Two Bills Drive

‘“I think a lot of it is, one, obviously, our execution, and just making sure that we’re on top of the details of protection assignment of routes depth, route location, and decision by the quarterback and getting guys the ball,” offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey said Monday. “So, it’s overall execution, I think, first and foremost. But then what really kind of goes into that, as well, is I think we were probably a little bit higher on third-and-longer situations this week … So, we need to make sure we’re doing a good job of giving ourselves a good opportunity on first and second down to convert on third down by staying out of third-and-longer type situations.”’

‘The Bills are holding foes to 99.8 yards a game on the ground. The Bills’ run defense is third best in the league, according to Football Outsiders’ DVOA run rankings, which factors in quality of the competition. It’s a noteworthy improvement over last season. The Bills ranked 13th against the run in 2021, allowing 109.8 yards a game.’

‘The fact the Bills went 0 for 4 on third-and-short situations, with either 2 or 3 yards to go, helped negate any kind of rhythm or continuity in the Buffalo offense Sunday against the New York Jets. The Bills ran only 54 plays.’

‘Drops can be somewhat of a subjective stat, but The Buffalo News charted four of them in the win over the Jets. That comes after the team also had four drops against New England in Week 13. The website Pro Football Reference tracks drops as part of its advanced statistics. It has charged the Bills with 28 drops this season, which is third most in the NFL, behind only Green Bay (30) and Miami (29). The Bills do throw the ball more than most teams – their 477 targets are tied for seventh most in the NFL – so drop percentage is a better indicator of just how much of a problem area it has been for the offense. At 5.9% of targets dropped, the Bills rank seventh in the NFL, so it’s a big issue for the offense.’

‘White was one of seven defensive players to play every snap against the Jets. He was joined by linebackers Matt Milano and Tremaine Edmunds, safeties Damar Hamlin and Jordan Poyer and cornerbacks Taron Johnson and Dane Jackson.’
