‘Hamlin, 24, remained in critical condition inside the intensive care unit of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the Bills said in a statement.’

‘“I think the fact that they restored his normal heartbeat on the field before he went to the hospital is an encouraging sign,” said Dr. Anne B. Curtis, a cardiac electrophysiologist who nearly five years ago helped develop guidelines to manage patients with ventricular arrhythmias and prevent sudden cardiac death.’

‘“First and foremost, the Bills’ medical staff did a phenomenal job,” former Jacksonville Jaguars head athletic trainer and physical therapist Mike Ryan said. “It’s a scary situation and you go onto the field and you don’t know if a player has gotten the wind knocked out of him or a player is unconscious and you literally have a life-threatening situation at hand. Kudos to them in a difficult situation. They had to get very aggressive in managing the injury.”’

‘In Pittsburgh, coach Mike Tomlin met with reporters for his normal Tuesday availability. Hamlin is deeply tied to the Pittsburgh community, growing up in McKees Rocks, and then attending the University of Pittsburgh. He’s known Tomlin since he was young, and Tomlin was deeply impacted by Monday night’s events.’

‘As of Wednesday morning, the donations had ballooned to more than $6 million, with more than 201,000 donors.’

‘The fans probably weren’t expecting that kind of compassionate gesture from the wife of the Buffalo Bills’ Hall of Fame quarterback, but it no doubt was exactly what they needed a day after watching one of their heroes, Damar Hamlin, collapse on the field in Cincinnati.’

‘Everybody found the right tone covering the horrific injury to Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, but especially Booger McFarland, Ryan Clark, Lisa Salters and Scott Van Pelt.’

‘But there was no obvious sign of that prior to Hamlin’s collapse. Higgins hit Hamlin in the chest with his right shoulder, but the Bills safety was able to drag him down. The medical crisis quickly ensued.’
