quincy Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Most people were fans of his during that first season and were searching for which game was to be commentated on by Nantz and Romo. Then his asset in tipping plays was ceased and he seemed to start mailing it in at times and was at times too overly excited at times. If he can find an outlet to co-commentate with freedom and is recovered from his problems then I hope he gets another opportunity. I thought about him doing primetime national radio games but to go from being the number 1 booth to that maybe is something he wouldn't consider. Again most people liked him replacing Simms but Watt is not well liked thus far and Romo must be kicking himself for messing up his professional life. Quote

If they have something important and relevant to add, let's hear it...if not....then zip it, IMO. I get it. I feel the same way. But the NFL broadcasters do not. It is literally their jobs to fill the time with talking. They want to appeal to the largest sum of fans they can, and most fans are more casual and want the announcers to tell them what us going on. I like him too, but if you can't make a simple drive to the airport without a beer, you have issues. Quote

I remember reading a story when he was qbing the cowboys and he was driving to practice and there was a pregnant mother pulled over on the side of the road with a broken down car that obviously seen better days with two little kids in the back. He drove the mother/kids to the nearest dealership and bought them a new car and was late for practice Romo said in his statement a little while ago that he had a “dependence” on painkillers, which has led to a reliance on booze. Budkin Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I'm going to miss the interactions between Tony and Jim Nantz. At least the parodies of them. 1 1 Quote
folz Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Wish all the best for Tony. He seems to be a very likable guy. Hope he can get things back on track. Sorry for going a bit off topic here, but in discussing color commentators losing jobs, how is it that Cris Collinsworth still has a job? As we know, as former players get older, they usually lose their color commentator spots to younger guys (ala Steve Tasker and so many others getting the boot) because the younger audiences don't know the older players. They want younger (retired) players in the booth that the audience knows. Here are the years of retirement for the current color commentators: Player/commentator Year they retired Logan Ryan 2023 Jason kelce 2023 JJ Watt 2022 Tom Brady 2022 Greg Olsen 2020 Drew Brees 2020 Robert Turbin 2019 Luke Kuechley 2019 Tony Romo 2016 Jonathan Vilma 2013 Trent Green 2008 Adam Archuleta 2007 Ross Tucker 2005 Kurt Warner 2004 Troy Aikman 2000 Mark Schlereth 2000 Daryl Johnston 1999 Lousi Riddick 1998 Cris Collinsworth 1988 What blackmail does Collinsworth have on the networks that he is still around, when he is (and always has been) a terrible announcer (imo) and way too often biased. He's not a great looking guy, he doesn't have the best voice in the business. He isn't more insightful than other announcers. He only played 8 years in the league and never won a Super Bowl. He's 186th on the all-time receiving yards list and he didn't even make the all-time receiving TD list on Pro Football Reference (that lists the top 236 guys---Collinsworth had only 36 career TDs). Honestly, what is it? I just don't get it. <End of rant---and sorry for straying off topic a bit...Simon, feel free to delete if you feel it's inappropriate here> 1 1 Quote

They’re analysts. Their job is to analyze each play and offer up commentary after it happens. That doesn’t work with the “less is more” philosophy. Do fans of every team get this worked up over announcing crews, or is it just a Buffalo thing? Some are better than others but it really doesn’t impact my enjoyment of the game 🤷♂️ 1 Quote
gomper Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Romo was outstanding in his first few years tipping plays. However, as the years went on, he lost the pulse of the game by not having the immediacy he had shortly after retiring. Maybe CBS and the NFL put the brakes on his style, but his lack of preparation was apparent in the last years. Did rumored abuse factor in? Only he can answer that. It doesn't erase the fact for a short stretch of time, he was groundbreaking. 1 Quote
Buffalo Ballin Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Yeah that's Tony Romo's marquee. John Madden has his thing. So does Marv Albert and the other guy with the three pointer "BANG!" Tony Romo is he's about to take a dump or like he's in the middle of it trying to commentate. It's awesome and relatable. Quote
machine gun kelly Posted October 2 Posted October 2 This is too bad. I would’ve hoped they just let him go to rehab, and fix it. Maybe they did. Who knows. Stinks as in the beginning he was sharp as a tack. Quote

Stinks as in the beginning he was sharp as a tack. I think he will get picked up elsewhere. But I’m not sad to see him go from CBS. He and Nance are representative to me of all of Bills-Chiefs playoff games and we know how those went. Quote
Billsatlastin2018 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 (edited) I really liked Nance & Romo. And they liked the Bills story. Plus, I thought it revolutionary that he would make pre snap calls. LOVED THAT! Way beyond the curve of the various blind talking head buffoons that can’t tell whether a ball has been intercepted or fumbled- even AFTER they watch the SLO Mo replay, and never live. Sorry, he has demons. Edited October 2 by Billsatlastin2018 2 Quote
Freddie's Dead Posted October 2 Posted October 2 4 hours ago, GunnerBill said: Good. Basically from the moment CBS stopped him tipping plays he has been absolutely dreadful. This^^^^. The thing about Romo that was most interesting is he would tell you presnap what was coming. More often than not he was correct. CBS inexplicably told him to stop doing that, and he became instantly forgettable. They destroyed by far their best analyst. 1 Quote
SydneyBillsFan Posted October 2 Posted October 2 The Bills v Chiefs just won't have the same zing to it without him. 1 Quote

Stinks as in the beginning he was sharp as a tack. I honestly think CBS wasn't happy with his performance after he signed that massive deal and were looking for a way out of it. He certainly handled it to them and probably the settlement will be quite substantial. There's so much more going on behind the scenes. Al Michaels got a DUI a few years ago and it was news for a day. If the same they happened to Nance, the outcome would be quite different. That says a lot. 2 Quote

Partly for his own sake and partly because he could be an asset in the booth if he's not two sheets to wind. Funny, it works just the opposite on here. Do they sell ball washers on Amazon, cuz Mahomes is gonna need a new one. Quote

Did the nfl ever punish that coach who was having an affair with that sportswriter or that owner who was busted at a massage parlor? CBS must have stricter punishments than the NFL Quote
Mike in Horseheads Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I liked Tony and think he got wronged just like Russini did. The shield booted them 1 Quote
