We can probably sign him to much less money at this point than Clements and he is turning out to be an even bigger impact player than Clements. Plus, his attitude is so refreshing (i.e., he's humble) compared to a lot of these NFL players. I'd love to sign both McGee and Clements--but if I had to pick one, I'd probably go with McGee. 478801[/snapback] Agreed McGee is our #1 priority...but signing him is not going to be easy... Why would he take less money when his market worth is more...This is probably only shot to get the big money and he is going to grab every single penny that can be pryed out.... Remember last year Carolina paid to a less known CB Lucas big money..... I don't see McGee backing down from that kind of demand....especially considering he is also a KR.... If people think that McGee is going to ask way much less than Clements they are going to be in for a shock....The only way for us is to re-sign clements at end of this year, adn give McGee the higest RFA salary and then renegotiate at the end of the next year....But then we have too many needs to take care...like re-siging McGahee to an extension...Mike Williams Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Note that the reason, IMHO, that the bills will not go that high is not out of cheapness but rather b/c TD doesn't believe in committing that much cap space to a DB, which I agree with. The man is a prince. He has ponied up plenty of cash for bonuses and free agents. There is no cheapskate factor. If he was in it for the money, he would have sold the team for $750 million a long time ago. As far as what do you spend the money on if not your own good young players -- I agree with this up to a point, but that point is below what it will cost to sign a top-tier DB. A DB just doesn't have that much impact on the game, unless he's Deion Sanders in his prime. McGee is good, and maybe even comparable to Deion as a KR (but probably not quite as good), but he doesn't shut down half of the downfield the way Deion did. Again, I ask: who would you rather have: one of our 2 (admittedly excellent) CBs, or Bruce Smith or Ted Washington in their primes? There is no doubt, is there? A great D-linemen, which is what our D is crying out for, is just much more effective than a great CB. I don't know who the top DTs/DEs/LTs on the market are going to be in the next couple of years. However, the bills shouldn't use up their cap space just because they have it -- this would preclude future steps down the road. There are always good veterans unexpectedly becoming available -- like Milloy, Pete Kendall, Corey Simon, etc. And by the way, another expensive position that IS worth the money and that it is quite likely we will need to spend money on next year or the year after is QB. Some players have been placed in a specialty roll like Coy Wire who is a 3rd strig S, and a ST's captain AND ... Mcgee is a RFA this offseason. He won't be going anywhere.
