  1. I saw that effort....should of got more than a 4th rounder

Effort doesn't give you more than a 4th rounder. We only got a 4th rounder because Lynch has never averaged more than 4.1 a carry in a season. Oh, and since being traded he only averages 3.5 a carry, which is awful. He has been consistently below average, and if he were on the trade block today I don't know if anyone would even give up a 4th. It was one run, albeit absolutely amazing, but it doesn't change the fact that he's been a consistently below average running back every single year of his career, and the Bills made out on that trade.

  2. Great WRs don't do much good as such--see: Andre and Calvin Johnson, Lloyd, any Moss, TO/OC, Fitzgerald, etc. And the best CB in the world won't have much of a direct impact on the score of the game--he can cover one man at a time. A very good or great QB can complete passes to many players in a single game--see: Brady, Brees

I would rather have "great" players at more important positions. You should want that too.

What are the "more important" positions? You could make a list of great players at every position that are on bad teams, with the exception of QB. Your examples don't provide anything meaningful.

  3. I don't buy that logic. There is simply no way that Nix was looking at Spiller up to and on draft day with the plan to draft him for "next year's offense". How does that make sense? What is "next year's offense"? What's going to be the big change? Is it a secret--so secret that the league can't get but the tiniest peak at Spiller's electricity?

Many teams are running a two back ground game--except the Bills, despite drafting the "best player available" in the top 10 of the first round of the draft.

This sounds like a weak rationalization as to why Gailey simply cannot find any place for this kid in the offense. Nobody drafts a RB in the first round---for use at a later date.

I think on draft day Nix was thinking Spiller would be a future impact player even if it didn't happen right away. At this time last year, the Bills' roster was so far away from being playoff caliber it made a lot more sense to try and nab a future game changer rather than drafting for need. When you are close to making the playoffs, draft for need. When you are where the Bills were last year, you do what Nix did and draft guys who will be difference makers down the line - then build around them. It might not worked out as planned, but drafting best player available makes sense for a team not on the cusp of contention.

  4. If you win too many NFC games that means you have lost more AFC games which messes up your tiebreaker.

Assuming you are being serious, the flaw in that logic is that you are presuming teams can control which games they can win and lose. Obviously if a team was predestined to go 10 - 6, they would choose to go 0-4 in the NFC and 10-2 in the AFC and 6-0 in the division. But if a team really had that much control over which games they could win and lose, they would just choose to go 19-0.

For an AFC team, it's better to have a better record versus the AFC than NFC, quite obviously. But the thought that a team would lose on purpose to an NFC team to better their playoff chances is ludicrous.

Another flaw is that you are assuming that there is an inverse relationship between a team's NFC and AFC record, which is not true.

  5. A few years ago I mentioned that the Bills would be better off losing a game to the Cardinals to set themselves up better for the tie breaker. People on the board refused to understand my point even though it is relatively simple.

I can't find the link but some of you may remember it.

If you were around back then maybe you can answer this:

If the Chiefs and Chargers both win their remaining division games, the Chargers win their other game and the Chiefs lose their other game, which team will go to the playoffs? Why?

Is this a joke? Losing to an NFC team does nothing to help or hurt your tiebreaker (until you get down to SOS and what not) as it doesn't affect your conference or division record.

  6. What about the perfect strike he threw for about 20 yards in the endzone that his target dropped? I'm just saying, let's point out all of the plays if you are going to single out one "lucky" play.

He looked pretty decent for a rook on the road yesterday. He definitely wasn't scared, I can tell you that.

Being scared has nothing to do with it. You can't win games completing 8 passes, having a 50% completion percentage and not being able to convert third downs. I don't think he did anything yesterday to change anyone's mind about him, and he didn't do anything to show that he could become a legitimate starting QB, let alone a great one.

  7. So again, let me say that I have no problems with where these guys ended up playing. Like many of you said, they were free agents and have the right to go wherever they want.

The only thing that bothers me is how they appear to be stringing along the fans and teams to believe that they ever intended to sign with them.

If Lee's heart was always in Philly and that's where he wanted to be for his family and son, then great. Understood. Then why make the Rangers and Yankees think they have a chance? Why the multiple visits. Why make statements about "we" when talking about next year in Texas. Like LeBron, Dwayne, and Lee, don't mess with people. Say hey, I want to be a Philly. And then negotiate. And if they won't give you the money, which is not gonna happen with that level of production, then talk to other teams.

Again, I think I was pretty clear around what I was calling out. So for those with the envy comment or saying they can do whatever, please read the whole post before making a comment and making derogatory statements.

Who is to say he was stringing along the Yankees and the Rangers? Maybe he was seriously considering them. Plus they were the ones who decided to make the offers. And why isn't Cliff Lee allowed to use negotiating tricks? You don't think the teams do the same thing in other situations? Maybe he got some more dollars out of Philadelphia by doing so.

Either way, if you are going to pick on athletes this is probablys the worst case you could have chosen. The Yankees and Rangers came to Lee. He pursued all options, as anyone making such an important decision would. There was nothing unethical in this process.

  8. First, there's a difference between trading down and getting a guy like Spiller at 20-30 (range for guys like Felix Jones and Chris Johnson) and taking him at 9 overall.

Secondly, for every Darren McFadden, there's 25-30 guys who suck their rookie year because their skills don't translate to the pros, they're injury-prone, or they have personal issues that prevent them from being good pros.

Basically, if they suck their rookie year, there's a greater than 50% chance they're not going to work out. By year 3, it's about 100% chance.

So, yes, Run DMc shows that it's not a foregone conclusion, but it's more likely than not that Spiller is not going to be worth a 9th overall pick at the very least.

You make some very valid points. I think what a lot of people are missing, though, is Spiller really hasn't been that bad. His YPC is right around league average, and he has shown more of a propensity to run inside as the Browns game showed. I'm not saying he'll ever justify the 9th overall pick but to say he has sucked seems a little unreasonable to me.

  9. It all makes me care a little less about sports. The cold reality is: Only the top 5-7 markets have a chance to win championships in their respective sports on a regular basis...and maybe even at all any more.

When you see the Phillies have Lee, Halliday, Oswalt and Hamels, how do you think you think your Brewers stack up? It's becomming an uncompetitive joke. Look at the Red Sox and Yamkees and compare to the Royals. Joke.

It's no doubt much easier for the large markets to win, but if franchises are run correctly they can compete too. Just look at the Rays. Even the Royals have a really good farm system, but they keep wasting money on the Jose Guillen's (richest contract in Royals' history), Jeff Franceour's and Melky Cabrera's of the world - guys that don't help win baseball games. The disadvantage these teams have is when they make a mistake, it sets them back. Whereas if the Yankees make a mistake it doesn't matter. But if they make the right moves, any franchise can compete and the Rays are a testament to that.

Even the Red Sox spent money for a long time withouth any World Series' rings to show for it until they figured out they needed to make the right moves.

  10. Thank you for making this point. I keep hearing sports talk radio hosts saying how classy he is and what a great thing this is for baseball that he left $30-$40 million on the table to go play where he wanted to play and felt comfortable bringing his family, instead of just going for the money. BS. He'll be getting $24M per year in Philly. He would have gotten about $21M/year in New York and $23M/year in Texas. He went where the most money per year was, not the total value of the contract.

I really don't know if he strung along the Yankees or Rangers. He probably did and it was the smart thing to do - if he wanted the most money. It's not like he did this whirlwind tour like Lebron did. Pretty much every team in play came to his home in Arkansas to give their sales pitch. Lee probably wanted to keep it low-key, no matter how impossible that was going to be. Lebron just comes off as arrogant and showy because of his stupid 1-hour special to announce to the world where he was going to play.

Um he definitely took less money. In 5 years from now it's HIGHLY unlikely that any team is going to give a 37 YO pitcher anywhere near the annual salary that he'll need to make up for the money he left on the table. Factor in natural age related decline along with the high reality that he'll be injured at some point, and it would take a minor miracle for him to recover the money he left on the table.

It may be a moot point because he made a crapload of money, but to say he "didn't really take less money" is inaccurate. If it was all about the money for Lee, he would not be a Phillie right now.

  11. Maybe that is nice to hear but that sure as Hell was not fun to watch. I was counting down the minutes until I could get out of that rain. The Browns offense was more boring than Trent Edward's worst game. Fun to see? Uhhh, not so much....

I was at the game and had a blast. How could a Bills fan not have fun at a slugfest in which the Bills come out victorious?

  12. You can keep quoting the record all you want. Anyone who has watched this team over the last 4 years knows this team is in a much better position heading into next season than it ever was going into an offseason during the Jauron era. I, for one, am encouraged for their near futue prospects by the way they have been competing. For a rebuilding team, that's more important than raw win totals.

I do watch the games in a very sober state. That is why I am confident in my position. The Bills will be fortunate to win more than 3 games this year. You find that to be very encouraging to their near future prospects. It is obvious my standards and yours vary a great deal. Accepting mediocrity will only get you more mediocrity.

It certainly means that there aren't enough good players to be good.

  13. But apparently conversations are not fascinating enough to actually, you know, create an account and join in. I'll abstain from visiting your blog because you could only be bothered to create an account for the purposes of advertising. No offense.

None taken. I assumed some people would take this post that way, and I don't blame them. I do feel I have some interesting stuff to say, though, that some here will hopefully find worth reading, and I'm not trying to pass my blog off for something more than it's not like that guy who tried to spread his version of Tucker Max stories haha
