Why is D. Bell taking so much criticism here?

Recommended Posts

My guess is that Bell was actually graded out very well by the coaches from yesterday's game. I re-watched every single offensive snap again on DVR, specifically focusing only on Bell. He made 3 mistakes. The rest of the snaps he seemed to be doing his job. Not perfect, but not too bad for his 6th NFL start.

Some are already running him out of town, but I say please watch and evaluate an entire game performance. He was far from the problem on the OL yesterday. Some who are infatuated with the interior may want to take a closer look there.

It seems like each game, he is flagged for one or multiple false starts, and he gets beat like a drum. It's really not his fault. He's been thrown into that spot and it's a baptism by fire. I wouldn't give up on him though. I agree our whole OL is at fault. Everyone has taken their turn getting blown up.

That's the thing though, he's not getting beat like a drum. He had 3 bad plays yesterday, one of them resulting in a sack, out of all the offensive snaps. No one ever plays a perfect game. I just think all the "he sucks" talk is a little premature, and not really fact based. Looking for some input from some of the OL gurus to either confirm or deny.

I've been one of D. Bell's supporters. I believe that he has the tools, but needs to add strength in the offseason and needs to focus on keeping his head in the game - eliminating unnecessary penalties. I think he does have a high ceiling though and I'm looking forward to seeing how this season prepares him for the next...

Bell will improve and improve more, and be our long time starting LT.

Because half the morons who post on here don't even watch the games. D Bell played good but not great. He pass protected reasonably well(most of the rush was over the RT where Peppers was) but had little to no push in the run game. In fact I think Wood is the only lineman who gets any push whatsoever.

You either are pushing for Ron Jaworski's job at ESPN or you need a life. Seriously, Fitz was pressured on 14 of 24 offensive plays where he dropped back, that is why the whole offensive line is scrutinized, coupled with the fact that they have given up the second most sacks in the NFL and he plays the most important position on the line.

Please watch again and tell me how many times Fitz had to hurry his throws because of pressure. Also, when a LT gets constant help from a TE or a RB, a team forfeits these weapons.

I wouldn't be surprised if some day down the road Bell picks up his play to that of a serviceable backup. If he fails to reach this plateau, this wouldn't surprise me either.

I rewatched the safety play and Levitre missed his reach block by a mile. It was his guy the completely blew up the play. I'm neither condeming Levitre's overall play nor endorsing Bell's. It was just an observation on one play.

P.S. Did anyone catch Mike Williams playing right tackle last night? What a nightmare from the past....

Perhaps its just my Bills colored glasses, but I see our line getting most abused by bull rushes. The outside rushes don't seem to do as well against the. If so, then their technique wouldn't be so much the problem as would their strength. Am I correct in thinking these guys could get better, in time, with more strength and conditioning work?

Or am I just hoping against hope?

No offense, but either you have got wayyy too much time on your hands or you need to get a friend, or a dog, or a dog that's your friend, or something.

Or maybe it speaks to the phenomenal job market of WNY and the socialist state of NY.

That being said, I think alot of it boils down to patience. I think alot of fans are frustrated with waiting for the "brain trust" at OBD to live up to their dubious title. Modrak and Guy certainly have had a vast amount of time (an entire decade?) to build something here.

They developed Peters, and not to get into the whole thing again, but then he is traded away at his emerging peak. The organization fails to make the correct calls on free agents (signing Dockery, Royal, Triplett), and then lets the good ones get away (Fletcher, P. Williams, Winfield, Peters). Their drafting this decade has been hit-or-miss (mostly miss), thus the ranks are seldom filled with adequate replacements to the departed free agents.

And then there is plain old development time. It takes time for someone who never really played football to come in and contribute in the NFL as a starting LT. Does everyone have patience for it?

Wood and Levitre are kids playing against experienced pros. I like them both a lot. Hangartner is underrated imo. He is not great but he is a brawler and I appreciate this after Fowler.

Left Tackles are scooped up early. My guess is that Bell lasted until round 7 because it is said that he did 9 reps with 225 at the combines. 9 reps!!! I would expect 9 reps from Donte Whitner.

When he is in space he can make plays because he is fast, and of course bigger than defensive backs. Imo it is a HUGE reach to expect someone such as Bell to be strong enough to compete in the NFL at any decent level.

Please understand how much I want to be proven wrong.

It's hard to be a young LT in this league most cannot wait for the improvement to happen. I hope all of the young guys including Meredith get better and remain starters. actually the player I see having the most issues is Levitre he seems to get blown up a lot.

I truly hope you're wrong too. Because, as I see it, I'd be absolutely shocked if they draft an OT early next year. I'm sure they'll be thinking... "Bell had a full year and with another offseason, he'll only get better. And we have Butler coming back, who is solid."

I guess we'll have to see how the season plays out, but we may be in desparate need for a QB as well. And we've been in desparate need for a LB. I guess we'll know more in a few months.

I did 9 reps when I reported to camp my freshman year of college. I was a 210 lb division 3 football player. 9 Reps is really, really bad for a lineman. I don't know Trent Edwards combine numbers, but I bet he can do more than 9 reps.

While I agree that his play is not of a quality starter right now I actually think that Bell has the ceiling to turn into one.

I think that being a servicable backup would be a dissapointment with him.....and it would be unfortunate because we have needs in other areas.
