Its gotten to the point where I am losing interest in watching games.   Roughing the passer and pass interference feel more like a way for the league to influence the outcomes of games than they do actual penalties at this point.

It seems really shady, and when you add in rule changes like not letting teams attempt surprise onsides kicks and the league being completely in bed with online gambling, it's hard not to put the tinfoil hat on.

It's inconsistent because everyone sees things differently and because of that it will always be a matter of question.

Apparently, we now have multiple replay avenues in the NFL. It is inexcusable when a play demonstrates, to the letter, the rule and it still isn’t called correctly.
Repeating myself but we used to get minutes of replays showing g every conceivable angle, sometimes zoomed in, usually frame by frame of disputed calls, until the refs called it.
Now we go to commercial and comeback to the call already having been made, no explanation and the teams are lined up and ready to snap the ball.
If it looks like BS, and smells like BS……?

The point of replay is to take subjectivity out of it ( as much as possible) It hasn’t and that points to chicanery. Add in the sports betting filth that the league is in bed with…..? 🤷‍♂️

They need to get rid of video review.  It hasn’t fixed anything,  just look at the Lions fumble and backwards pass which the nfl called incomplete.  Or the Brandon cookie catch.  Or the five first downs we got v the chiefs.

why have video and then make an obvious wrong call ??

all that does is allow the league to rig the games, or make them feel rigged.

human error at the speed of the nfl is acceptable.  Slow motion replay and still making a wrong call is not.

Brandon cookie catch.

Dual possession, on the ground, McMillan’s knees on the ground = down by contact, offensive players ball. End of story, not possible to call it any other way.
That isn’t subjective. That is the rule we have had for half a century at least.

For as long as I've been alive I remember my dad complaining about NFL officiating, hell my dad is convinced Super Bowl 4 was rigged. Since I've been a fan (2000) I've constantly seen fans complaining about officiating. I've never seen fans ever say an era of officiating was good. That's not to say there aren't legitimate critiques of officiating and rules, there will always be that. But I just hate fans acting like there was ever a time when officiating was good but now it is so horrible that they want to stop watching.

Fans get older.  When I was 18 watching the NFL I had less to do, and less money to spend.    Whether its better or worse than it was 20 years ago really isnt my concern.   My concern is whether its so bad now that I'd rather spend my time and money on something else.   I love football.   But, the older I get the more convinced I am that the league gives its fans a handful of horse crap and expects fans to believe its gold.

Exactly.  And replay didn’t even look at it.  Then the nfl had to make up some lie about the call.

bad look for the nfl.

just live with the refs on the field.  It would appear less rigged that way

The PF on Rousseau for a straight up form tackle on the QB but no PF when Josh takes a knee and gets run over...  makes you think some individual officials have their own agenda.

If the ball goes backwards, how can it be a forward pass?

The ball goes based on the physics of how you got hit.  A back side hit sends the ball forward or the direction the player was going and where the arm was

You should update this thread to include defensive pass interference.

I watched hours of football yesterday and saw 4 DPI penalties awarded across the league when the receiver clearly exaggerated a foul by throwing his hands up in the air and crumpling his legs to sell it.

We've seen this with QBs trying to sell a late hit, but yesterday is the first time i can recall seeing this many WRs starting to "flail and flop".  The NFL needs to go over this trend with refs because it's a copycat league and this will fester and get worse each week. It's a bad look and changes games at the end.

Find the clips….

Folllow the money. Sports betting is the reason it's getting worse and will continue. Betting in general will contribute to the downfall of humanity. You can place a bet on anything now. Want to bet on how many bowel movements Tom Brady takes in a month, some one will take it.

Not wanting to watch because you have other ways to spend your time/money is fine. What I hate is fans acting like officiating was ever any better or worse than it is now. I just laugh when fans say officiating 10 years ago was so all that better, like you were complaining then and you were complaining 20 years ago how horrible things were too and if you were old enough you were complaining about it 30-50 years ago if not longer. There's never been a time when fans agreed officiating was good. You complained then as much as you do now.

I'm perfectly fine with criticisms of the NFL product I have plenty of my own (international games, high quality grass fields should be mandated for every new stadium, Thursday Night Football should be abolished as should any non Sunday/Monday games that aren't the season opener, Thanksgiving, and Saturday games in December). I just don't think officiating is the real driver of the issues that's causing the issues in the current NFL product. With replay assist for obvious misses, coaches challenges, and every turnover and TD reviewed along with virtual measurements the NFL officiating is probably as accurate as it has ever been. There are rule issues like the over protection of QB's and such but those have always existed.

Overall, the league's issues to me stem more so from business decisions and not officiating, the officiating is about as good as it has ever been.

The officiating is bad. It’s bad because we have the technology and ability to make it better. It’s incredibly inconsistent and we can all see when a mistake is made. It starts with consistency. There’s no reason that the Goff play and Shough play should have been different. I don’t care about “the ruling on the field” either. That’s nonsense. Whatever is “right” is what needs to be the call at all times.

I’d like to see teams have 5 challenges per game and every time you are right, you get to keep that one. Basically, you’re never deciding “should I throw the flag here.” You’d have to make the system much faster than some old guy running to the sideline to look at an iPad. You should be able to challenge everything from a false start, to a first down, to a catch or whatever. The goal should be, “we need to increase consistency and get it right more often than we currently are. Even if that slows the game down a little that’s better than costing a team a game on the wrong call like WMU - Michigan.”

I am not one that usually complains about the refs even in games the Bills lose, but that DPI against the Rams that negated a fantastic game clinching INT, was just horrible.  On something so clear & obvious, “replay assist” needs to be allowed to overturn it. If not, just get rid of replay completely.

The Rams got screwed out of a W.

That is certainly a problem, has been for a long time and also something that is making me watch less football overthe years, but that is more procedural and less systemic, imo.

I think the biggest problem is simply that the game is badly over-officiated and these guys are throwing waaaay too many flags. I don't turn my TV on on Sundays to watch zebras every 90 seconds; it's going to lead to me bailing on the NFL when Allen hangs them up.

This bull**** where guys are throwing flags every time they see an "indicator" is destroying the viewing experience, imo.

If you don't see an actual penalty being committed then don't even consider reaching for your flag. If you miss a couple calls because a guy was crafty and got away with something, too f'ing bad. You're there to keep the game flowing and to prevent problems, not to create them by thinking you can catch every penalty in every game by throwing flags at everything that might have been a hold.

Bill Vinovich and his crew are consistently one of the worst in the league and last night they showed why.

The league not replacing terrible officials does seem a bit shady. Last night it sure felt like they were doing their best to get a certain result. I felt dirty after that game ended.

I agree the "rule official" in that clip explained how, I think it is absurd but he said that was the rule.  It is alsmo as absurd as the Tuck Rule which was invented on the spot to help the Pats to launch the epic dynasty.
