Bills acquire WR Mike Williams from Buccaneers for sixth-round pick

One man's trash is another man's sixth-round pick, apparently. Mike Williams has scored a combined 20 touchdowns in 2010 and 2012, but he's endured some down years in 2011 and 2013 because of his lethargy. Williams is one of the laziest players in the NFL, but there's a chance this will serve as a wake-up call for him. Getting out of the crazy Tampa party environment can't hurt either.

This isn't a bad deal for the Bills on the surface, as they probably weren't going to obtain anyone better for their sixth-round choice. Williams can step in and serve as the No. 2 receiver if he puts forth full effort. However, this trade could fail quite easily, which would hurt because Buffalo inherited Williams' awful contract. That's why Buffalo deserves a poor grade for this swap. The team is unlikely to get the production out of Williams that matches the price (or the cap hit).

As for the Buccaneers, it's great that they're getting something for Williams without having to take on his cap hit. They made a huge mistake in re-signing him, but they were able to get out of it by finding a team willing to take on his contract. There's a sucker born every day, apparently.

  2. I'm surprised Schwartz came to the Bills. I expected him to go to the Rams and reunite with Jeff Fischer. The fact he came to Buffalo, given his 20 years of experience in the NFL, speaks volumes about the Bills. I'm certain he has a lot of close connections after this many years of NFL service and just a week ago was in fact a head coach. I'm on board with this hire.

Now we need a wide receiver coach and hope it's also a strong pick like this.

  3. Pettine's departure would set back Bills

The pickings are slim for the Cleveland Browns. Since firing Rob Chudzinski, the Browns have run through several head coaching candidates and have yet to make a hire.

Their next interview will be with Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, and given the way Cleveland's coaching search has unfolded, it would hardly be a shock if Pettine soon becomes the favorite for the position.

That makes Pettine's possible departure from Buffalo a hypothetical worth exploring. What would it mean to the Bills?

  4. My guess is that he was not a "Pettine guy".

This is normal IMO for a first year coaching staff - you bring a bunch of alpha male coaches together for the first time some of them get along and others not so much.

Driesbach and Pettine both coached at CB West high school in Doylestown, PA and both are graduates of the same high school and coached together previously. Seems very strange, maybe Marrone is forcing this and cutting ties with Pettine's ILB coach that he recommended, I'm sure. Then again maybe Pettine didn't think Chuck was up to the task...Hmmmm interesting...
