to know who the starters will be in what combination and leave it alone, and let them build cohesiveness. With that said, you should see the pass protection and run blocking improve.

As for the run game, I don't see Spiller as the starter. He still stutters and has no patience at times. Gailey shouldn't even entertain this idea. Let's call this game an experiment to see where Spiller was.

Chandler needs to learn how to adjust and pick up the blitz. Twice he let a defender run in untouched as his ran downfield. Clearly he should have been held in to help Bell. Bell was overwhelmed at times. The right side was guilty as well.

Fitz' timing was off. He had passes that would normally have been on the money on the crossing routes, but they were either low or behind the WR, or they were high.

The defense was burned constantly by the screens. Usually it's self critiquing and they adjust, but not tonight. McKelvin was out of position at times.

I thought some of the officiating was bad; Broncos offensive holding mostly.

All in all, for a second preaseason game we should have seen some improvements, and there were some. Whether it is the lack of game planning, Gailey still finding the right fit along the O-line, the poor training camp this past week and it carried over, or just wanting to get out alive with few injuries, I think we still need to be optimistic and give them a chance. Sure, you have some teams that are tearing it up and some that are just hanging in there that you wouldn't expect, but this is the preseason. Flame away, but it's all base plays and Gailey along with the coaches need to see what they have in the players. Again, no OTAs, no mini-camps. You can't expect them to be in mid-season form after just 3 weeks of camp while trying to fit several OTAs and mini-camps into 1 1/2 months, still audition players, and introduce new plays. That's just too much to ask.

Rest assure that Gailey isn't happy. Who in their right mind is going to do a Jim Mora impersonation and publicly air out the dirty laundry. He and Nix know there are weaknesses. I wouldn't be surprised if after the roster cuts begin, they bring in a few tackles and guards to try out. C'mon folks, stay positive. We've been here in this position for 11 years now and yeah it sucks at times, but we all knew that any improvement wasn't going to happen over night. Go BILLS!!!!!

These are great observations. But every single team has had an abbreviated off-season, so that can't be the reason we're having a poor pre-season. After watching these last two games, I feel like we absolutely have the weapons to have a great season, but the execution is horrendous. I really can't get a feel for the play calling just yet, because it's preseason, but we need to be far more aggressive on offense, and start utilizing our play makers. I just don't think we can rely on our D to be on the field all game and bail out the sputtering offense. But, as you say, we'll see in the coming games.

  15. I got the Sunday Ticket To Go service last year. They didn’t require any explanation from me. I don’t have the DirecTV satellite service. I just did the mobile streaming internet thing. They didn’t hassle me about it.

I don’t think I’m gonna do it again this year though. I’ve been considering it, but I don’t want to spend $350 on streaming video that doesn’t look that great, has occasional hiccups and that I can’t pause or record.

Hmm, that's good to know. I wonder why they're giving so much push back this year? I had to talk with three separate people. I mean if you say it was horrible last year, I imagine that a good amount of people complained--hopefully they did something about it. And since it's my only option, I'll be posting on whether it looks any better.
