  1. Willie Nelson once sang this famous line: "Turn out the lights the party's over, they say that all good things must end".

I am fully prepared for no NFL this season. Truthfully, maybe the NFL needs to fail. If there is no season, I look forward to the gimmicks the owners will pull in the 2012 season to get us back to the stadiums (free jerseys for the first 1,000 people at the stadium, $10 seat days, all those 65 and over get in free, free autograph sessions with all players (past and present) immediately following the game (on the field), dollar hot dog day, winning text gets free pro-bowl tickets, dollar beer day, buy one ticket get one free day, all school age children get in free day, etc...).

Did I leave any gimmicks out? Oh yeah, maybe they'll allow NFL players to use steroids like the MLB did in the 1990's, to get butts in seats.

dream on brother nothing you said will come to fruition. they hold all the cards and as soon as here is football again the fans will come right back.

  2. I would say that while I'm pulling for Dwan Edwards, I probably would rather see Carrington win the job by season's end I think the Bills would feel the same way. Also, there was the suggestion that Troup could play end in some situations and this is of course not without precedence. Both BJ Raji and Haloti Ngata played 3-4 end more than nose tackle early in their careers. You could have two huge DEs in Dareus and Troup bookending Kyle Willians. That would be an atypical approach… but maybe a very effective one.

I do think we'll see a lot of situation substitution as the staff works to get all the players involved and finding out what each player does best. And I'm talking about guys like Kelsay, Batten, maybe Andra Davis in goal line situations, obviously Wilson and Scott would get a lot of snaps… and you'd hope that Searcy or Chris White might contribute.

As far as the back end, I'm still hopeful that Florence re-signs. I think everyone would like to see McKelvin become the player that he has the physical gifts to become. I agree with the earlier suggestion that McGee play in extra situations even if he's not necessarily covering the slot receiver. He would be a nice piece on passing downs. Byrd became a better run defender but almost a non-factor in coverage in his second year. Hopefully he improves.

I'm pretty excited about this defense.

they did not sign edwards to sit him on rush situations i see carrington rushing from one of the OLB positions.

i love our DE situation now with edwards, darius and carrington and i also love our interior of troup/willams and darius.

  3. I have a friend who's a retired Colonel and now does secret stuff for the govt. keeping the world safe for democracy. Since he's too busy to read the sports much, I emailed him a Bills update that I thought I'd share with you guys even though there are no great insights for those here:

Buddy Nix was brought in to be the Bills GM last year and this year he finally revamped the personnel department. Amongst many changes, Tom Modrak was fired. Modrak was brought in by Tom Donahue 10 years ago to head up college scouting. Donahue didn't last long, but Modrak survived - until now - despite a dismal record of failure:

    Bill Polian/John Butler Golden Age

1983… Jim Kelly (Hall of Famer)

1984… Greg Bell (had Pro Bowl season with the Bills)

1985… Bruce Smith (Hall of Famer)

1986… Ronnie Harmon (had moderately productive 12 year career)

    1987… Shane Conlan (Pro Bowler)

1988… Thurman Thomas (no 1st round pick; Thomas taken in 2nd round; Hall of Famer)

1989… Don Beebe (no 1st round pick; taken in 3rd round; productive starter)

    1990… James Williams (productive starter)

    1991… Henry Jones (Pro Bowler)

1992… John Fina (productive 11 year NFL career)

1993… Thomas Smith (productive 9 year NFL career)

1994… Jeff Burris (productive 10 year NFL career)

1995… Ruben Brown (8 consecutive Pro Bowls as a Bill)

1996… Eric Moulds (3 Pro Bowls as a Bill; one of the most talented receivers in Bills history)

1997… Antowain Smith (good but unspectacular NFL career)

1998… Sam Cowart (went to Pro Bowl as a Bill but then cut after an injury)

    1999… Antoine Winfield (Pro Bowler)

Tom Donahue/Tom Modrak Era of Misery

2001… Nate Clements (made one Pro Bowl as a Bill)

2002… Mike Williams (4th overall pick; monumental bust)

2003… Willis McGahee (decent starter; attitude and other issues; now a second-teamer with the Ravens)

2004… J.P. Losman (bust; not currently on a NFL roster)

2005… Roscoe Parish (no 1st round pick; taken in 2nd round; not a starter)

2006… John McCargo (huge bust; never earned a starting position)

2007… Marshawn Lynch (fair starter; off field problems; now a second-stringer with Seattle)

2008… Leodis McKelvin (has yet to earn a starting position)

2009… Aaron Maybin (huge bust; drafted as a sack specialist; has yet to record a NFL sack in 2 seasons; not even on the active roster many Sundays)

2010… C.J. Spiller (has yet to earn a starting position; this may be more a Buddy Nix pick)

More than half of the Polian/Butler first picks became Pro Bowlers. Three have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Nearly all became solid starters.

Virtually none of the Donahue/Modrak 1st picks became Pro Bowlers. About half never even earned starting positions on crappy Bills squads. Three high 1st round picks were busts.

The NFL players just voted the Top 100 players currently in the NFL. Not a single Bill made the Top 100.

This year's draft got mixed grades from pundits. Some say it was great, maybe the best in the NFL. The Bills picked a lot of defensive players from big schools who have a high probability of success in the NFL. Some draft gurus gave the Bills only a fair or poor grade mostly because they didn't take a QB.

QB is a funny position in the draft. About half of 1st round QBs are busts. Any other position is safer. 1st round linemen, for example, have a fairly high degree of NFL success. So do you waste an early pick on a QB when the probabilities are bad? On the other hand, most great teams have franchise QBs who they found in the draft (e.g. Brady, Manning, Rodgers).

While Fitz wasn't a star last year, he was serviceable. Personally, I'm glad the Bills resisted the temptation to take a QB. There were bigger needs while none of the QBs in the draft were can't-miss types...

mixed reviews? i would say 90% of the experts loved our draft i dont know where you got your info?

  4. He works for the owners.

I have no sympathy for either side. If they can't decide how to split up 9 BILLION DOLLARS then f*ck 'em. I'll do something else on Sundays in the fall.

look I'm all for the owners on this one. you show me one industry where its employees get 55% of the gross revenues in salary and compensation.

get serious fellas these players spend more on earnings than a normal guy makes in 10 years.

the owners assumed all the risk years ago just because the game is so successful now does not mean that the players should somehow be co owners of the league.

think of it over 50% of gross revenues go to the players are you freaking kidding me.

everyone laughed and ridiculed Ralph Wilson when he vehemently voted no on this ridiculous contract and told his fellow owners they were giving away the house. he was laughed @ and called a senile old man both in buffalo and by all the national media.

well the old man was right and now the piss pot major market owners realize that wilson was exactly right so they are now f--ked.

they still make money but anyone who sides with the players on this matter need their heads examined.

the day these idiot players hired Smith as their leader was the day that football died for the fans. the guy is a total piece of crap and is nothing but a low life consummate freaking lawyer trying to line his pockets.

upshaw would never ever have gone the court route but from the get go Smith was going one way and that was litigation. know why because it makes him a rich piece of crap.

he never had any intention of reaching an agreement thru collective bargaining and anyone who thinks he did are brain dead.

mark my words now fellas Smith will take us all down.

  5. Yep, they need to get things resolved fast because at the rate things are going, most of the players are going to be in jail for one reason or another. The players need to be on the field practicing, not getting busted for DUI, possession, mistaken identity (see Hines Ward), etc.

A question for the audience here, but what in the hell is Goodell's job anyway? He's the commissioner!!! Shouldn't he be more than a bystander during all this? All I can say is crap rolls down hill and Karma is hell. Let's see: No football equals no NFL ticket subscriptions, no ticket sales, no jersey sales, no concession stand sales, just as a start. Money that ordinary people that work the concession stands, pro shops counted on for extra income goes away.

I'm really perplexed that these two sides can't reach an agreement!!! When the economy is the way it is, prices going up, employees having to take furlough days, it's just sickening the way both sides are acting. Well come this fall when the players who only get league minimum salary are behind in their mortgages, car payments, and credit card for jewelry stores, they can thank the Jerry Jones, Bob Krafts, Tom Bradys, and Drew Brees. Just like when the baseball strike happened, how many fans walked out on the sport? It'll be interesting to see how many fans support the NFL after this.

this whole process went down the drain when upshaw died and the stupid players hired a lawyer in smith who has no idea of what the NFL is all about.

this idiot convinced the the players that the answer to their problems was to not negotiate and let the courts settle what should be settled thru collective bargaining. on the day they decertified with the owners putting a much better offer on the table and them never even countering and decertifing says it all.

we have no one to blame here but the payers and i hope they get it shoved up their collective stupid butts.

  6. every year we seem to miss keeping better players, be it Winfield, Clements, Peters, Jennings, McGahee, Schobel etc and on and on. Somewhere along this line we had better expect to not only draft good players, but have a strategy for keeping them. It isn't good enough that at the end we think they "don't want to" stay with the Bills. This is a real problem.

really? jennings, mcgahee and by the way schobel retired. jennings like in bflo was injured most of the time.mcgahee was a total character disaster.

peters was not worth the money and the fans in philly are not as enthused with him today as they were when they got him. go on their boards the think he is a lazy.

    winfield was a loss.

clements was was not worth the money and if i'm not mistaken never made the pro bowl with the niners and will probably be cut this year if he does not take a major pay cut.

i could not disagree with your post more.

the only player we should have kept was winfield.

  7. I read that the Bills did an ok job picking drafts. Not like my Jets but ok. It would be nice if you guys could finish 2nd behind us so we can have easy playoffs and be rested for the Super bowl.

Can you even believe the killers the Jets got in the draft? The coach has guaranteed a Super Bowl victory. I am looking forward to the Jets bashing some heads in. I can't believe these other teams was so stupid and left these guys for the Jets.

    Muhammad Wilkerson

    Kenrick Ellis

    Bilal Powell

    Jeremy Kerley

    Greg McElroy

    Scotty McKnight

Welcome to the big time boys. What's your ring sizes?

And don't nobody say nothing about Rex being a blowhard and stupid. If you read the article it also says he wrote a book. I doubt your southern coach can even read a book so forget about writing one.

I am mostly writing to say you guys did a good job on drafting for a second rate team.

your more ignorant than your blowhard coach believing that "HE" actually wrote the book.

you guys like your ignorant coach all talk the big talk but never back it up,where is your ring?

looking forward to seeing fans like you and your idiot coach eating crow again this season.

your all talk so talk to us after you actually have a ring.

  8. I apologize if something like this has been posted but with rounds one through seven all done, how do you feel overall about our draft?

I am happy. Maybe a OL in round 3 but I cant complain

many experts i read said our day 3 picks turned a good draft into a great draft. i think like a lot of the pundits including gill brandt think we had a great draft.

just because we never heard of our day 3 picks the experts did and all said we got great value with our day 3 picks.

they loved our first 3 picks then our day 3 picks represented great value and had much higher grades than where we picked them.

  9. He'll easily find a job elsewhere.

not for the money he wants. he wants top 5 safety money no freaking way. the bills made him a very fair offer in the 5 million plus range and he was insulted. get real.

it has nothing to do with finding a job he wants to be paid like the guy in pittsburg or ed reed and its never going to happen.

he should watch what he says he may not want to burn his bridges to soon.

  10. They drafted the right position in Rd 3, but they took the wrong guy. How is taking a guy in rd 3 who would have been there in rd 4 a great move?

and you know this how kreskin?

you believe this because someone on espn gave their opinion that they thought he would make it to the fourth.

every time you post all you do is make yourself look more foolish. how anyone can say where a player would go is ridiculous.

i'm sure you knew that locker or would go before gabbert, and ponder and locker would go 30 spots higher then they were projected to go by the media experts, give me a break!

  11. We were on the A path until we whiffed on their little pet Shrpperd, who's 4.8 40 would have meant he was there in Rd 4.

    Best draft goes to Saints

another message board GM who has no opinion of his own or never heard of the player and thinks he knows more about a player who nix scouted and who gailey coached in the senior bowl but what do they know.

good job all you did was repeat what you heard on espn when they said they thought he might have gone in the fourth, nice job.

the facts are he was the second rated ILB in the draft.

  12. Pre draft.. Nix" we need another offensive tackle."

    During presser on Kelvin S...Chan...

" Our interior guards, tackles and center spots are pretty solid,we're not focusing there.

they will get a TE and OT today most likely both in the fourth round. the drafts not over pal.

after the carimi went #31 there was a big drop off!

nix is doing just fine so far so have no fear!

  13. I was one of them not because I thought it wasn't a need, I saw LB and TE (was hoping that we had a QB in mind) as a bigger need and that we basically had our pick of the litter at #34. The pick of Sheppard at 68 made this choice a lot better. After reading about this kid, Williams was agreat pick. The draft is going well so far!!

I almost feel like this is Nix and Gailey's first draft and that last year was just kind of a wash. Most opf those picks were being brought along very slowly and didn't do much until the end of the year. I am hoping to see a big improvement this upcoming season.

I am not a Fitz hater or a Fitz lover, but getting a franchise QB is something we need to take care of next draft... At pick #3 or #34 I thought we might do something, but Nix and company didn't feel there was one available, which is fine I don't want us to reach and end up where we have been since JK retired.

    not a need LOL!

first off we play in the pass happy afc east and you can never have enough corners and this draft after the second round is very weak @ CB as nix said.

you so realize that youboty is gone most likely whitner and maybe florance so how can there be no need, you dont make any sense!

  14. Mallet in round three makes sense to me. This guy is a good QB and played in the toughest conference in College football and put up some good numbers. His attitude is somewhat of a problem, but that could also be a good thing. And he did have by far the best arm in this draft for the Buffalo winds. Just think if he sits under Fitz for a year or 2 while he learns the game. I think we would have a winner..... By the way I am ok the with Williams pick in round 2. I live in Big 12 country, and that guy is a heck of a player. I give us an A+ so far.

listening to callers talk on wgr some guys dont even like darius. seriously?

this guy was rated the best player in the draft by many scouts and is an absolute beast i cant listen to ignorant fans anymore.

it was a gift from God that he fell to us like nix said they did not expect him to be there because they were convinced denver would take him @ 2 if carolina didnt take him @ 1.

as nix said denver 2 days before the draft for some reason fell in love with miller and the football Gods smiled on the bills.

how anyone could knock a guy who can play any position on the defensive line and play in any defense is beyond my comprehension. IMO Nix has now changed our defensive line from a major weakness to a position of strength and its young.

  15. Update: ESPN retracts their report. The NFL lockout has not been reinstated.

old news brother. the stay has been upheld and is back in effect. now the parties will plead their case before the appeals court.

espn just jumped the gun by a few hours but you are incorrect and reporting old news,a temporary stay HAS been granted for discovery.

  16. Take the best LB available and by all means avoid the temptation to take a QB!

i totally agree but after listening to phill simms the last 2 weeks tell the whole world that,"if mallett is not a top 10 pick" then i'll quit this business.

he said he has followed him since high school and in high school he said that he knew that kid is going to be a NFL QB.

he also said he is the most NFL ready QB in the draft and everything except his speed is off the charts. he absolutly loves the kid.

so i dont know maybe buddy is pulling a fast one here i just have this feeling they are going to take Mallett if he is there.

if no QB then i say they take either brook reed or sherard the OLB from Pitt.

  17. Without a CBA players aren't allowed to sign agents. That being said I do think that Mallett will not be the Bills pick at #34.

I can't recall the Poz/Lynch story. Can you refresh my memory?

how can a team tell a player not in their league and with no CBA in place that they cant hire an agent,i dont know about that one.

if thats true its only more amo in the players fight with the NFL in regards to the anti trus aspect of the case. can you produce some proof of that statement concerning hiring agents because it makes no sense.

  18. If the Bills are sticking with the 3-4 Id really like to see Williams play DE opposite Dareus with Troupe at NT

Williams and Dareus could move inside on obvious passing situations

you cannot be serious. you make no sense. nix and gailey said flat out williams could play DE if they needed him to.

now we have 3 very good DE's and why you would even entertain playing a great inside player out of position when there is absolutly no reason to is beyond me.

we just spent a lot of money on edwards and covington and darius make the position now a position of strength.

inside we have an all pro and by all reports troup is on a conditioning mission,(i guess nix was right about the kids character and desire when everyone wanted fatso) and is a chiseled 237 the last time we heard so we will be much stronger up the middle.

your post makes no sense at all.all of a sudden our D/Line looks pretty damn good and young.

  19. Please don't be a bust Marcell!

butst, get freaking real this guy on 90% of everyone's board was the best player in the draft @ any position. it was between him and miller and i still say mill is to small but a great palyer.

this kid can play any position on the D/line and alabama played 3/4 a lot and he played the 5 technique . he can play nose,3 tech and 5 teck ita p ick from heaven.

we finally got it right Nix is the freaking man. we finally got a break because this guy before the draft everyone on this board thought there was no way we get him @ 3. thank god denver fell in love with miller.

  20. http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/NFP-Sunday-Blitz-4430.html

*It’s now starting to look like the second tier of quarterbacks – Jake Locker, Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton and maybe Ryan Mallett – could start flying off the board as early as the tenth pick, with the Redskins (they allegedly have a thing for Locker), Dolphins and Jaguars being candidates to start the ball rolling. As the draft has drawn nearer, these players have become hotter and hotter. A number of teams already having investigated moving up from high in the second round into the first to land a quarterback. Among those teams that have made calls are the Jaguar, Titans, Bills and Vikings.

Frankly, this terrifies me. It would be just like the Bills to blow their prime second round pick (and another pick or two) to climb back into Rd 1 to take Ponder or one of the other second-tier developmental QBs. Why do this? The team has so many needs, and if they don't pull the trigger on Gabbert or Newton, it would be ridiculous to start dealing away picks to land someone who won't start for several years, if ever. I'm really becoming concerned that the Bills are going to come out of Rounds 1 and 2 with Von Miller and Christian Ponder and fewer draft picks than they started with. Not good.

Also: here is an article suggesting that Ponder doesn't project too well:

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2011/introducing-lewin-career-forecast-v20

i think they may surprise us with who they take if they do trade back into the first for a QB.

if newton is there by some miracle just pencil in his name now you can take that one to the bank because @ the suite holders meeting whaley was off to the side with john murphy. he did not see me behind him @ the bar and i could hear their conversation.

whaley was talking about newton and his eyes lit up like candles and he flat out said is he is there he's their pick. he said you just cant bypass a franchise QB. laugh all you want but i heard it with my own ears so i could care less if anyone believes me but i know what i heard.

now on sirius the GM for the panthers just said they are open to trading their #1 pick, this could get very interesting.

  21. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/667927-2011-nfl-draft-buffalo-bills-wont-select-cam-newton-because-he-is-black

    Enjoy.

    My favourite bit is this

Buffalo has passed on many different black quarterbacks over the years including Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, David Garrard, Tavaris Jackson, Josh Johnson just to name a few and if this crazy notion is true then the Buffalo Bills will also pass on QB, Cam Newton.

They also passed on Tom Brady, Brett Favre and Drew Brees.

your out of your mind should he somehow miraculously be available @3 the card with his name on it will be up there in 3 seconds.

  22. While I agree with the OP in that I don't think Merriman will play much if at all this season, I agree with you as well. I am happy we re- signed him. We didn't pay him a lot (around 2.2 per I think, I may be wrong), and IF he does turn out to be healthy, he is well worth the money. It's a boom or bust situation IMO, and the fact that we didn't waste a pick, only money, makes it well worth it for this team. I'm rooting for him bigtime, but I think his career may be over. I hope he proves me wrong and we get to see his sack dance on many occasions this year and in the future.

why people think he cannot be healthy is beyond me. now all the geniuses on this board know more than our team doctors who actually examined him and gave buddy the ok on his injury front but what do they know compared to all the message board GM's on this stupid board who never even saw the guy.

i just dont get it. please explain why he cant be healthy. could it not be that his injury was reaggravated last year in SD maybe because he tried to come back to soon.

my God give the guy a break and the bills medical staff also.

i hope like hell the guy is healthy so all you know it all pessimists all look like fools.
