  1. No offense, but are you old enough to remember the training camp Anderson had his rookie year? That was a very easy cut to make, as he was nowhere near NFL-ready. The Bills were in a no-win position as there was no practice squad in those days and he was not good enough to carry (no matter what he turned into after leaving Buffalo).

I can't figure out the Bell situation, unless there was some sense on Joel's part that the NFL was just not what he wanted.

You are correct in that I didn't see Anderson in training camp. Something must have changed when the Steelers picked him up for the regular season. He went 10-12 with a long of 48 yds and 22-22 in PATs. I have no idea what happened between camp and reg season but the Steelers obviously saw something the Bills didn't.

As for J. Bell's motivation, I don't see that as the issue. He has the small school chip on his shoulder. I think the coaching staff was so concerned with the # of rookie linemen they were carrying (including projected starters) that they didn't want to risk a back up roster spot on a small school UDFA. It looks like a timid safety pick situation to me. I guess we'll learn more as the season progresses.

  2. Wow. So according to your list, the Bills miss one player about every 10 years. Real hall-of-famers too. ;) No wonder your panties are in such a knot.

Also these are all players the Bills drafted and brought to camp. How about the dozens of OTA castoffs like Joel Bell who go on to become SB MVPs? Where's that list? Remember you jumped all over me over Bell.

These are 3 players I found with very little trouble along with the ones listed by others on this thread. Conservatively we can estimate that the Bills have thrown away 1 quality player every 5 years. What difference would that make? Take Anderson for example, he played from '82-04. In that 23 year period how many games did the Bills loose? If those games were added to the win column through the contributions of this cast-off with a career 80% accuracy and a career long of 55yards, how would that have affected the Bills records? How many years would they have made the playoffs? How many times would they have had home field advantage? Would they have advanced further? Now don't start whining for me to answer for you. This is your homework, time to get off the lazy dismissals and start looking objectively at the performance of the team you root for.

After you have examined the impact of this 1 diamond in the rough would have had on the team, begin to consider the added impact of the other players (1 every 5 yrs est.) especially if 1 or 2 of them are still playing when the next diamond is polished and begins to shine. Then you will realize the secret of consistent SB contenders.

As to the case of Bell in particular, this is an obvious example of casting off a big (6-8, 318) diamond without exerting even a little elbow grease. Again: the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. If you are satisfied with going 7-9 eternally, don't bother with the homework just keep following blindly.

  3. for a team that hasn't made the playoffs in a decade, what makes you think we have the time or inclination to start polishing diamonds pulled out of a goat's a$$?? it's kinda hard to be a SB contender without even reaching the playoffs first!

That statement proves that something's got to change. Read carefully the last sentece of my post:

"Every team has a similar list but the SB contenders spend the time to polish the diamonds in the rough rather than tossing them out while looking for a quick fix."

The definition of insanity is to continue doing what you have been doing and expecting a different result. The way to become a winner is to watch what winners do and emulate there practices.

  4. I didn't think I was being a jerk with this post but maybe I missed something. I'd love to see you list of Bills camp cuts that went on to long NFL careers. It must be a long one for you to write a snarky post llike this.

Other than the players already listed here are a few others:

    2001 6th rd. Jimmy Williams- DB 4 yrs w/ 49ers, 2 yrs w/ Seahawks

    1988 10th rd. Martin Mayhew- DB 4yrs w/ Redskins, 4yrs w/ Bucks

    and my favorite...

    1982 7th rd. Gary Anderson- K ’82-94 w/ Steelers, ’95-96 w/ Eagles, ’97 49ers, ’98-02 Vikings, ’03-04 Titans

These don't even take into account the players who were Bills for 1-2 yrs and then played for other teams for 4-8 more years.

Every team has a similar list but the SB contenders spend the time to polish the diamonds in the rough rather than tossing them out while looking for a quick fix.

  5. Waiving Joel Bell seems pretty shocking to me. But then maybe all the positive stories about him were just due to his interesting history.

Big daddy, do you know any more about Joel and why this might have happened? You were a big Joel Bell fan. Are you a Furman alum or friend of the family? I just wondered if you might have any insight on this.

Joel seemed like a guy that could be developed in a couple years, but the coaches must have seen some show-stopper in his game, something that made even taking him to training camp a moot point.

I'm still a big Joel Bell fan and am waiting to see who he catches on with. I spotted him in '07 when he played against my team (Clemson) and was a stone wall. I then caught a game on ESPN Classic from '06 between Furman and UNC where he threw DE's around like rag dolls. I made it a point to see the '08 game between Furman and Va Tech, same results. I admit that after reading his bio I picked him as my diamond in the rough to track.

I don't think the coaches saw anything that was a "show-stopper". I think it was a numbers thing where to many experienced back-ups squeezed out the UDFA. Still, I believe this is a decision that will haunt the Bills. One question I ask is are these experienced back-ups the future of the team or is it the player who needs some development but has a huge up side?

  6. And so the Joel Bell era comes to an end. Shocking.

Save this post for future reference. In a couple of years you will either look like a sarcastic jerk or a short sighted jerk. In 2000 you probably laughed at NE for "wasting" a 6th round pick on that Brady kid.

The Bills have a long and storied history of signing raw talent and releasing them too soon. When other teams pick them up and turn them into solid starters you whine "how could those stupid coaches let that kind of talent go".

I think this decission will turn around and bite them in the ... the area of your expertise.

  7. It's obvious that BB's elavator doesnt go to the top, be he succeeded in one thing, creating a thread that ticked everyone off with it's stupidity, and confirming the point that we are all rabid, passionate fans that can't wait for the season to start!

There's nothing wrong with BB's elevator.... It's just that his building is vertically challenged.

(don't worry Stumpy, I've got your back)

  8. You missed the entire point, God doesn't wear a Bills uniform, not with this coaching staff, and even if he did he would fail behind the O line Jauron is putting on the field this season.

So you be certain to go to your synagogue / church and get on your knees and pray to your God or god, that Trent Edwards doesn't get sacrificed or crucified this season.

In my earlier post, God was the QB, Jesus was the RB, get it right.

You have missed the point of my post. Yes, God is the QB and Jesus is the RB. That's why the plays cited were of JESUS (the RB). BTW, your metaphor falls apart whe you talk about the QB (GOD) being crucified. My point is that God can do ALL things (even without an O line) and that He can not fail regardless of any prediction you make. Anyway, since this is all in fun there's no reason to get your blood presure up.

  9. God was out for the season last year, but he should be back and throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker this year. Jesus was the RB, not God. From the looks of this years Bills O line I'll wager God and his Patriot crew will be sweeping the Bills again this season as they part the Bills defense like the red sea and score over and over.

Dunno why God would play for :flirt: Belichick :w00t: though.

Yep, you definitely need that upgrade. Don't waste BIG time chasing a small "g" god.

  10. Twas on a Sunday afternoon

The boys were in the yard

    With Jesus playing fullback

    And Moses playing guard.

    The angels in the bandstand

    Let out a mighty yell

    As Jesus scored a touchdown

To beat the boys from hell.

"Rock 'em Sock 'em Moses block 'em.

    Yea God"

Nothing like having old Mo' on your side. You know, he's been known to open a hole big enough to drive an entire nation through.

  11. You could have the lord god almighty himself as QB and the arc angels as his receivers, his son Jesus as the RB, and if there isn't a decent O line in front of them...they will fail.

    I have to disagree. You obviously haven't read their press clippings;

    Luke 4:28-30

All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff. BUT HE WALKED RIGHT THROUGH THE CROWD AND WENT ON HIS WAY.

    John 7:30

At this they tried to seize him, BUT NO ONE LAID A HAND ON HIM, BECAUSE HIS TIME HAD NOT YET COME.

    John 8:59

At this, they picked up stones to stone him, BUT JESUS HID HIMSELF, SLIPPING AWAY FROM THE TEMPLE GROUNDS.

No O line metioned anywhere. If you think God doesn't have a miraculous ground game, maybe you worship a second string god. If so, you need to upgrade to the real thing.

  12. Are you calling T.O.'s 1 year contract with Buffalo a rehab stint?

That's exactly what it is. If he wants to sign another big $$ contract with a SB contending team he has to show he can keep his nose clean and not be a destructive force off the field. Organizations who have carefully crafted a team chemistry of winning don't want to destroy it with the addition of one talented troublemaker. The bills OTOH, don't have to worry about upsetting a chemistry they don't have and are willing to risk a locker room meltdown in order to upgrade their talent level.

  13. You mean the Jerry Rice who was no longer on the 49ers after the 2000 season?

He IMO doesn't come close to Rice in terms of overall production, but let's not toss out lame excuses.

Ask Trent Edwards how big Jim Kelly's shadow is, and he hasn't played in quite a while.

It's hard to replace a legend. As any one of the long line of Alabama coaches can tell you; the longer Bear Bryant has been gone, the better he was.

  14. Hear me out before you call me crazy. Jerry Rice had 2 HOF QB's throwing to him for the most part of his career in Montana and Young. I dont think that any QB that has ever thrown to TO will make the HOF. And yes I know that in San Fran TO had Steve Yound but that was only for a few seasons. Obviously Rice is a class act and was a saint compared to Owens but I think that if you consider who Owens had throwing to him, he should be given more credit than he has gotten.

    And let the ripping begin!

Refresh my memory please... Who was it that demanded to be traded so he didn't have to live in Jerry Rice's shadow? If TO could have controlled his ego in SF he could have had the same HOF QBs throwing to him. Choices have consequences. Intelligence is also part of being a HOF player.

OK I'll put up my chainsaw for a while.

  15. You aint too bright are you? Stop the insanity. Vick can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Thankfully the Bills didn't draft any barns at the WR position. They did sign a free agent WR that's the broadside of a certain farm animal. TO whom may I be referring?
