MJS Posted October 2 Posted October 2 We haven't been seeing or hearing much about him, and he is playing, so that is usually a pretty good sign for young corners. 12 1 Quote
947 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 He looks to be really good in coverage this year. His tackling is another story... 4 1 Quote
sven233 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 He's been very good in pass coverage overall, but has been pretty awful in run support. As good as he has been in coverage overall, he has been that bad in run support. He just gets blown out of the play too easily. I've seen him be willing to tackle, but he isn't great at it. Teams have run to his side quite a bit knowing it's his weakness, but we are stopping the run OK regardless of how he's been doing at it. But, as hard as it has been for him to compete in the run game, overall, I have few issues with how he has played overall. 1 2 Quote
BigAl2526 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I understand Leonhard is using a lot of blended coverage schemes, one side is man and the other is zone. Hairston has mostly been playing zone. 2 Quote
Low Positive Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I'm not sure that these stats are meaningful after 3 games. Benford has been targeted 21 times while Hairston has only been targeted 11 times. Is that because Hairston is better in coverage, or because Benford is covering the other team's primary WR option? 3 1 1 Quote

GunnerBill Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Really well. He has been out best DB through 3 weeks. 6 2 Quote

billsfan89 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 He's been mostly good, I think he's not been beaten much in coverage when the back 7 has been properly organized. The first week against the Texans the defense was a chaotic mess, week 2 against the Lions things were better but still somewhat sloppy, week 3 against the Chargers things looked tighter overall. When Hairston has been in place he has been very good. So if he can just become a moderately better tackler there's a very good ceiling on him, another feather in the cap of the 2025 draft class! Having an excellent cover corner who is suspect in run defense is an acceptable trade off for me. As long as he can match the stride of the speedy receivers we face (something none of our other corners can do. It has been a hole on this team for a long time). 2 2 Quote

Probably made a couple more noticeable plays, but he has been a step late a fair few times as well in coverage. I think CJGJ has had the best single game of our DBs last week, but for consistency down in and down out over the 3 games Max has been the most consistent. 1 1 Quote
Lost Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Why in the world did the Chiefs let McDuffie go? Did he lack a criminal record? 1 10 Quote
Low Positive Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I'm watching the play when he should have had the INT in the first quarter on the Chargers first drive. @BigAl2526 is right about blended coverages. The Bills have Benford in man coverage on Johnston, but the rest of the DBs are playing zone. Hairston picks up WR Tre Harris at the snap, but knows he has help over the middle from the safety. He recognizes the FB Alex Ingold streaking out of the backfield towards the corner of the EZ. He slides over to cover him and almost has the pick. Good recognition, because if he stays with his man it's a walk-in TD. That was McDaniel's play design. Herbert never even looks at anyone but Ingold. 2 Quote

I do think it was a mistake but I would guess their rationale was: - 2025 was definitely his weakest year as a Chief. Highest completion percentage given up - at nearly 70% compared to the 23% he is giving up so far this year; - he was coming off a knee injury that had him on IR at the end of the year. The Chiefs never quite said what it was before they traded him which makes me think there is a chance they think it is degenerative and were keen to max out at the top of his value; - Spags played less nickel in 2025 and McDuffie is at his best when you can move him about inside and out and use him as a match up weapon. Personally I think when you use him that way he is elite. When you just stand him on an island outside, he is good but he is not a $30m corner used that way and that is the money they wanted. I imagine combination of those factors and the attractiveness of the Rams offer - a 1st last year, a 3rd in this excellent upcoming 2027 draft and a couple of late rounders.... I understand the thinking even if I disagree with the conclusion. 4 1 Quote
Alphadawg7 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 (edited) Its funny how much people complain about Maxwell in games then suddenly think he is doing great when a stat like this comes out lol. Ive been defending him the first 3 weeks for the most part when people get mad any time he gives up a catch, which has been the 2nd fewest times in the NFL lol. Benford has had a rougher go, but he also has been covering Nico Collins and St. Brown the first 2 weeks before he got hurt who are 2 of the most difficult covers in the NFL right now - and doing so in a new system, with 6 new starters around him. So I think he has gotten a bit too much flak even though he has had his moments of struggle early this year for sure. 2 minutes ago, GunnerBill said: I do think it was a mistake but I would guess their rationale was: - 2025 was definitely his weakest year as a Chief. Even the big catch he gave up to Tre Harris wasn't as bad as it looked live. Everything about the structure of the play tells you the ball is going left. Benford got fooled by a tricky design, he wasn't routed up. Hopefully the toe injury isn't long term. He is still our best island corner when healthy, it is just an adjustment to a more challenging role. 1 3 Quote
