SOURCE: BROWNS PURSUING COWHER

Posted by Mike Florio on November 20, 2008, 5:00 p.m. EST

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that the Browns have approached former Steelers coach Bill Cowher regarding the possibility of becoming the next coach in Cleveland.

Per the source, the Browns are willing to give Cowher a contract worth $8 million to $9 million per year.

Presumably, Cowher’s arrival would occur only if G.M. Phil Savage were fired or significantly marginalized. (Maybe Savage can go work for the Bills — or if all else fails he can root for them.) Cowher would want final say over personnel, and Cowher would want to install one or more of his former Steelers colleagues into key positions.

Likely candidates, if they can finagle a path out of Pittsburgh, would be director of football operations Kevin Colbert and/or director of business operations Omar Khan.

Cowher played for the Browns (i.e., Ravens) from 1980 through 1982, and he served as special teams coach in 1985 and 1986. He was moved to defensive backs coach in 1987, and he remained in that position through 1988.

As mentioned by others elsewhere, Cowher isn't a realistic option for the Bills, since Ralph isn't going to pay the kind of $$ he's looking for.

Cowher has also coached and played within the organization before plus he is familiar with people within that division.

No way Cowher comes here.

absolutely true.....

If someone like Jimbo or Thurman would try some sort of hypnotism on old Ralphy , you know so he thinks he's playing Monopoly or something and Bill Cowhers Boardwalk, we could make this happen...

people keep saying Ralph will never pay that kind of money for a coach...and theyre right..but another aspect of high end coach's people keep leaving out is most coaches like Cowher want higher power than just coach..some want VP..some want GM and others just want their guys in the FO..Ralph will never allow this to happen...so combine those 2 aspects and you get 1st year coaches and mediocre coaches in Buffalo.

Please MR Wilson, you can't take it with you!

Hire a guy who can win a super bowl for you,Bill Cower!

Or even talk Marty Shottenheimer out of retirement if Cower won't come here.

I was a big fan of Dick Jauron and his coaching style and his rep for building a strong defense and power running game.

It appears he gives his coordinator's way to much control and lets them do whatever they want. Most notably offensively, throwing the ball out of the shotgun on third and one 3 times against the Patriots should have cost Schonert his job...or at least a severe butt kicking, nope he is still calling stupid passing plays.

If Jauron refuses to take control and pound the rock then lets get Bill Cower or Marty ball in Buffalo.

Lord knows I want to see the bills run the ball like the NY Giants are doing, 200 yards on the ground against that vaunted Ravens "D"

Unitil the Bills get new ownership, the team and its management will look just about like it does now. B players. Cowher quit because the Rooneys would not pay him what he wanted. Simple as that. As soon as someone does, he's back. Browns have a new stadium and revenue sources therefrom that the Bills will never have in Buffalo. So the Bills (Buffalo) will just wallow around and be 8 and 8 Forever....

Nailed it.

Everyone here should give up on Bill Cowher right now, Ralph's track record speaks for itself. Expect another coaching change soon (thank god) but expect it to be either a washed up NFL coach or an up and coming college coach.

The only way Cowher ends up coaching the Bills is when their first name changes to 'Toronto'.

Only then will the Bills have new owners who are willing to pony up the dough.

Everybody talks about Cowher like he is the end all be all of coaches when in reality, if it weren't for Schottenheimer, Cowher would never of gotten a chance to coach in the NFL. Heck, Tony Dungy, Cam Cameron and Herm Edwards wouldn't have either.

Marty has received a lot of criticism in his days as a HC because he has won more games than anyone in the NFL without coaching his team to the Super Bowl. I would much prefer him than Jauron. At least with MS, you would get a player from Buffalo's AFL past glory, a HC with a record thats 74 games over .500 (200-126), and a coach who has a specific mentality with regard to football philosophy.

One thing that kills me is that this Bills team has zero identity. Look at the teams that are playing winning football right now. The Giants, Titans, Carolina Panthers, and Steelers are teams that have an identity of playing smash mouth football on both sides the ball. They win by running the football and stopping the run. At least with a coach like MS, you know you are going to get Marty ball and that could be a successful philosophy here in B-Lo.

It is deliciously ironic that Bills fans don't want Marty as their coach, a guy that has won everywhere he has ever been, and who has built teams with good defense and pounding running games; and, they're argument is that "Marty has never won a Super Bowl." Yet, some were content to wait and see if Dick Jauron, a guy who's lost everywhere he's ever been, could find the open end of the paper bag.

Has Dick's teams ever had a specific identity besides losing? He is still trying to establish an identity and it is one that has proven to be unsuccessful in 9 years of coaching. 1 winning season in his career as a head coach.

At least with Schottenheimer, you know what you're getting. It may be conservative to a fault, but it would comply with the blue collar mentality that the Buffalo fan base is predicated upon. I would venture out to say that we have all the pieces for a successful Marty Ball style offense with a bruising RB in Lynch and the change of pace back in Jackson along with the heaviest OLine in the NFL. Schottenheimer could get the most out of the talent that we have here.
