  1. Wasn't Jim Kelly a first rounder?

The QB position has the greatest potential to impact a franchise.

The Bills haven't drafted one with their first pick in any draft since 1960.

Scott hates that point because it discounts trades or QB's taken later in the first round than the teams ACTUAL first pick

But in comparison, in the last 40 years(by Edwards arm count), half of their first picks have either been RB's or CB's.

How can you expect to have a consistently good franchise when you have consistently poor QB play.....................yet aren't willing to draft QB's with your premier pick......ever?

  2. I'm old enough to have been at that Colts game in 1971. It was at the Rockpile, making it even less enjoyable. My fear is that this year's season finale at New England will be really ugly. Nothing like ending a bad season with a "run for the bus" road game (45-6 loss at San Diego in 1969, 45-7 loss at Miami in 1970, 58-20 loss at Baltimore in 1976....not to mention the 31-0 loss at New England in 2003). If the game is important to the Pats, we may have a new contender.

I was at that game. But the most embarassing has to be losing to the expansion seahawks in their first year 56 to 17.

Our coach, Jim Ringo, quit at halftime, and the players had to convince him to come out for the 2nd half.

  3. I admit I was wrong about:

    - Chan: seems to be a really good head coach

    - Lee Evans: is not missed as the young WR's are stepping up

    - OLine: has been amazing (no sacks in 2 games and great holes for the RB's)

Still it is only 3 games in - long way to go.

But since we still have not seen anything from last year's draft (Spiller, Troupe, Carrington, ..) and aside from Dareus, very little help from this year's draft i am not yet sold on Buddy.

  4. I am glad we now know what you would do...in a separate thread from the multiple other threads already discussing the draft. Out long national nightmare is now over.

Some people have lives aside from reading every single post that comes up on this site.

If you knew it was redundant, you did not have to read it.

  5. Not criticizing, just discussing:

    THANK YOU

If you think McKelvin and Whitner haven't panned out, don't you need to replace them? Gotta draft DBs to do that. It's also one of the positions where you need a lot of bodies, period.

    AGREED (SEE LATER)

It's pretty much consensus among all of the draft "experts" that Williams had a 1st round grade, and the Bills got him in R2.

OF COURSE WHEN YOU HAVE THE 34TH PICK, IT IS TOUGH NOT TO GET SOMEONE WITH A FIRST ROUND GRADE.

You contradict yourself when you say you wouldn't have selected a RB and then you have Rodgers going in R5. Two RBs just isn't enough, and White was a real steal in the position at which he was taken.

POINT TAKEN - BUT I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED STANSZI.

It would have been interesting to bring in the stable of LBs you've noted. The secondary would be a bare cupboard, though.

BUT WE WOULD STILL HAVE MOST OF SECONDARY BACK ASIDE FROM WHITNER AND FLORENCE - BOTH OF WHOM WE COULD STILL SIGN.

I agree with you about the philosophy (this year) of taking studs from big time schools. These guys all know what success looks and feels like.

  6. My take is that again we took many DB’s – it seems such a waste to draft DB’s just to replace players who did not pan out (McKelvin, Whitner…) or whom we can/do not resign (Winfield, Clements, Greer, Florence).

I also would not have taken a running back at all – we have 2 good ones and they are a dime a dozen.

What I would have done is totally stock up on LB’s – which in a 3-4 are the heart of the defense and of which you can never have enough

    1. Dareus - no brainer – BPA and total position of need

    2. Akeem Ayers or traded down for a team looking for QB – Don’t like the selection of Aaron Williams

    3. Martez Wilson

    4. Luke Stocker or Casey Matthews

5A. Ricky Stanszi or Jacquizz Rodgers

    5B. Like Hairston Pick

    6. Quan Sturdivant

    7. OK with picks – those are crap shoots

With this draft we would have had a totally stud LB corps.

    Additional notes:

    1. I am glad the Nix learned his lesson and is drafting players from LSU, Bama, Texas instead of Arkansas State & Central Florida.

    2. Our defense being good is being predicated on Troup and Carrington becoming ‘players’; but I saw no evidence of that last year.

    3. I assume that McCargo (McCarGone)and Maybin (has been) are not long for the NFL.

    Go ahead and criticize!

  7. I know it is shoulda coulda woulda but..

In 2004, we traded up to Losman

Had we used the extra picks to trade up just THREE spots, we could have had Rothlisberger

In 2005, had we NOT traded up for Losman, we could have drafted Rodgers

The ironic thing is that supposedly we traded up to keep Green Bay from Drafting him

On another point, it kills me seeing all of these 1st and 2nd year players start and conribute on super bowl teams (Quarles, Matthews, Raji, Bulaga,...) especially since we could have had most of them, and our draftees can not even dress during the regular season

  8. 1. around 1970, getting candy from Paul Guidry while trick or treating

    2. being invited in to Jim Schonfeld's house and getting $5 while collecting for charity in 1973

    3. Seeing OJ walk out of Ralph's box at Rich Stadium in September 1980 when his number was retired, punching him in his arm and telling him "hey man, you are still the greatest" (pre-murder)

    4. As a 14 year old during the blizzard of 1977, accidentally walking into a Buffalo Braves practice at the Jewish Center and having the coach Tates Locke, ask if we wanted to help out. Of course we said yes. So he asked me to "go shag some balls for AD" (dantley). My brother was shooting around with Randy Smith, and Randy was making fun of his shooting style.

    5. In 1977, I was on a cross country teen trip and we were staying at the same hotel in San Diego as all of the old-timers from the 1950 Dodgers-Giants game. All weekend, we hung out with Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca, Pee Wee Reese (tried on his world series ring),.... Also saw Don newcombe, Don Black, Willie Mays, ...

    6. A few years ago, a client hired Reggie Jackson to hang out at their event. However, only a few people showed up. So, I sat right next to Reggie for 1 1/2 hours with 4 other people, while he regaled us with stories (mostly off-color).

  9. if the Bills had not drafted at all in 2010. the team would have been no different and would have had the same record.

i.e. not a single player from the draft had any impact the entire season! I see rookies contributing on all of the playoff teams but not on a 4-12 Bills team.

    what makes anybody think that

    a) any of the 2010 draftees will blossom in 2011

    b) our so-called "build through the draft" will lead to better results in the future

  10. Javid Best has been hurt all year. Spiller's role is more of WR which takes longer to develop. Not to mention we had to showcase Lynch which took development time away from him.

    Bush's first year

    2006 New Orleans Saints att155 yd565 3.6

Javid best 444 yards and a 3.6 average. Not any better than Spiller

In most people's opinion, as an overall #1 Bush is a bust!

  11. Fixed. Halftime only needs to be long enough to 1) take a leak, 2) get a fresh beer, 3) refill your plate.

It is arguable that we lost two super bowls (1 & 4) because of long half times.

During both of those games we had halftime leads.

With the long intermission we lost momentum and gave Parcells/Belichik & Jimmy Johnson time to make significant adjustments

  12. Fair catch, go to the CFL no yards rule, you get a return on every punt.

    That is a good idea.

Exactly why the league WON'T adopt that rule. I have this arguement with my college football-lovin' buddies all the time. IMO, the best they could do is give refs latitude to decide flagrant (spot of the foul) or unintentional (15 yards/auto 1st down).

The problem is that the league is trying to get away from such subjectivity - that is why there is no longer a 5 yard face mask penalty

  13. Just two:

    1.) Make pass interference a 15-yard penalty.

I considered that as too many times pass interference is somewhat questionable but is a 50 yard penalty. College is a bit better with the 15 yard maximum penalty.

However, the problem would be that every a DB is beaten long, they would intentionally tackle the receiver to prevent a TD and just get 15 yards.

  14. I second this. Coming back from commercial after a score to just see a quick kick-off before immediately going back to commercial is ridiculous.

I third. A few years ago, there was a game where there was a turnover => COMMERCIAL, then injury => COMMERCIAL, then end of quarter => COMMERCIAL, then TD => COMMERCIAL, then kickoff => COMMERCIAL.

In about 15 minutes there were 5 plays.

  15. If you could change some NFL rules what would you change?

    I will propose a few:

    1) if you win a challenge, you don't lose a challenge in the future

    2) you can not call time out a split second before a FG

    3) make the goal posts closer together - Field goal kickers are now just too good and it prevents teams from going for it on 4th down

  16. I kind of remember the game, I played pretty good!

If I remember right Butch returned an interception for 40 yards and we won 37-35 or something like that!

I was 6 years old, and that was my the first Bills game my dad took me too. We won 37-35 to beat the Jets because we had 3 INT's for TD's including one of 100+ by Tom Janek.

That was the year the Jets won the Super Bowl, and that was the Bills' only win the entire year!
