I'm surprised, people get past DUI's all the time...this is deeper than that is my guess.  Did not read the article yet though

I think it was also about his contract. CBS paid a fortune to keep him from going ESPN, then had to pay Nantz and others more, too. This was a cheap way to force him out.

This^^^^.  The thing about Romo that was most interesting is he would tell you presnap what was coming.  More often than not he was correct.  CBS inexplicably told him to stop doing that, and he became instantly forgettable. They destroyed by far their best analyst.

Yeah, early on he'd look at the line of scrimmage and tell us what qb was seeing and what he should do. It was great to understand how a qb thinks.

They’re analysts. Their job is to analyze each play and offer up commentary after it happens. That doesn’t work with the “less is more” philosophy. Do fans of every team get this worked up over announcing crews, or is it just a Buffalo thing? Some are better than others but it really doesn’t impact my enjoyment of the game 🤷‍♂️

Well said.

Wish all the best for Tony. He seems to be a very likable guy. Hope he can get things back on track.

Sorry for going a bit off topic here, but in discussing color commentators losing jobs, how is it that Cris Collinsworth still has a job? As we know, as former players get older, they usually lose their color commentator spots to younger guys (ala Steve Tasker and so many others getting the boot) because the younger audiences don't know the older players. They want younger (retired) players in the booth that the audience knows. Here are the years of retirement for the current color commentators:

Player/commentator           Year they retired

Logan Ryan                             2023

Jason kelce                             2023

JJ Watt                                    2022

Tom Brady                               2022

Greg Olsen                              2020

Drew Brees                             2020

Robert Turbin                          2019

Luke Kuechley                        2019

Tony Romo                              2016

Jonathan Vilma                      2013

Trent Green                            2008

Adam Archuleta                     2007

Ross Tucker                           2005

Kurt Warner                           2004

Troy Aikman                          2000

Mark Schlereth                     2000

Daryl Johnston                      1999

Lousi Riddick                         1998

Cris Collinsworth                  1988

What blackmail does Collinsworth have on the networks that he is still around, when he is (and always has been) a terrible announcer (imo) and way too often biased. He's not a great looking guy, he doesn't have the best voice in the business. He isn't more insightful than other announcers. He only played 8 years in the league and never won a Super Bowl. He's 186th on the all-time receiving yards list and he didn't even make the all-time receiving TD list on Pro Football Reference (that lists the top 236 guys---Collinsworth had only 36 career TDs). Honestly, what is it? I just don't get it.

<End of rant---and sorry for straying off topic a bit...Simon, feel free to delete if you feel it's inappropriate here>

And collinsworth's pretty much an a-hole too.  Look at the PFF deal where they left their employees dangling, and then were some allegations against him during playing days if im not mistaken.

Hard core football fans really got something out of him tipping plays. It is nice to pair the knowledge we have with the knowledge of a former QB. Unfortunately, too often telecasts cater to the lowest common denominator of fans. The casuals. CBS turned him into a caricature of himself.

Hope he gets off the sauce for his own sake. Then I hope he gets a job on one of the streaming services where he can be himself.

this thought comes to mind every time I’m forced to watch Fox broadcast a game.

Dumb question, why would they ask him to stop?

Absolutely but I don't think that's what the networks really want

Tony was diagnosing things and telling you what was going to happen before that happened... Which I think took some of the spontaneity out of it

I think they should have let him run with it but I understand why... Somebody with a genius football IQ isn't always the best commentator or analyst because he sees the game different than 99% of people alive

Like he's a savant

A lot of people here are accusing the NFL and CBS of overreacting to an isolated incident.

That’s not what Romo’s termination is about.

You don’t have to dig very deep to know why he’s no longer with CBS.

I hope het gets his drinking under control.

Partly for his own sake and partly because he could be an asset in the booth if he's not two sheets to wind.

And maybe, just maybe he simply had a bad one off. There seems to be truth however, that his performance and preparation has slipped since his strong beginning.

That is a shame.  I enjoyed his commentary and general enthusiasm.  I loathe JJ Watt and think he is awful.  They should try to buy out the contract for Greg Olson and put him on their #1 team.  I think he is great.

I just read Greg Olsen and Troy Aikman's contacts are both up after this season.

Ok, I guess that means they are not happy with the deal they made with him.  I thought him and Nantz were the best team out there. I don’t love JJ Watt but that’s just me.  Also does not actually matter who the announcers for me but it might for some.

There has to be more to this story.

I highly doubt this guy is fired over one drinking violation.

Must have been hauling moonshine or phony Rebok sneakers too

I fully agree. I have seen his announcing criticized here and never understood why. I think that he was a smart, informative announcer.
