If Dallas can afford the contract we certainly can Talked about this in another thread - but we were never going to do this. In the last year and a half, we've signed Christian Benford to a big extension, spent a 1st Round Pick on Maxwell Hairston, and *still* spent a 2nd Round Pick on Davison Igbinosun. As it is, we've put premium assets into a Cornerback that isn't going to see the field much unless there's an injury. Which is why a lot of people were perplexed by the Drafting of Igbinosun. Now Benford has gone down for a little while and it looks genius. The situation we're in is the very reason he Drafted IGB. Making a move for a FOURTH Boundary Cornerback would make it so that if everyone was healthy, one of Benford of Hairston is demoted to IGB's role of off the bench injury insurance that doesn't see the field much. And it would move IGB to a healthy scratch that wouldn't see the field *at all* unless someone got hurt and wouldn't see meaningful reps unless there were TWO injuries. Both of those scenarios are insane for the assets and cap space you're already dedicating to the position. You would be throwing away IGB's development after spending a 2nd Round Pick on him. And he has the talent to possibly be a stud starter. Because of these things, you would essentially be saying one of Benford, Hairston, or IGB would be traded after this season. Benford's contract has massive cap ramifications until after June 1st of next season. And again, Hairston and IGB could be a stud starting pair for years to come. On top of all of that, you wouldn't just be giving up more than a 6th next year and a 2nd the year after for Porter - you'd also have to sign him to another massive contract for a Cornerback. Which would make things like re-signing Dalton Kincaid and Deone Walker even harder than it already will be. Or you'd be paying those picks for a guy you'd only have for this season. Which would be just as insane to do. All of this for an injury to Benford that isn't season ending. Doesn't make sense for us anyway you slice it. 3 1 Quote

I always look at it like - you either spend money or draft capital on a position. Benford is not in the top tier of pay for corners, and then 2 high draft picks. When it comes time to pay one of the corners, you will likely no longer have benford and you probably have already spent more draft capital 1 Quote

Porter being due a massive extension on top of the Bills extensions for Groot, Benford, Bernard, Torrence, Shakir and Cook kicking in or soon to be kicking in along with next off-season staring down Kincaid and Cole's possible extensions (and Dorian Williams is hitting free agency too) is just a lot to tack on a massive extension for a corner on top of the draft capital which while not massive isn't insignificant either. 1 Quote

BuffaloBillyG Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I'm gonna assume that Jerry Jones is gonna Jerry Jones and NOT sign Porter after this year. A 2nd and a 6th for a one year rental is bad business. 1 Quote
abranovi Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I would’ve made that trade, gotta go all in sometime and this seems like the year cowboys aren’t giving him a contract yet… and with the situation of our CBs… why not 1 1 Quote

And what CB situation are you referring to? A toe injury to Benford? This very situation is why we spent a 2nd Round Pick on a Cornerback this year, even though we had two entrenched starters in Benford and Hairston. 1 Quote

The guy grew up around the Steelers organization when his father played and later coached in Pittsburgh. Then he couldn't back down because he was so public about it and the Steelers were public about where they stood. Now with the trade, he can back down without losing face. It's all about ego with these guys. One thing you have to credit Beane with is that he doesn't let things escalate like this. This is exactly where the James Cook situation was headed, but he always gave Jimbo an out. Jimbo was using his brother to throw out the ultimatums, and Beane just ignored him. The one time I think Beane lost control of a situation was with Diggs. It never should have gotten to that point. 1 Quote
