Its funny how much people complain about Maxwell in games then suddenly think he is doing great when a stat like this comes out lol.

Ive been defending him the first 3 weeks for the most part when people get mad any time he gives up a catch, which has been the 2nd fewest times in the NFL lol.

Benford has had a rougher go, but he also has been covering Nico Collins and St. Brown the first 2 weeks before he got hurt who are 2 of the most difficult covers in the NFL right now - and doing so in a new system, with 6 new starters around him.  So I think he has gotten a bit too much flak even though he has had his moments of struggle early this year for sure.

All this and I am sure the cap came into consideratoin as well moving forward

The only one I have actually complained about is Alford. That guy has been terrible. Not just coverage but trying to tackle someone is some of the worst stuff I have ever seen.

Deion Sanders is in the Hall of Fame as a player and he never tackled anyone.

Are we comparing Max to Deion's cover skills and return ability? I would say Max has a lot of growing to do before we can Put him in the HOF and forgive him for his poor tackling skills.

Alford has looked lost too... bottom line the secondary needs help

I think he has been really solid coverage ... Wish he could've landed that int last week

It really could have shifted the game early

He is a smart cover corner.. he's got a lot of things to work on but he can cover well

Yeah, he stayed home and read the wheel perfectly but then just misplayed the ball.

That's a Herbert mistake that he really needs to take away and I hope he's still pissed off about it.

I'm not sure that these stats are meaningful after 3 games. Benford has been targeted 21 times while Hairston has only been targeted 11 times. Is that because Hairston is better in coverage, or because Benford is covering the other team's primary WR option?

The bolded is my semi educated guess.

Absolutely

Call quarterbacks don't really give you gifts like that you need to capitalize.. he might only get one other ball all here that is gifted to him  like that

As you said he was in great position which is half the battle.. his ability attacking the ball there was slightly off

I think that Hairston has played pretty well.

I also agree with the sentiment that Benford, while he hasn't played as well as he can, hasn't been as bad as some think.  He has been covering some of the cream of the crop receivers in all of football.  Corners will give up plays.  Elite WRs will find openings and capitalize, and you can't just wave your finger and completely shut them out from ever making plays.  I hope the toe issue doesn't linger too long for Benford.

Too many times, the old regime put more stock on tackling ability, for CBs, and blocking ability for WRs. So, if he's a little weak there but makes up for it, in coverage, all for it. The same with WR,  Kincaid for example is a below average blocker when it comes to tight ends, but an elite receiver when healthy.

I’ve consistently said he’s been by far our best DB so far this year. I mean not saying much but he’s locking down his side

Benford had been terrible by every metric this year. We can make excuses like the caliber of WR he’s faced but facts are facts he’s bern bad so far. Does that mean trade him or throw him in the trash bin absolutely not

Christian Benford is all over on the metrics

HIs Target seperation is still top 5 in the league.. meaning he's been in pretty good position a bunch, the finishing of the play just hasn't happened yet .. he's also shadowing targets at a top 10 clip most of his career

He's allowing some catches and yards but he's in the hip pocket at a very high rate which means he just needs a tiny adjustment to make the play going forward

He still has a +34 coverage grade on advanced metrics which is still a top 32 boundary corner number which factors in how often you are targeted and how often you break it up or pick it off

He had the same start last year and finished really strong

The top WRs thing is irrelevant to me. You’re supposedly a top 10 CB going against top 10 WRs . He’s also the highest paid CB on this roster by far, and he wasn’t competitive he got torched.

His EPA was by far the worst on defense through 3 weeks including against the Chargers before he got hurt. What’s the excuse for him against QJ and Tre Harris

To be fair I don't think he's a top 10 corner in the world

I think he's solid and a very good physical corner.. I personally would have him 18 to 24... I don't think he's inside the top 10 anywhere near all pro territory

But he is a solid corner.. and most corners outside of that top 10 have strengths and weaknesses

I certainly want better from him.. I do think he always grows as the season goes along  so I'm not panicking yet

He needs to get better at playing the ball in the air which is always been my number one criticism of him.. as a former college corner I know how hard it is and he's obviously a million times better than I ever was... His ball skills at the point of attack have never been the best which is what I think is holding him back from elite status

But in all forms of coverage.. press and off man and zone..  he is pretty technically efficient above average though he has some weaknesses... The more routes he sees the better his pattern recognition becomes and he starts to get into the groove

I agree it hasn't been perfect and you would want better but he started slow last year finished really strong... Some wide receivers will give him fits

But that's why it's a team game and you have 10 guys around you that impact the play... We might be shadowing him a little bit too much which is hurting him

Shadowing 55% last year and he started really really slow because that's not his real game... But as the weather got colder and the footing gets slippery his game improves... They're treating him like a true shutdown top five corner... And on a fast track that's not his game

He struggled shadowing last year in September but by November when the field is a little bit slower he hits his stride so the bills need to hope for that again

Nah, I think Bishop has been more inconsistent. Probably made a couple more noticeable plays, but he has been a step late a fair few times as well in coverage. I think CJGJ has had the best single game of our DBs last week, but for consistency down in and down out over the 3 games Max has been the most consistent.

I agree. Bishop seems to be around plays, not making them.

Such a Billsy response

How is this a Billsy response. The tweet was about McDuffie, who’s completion percentage against is a full 10 points less  than Max, who’s relatively in a group with  Woolen, Rogers, and Gonzalez. Not a knock against Max, just an acknowledgement that McDuffie is really playing well in LA.

Mad Max was my 1st choice leading up to the draft, because he just seemed to have a very high ceiling, and adds the explosive athleticism that we haven't really had. Deone is his counterpart on the Dline. This second year KY duo, has a chance to flip the narrative about our defense.

We haven't been seeing or hearing much about him, and he is playing, so that is usually a pretty good sign for young corners.

We saw him drop an INT in the end zone right before the Chargers scored their only TD. That's about it. Which is good for a young CB (not dropping INTs, the not hearing about him part)
