zow2 Posted September 28 Posted September 28 You should update this thread to include defensive pass interference.  I watched hours of football yesterday and saw 4 DPI penalties awarded across the league when the receiver clearly exaggerated a foul by throwing his hands up in the air and crumpling his legs to sell it.   We've seen this with QBs trying to sell a late hit, but yesterday is the first time i can recall seeing this many WRs starting to "flail and flop". The NFL needs to go over this trend with refs because it's a copycat league and this will fester and get worse each week. It's a bad look and changes games at the end. 3 3 Quote
DrDawkinstein Posted September 28 Posted September 28 I'd say it's pretty consistent... Jalan81 Posted September 28 Posted September 28 If you watched the end of the Rams Broncos you would have seen highway robbery. The refs made call after call till the Broncos scored.  Called what was an offensive PI as defensive PI and took away the game saving interception. It was brutal, then ignored two holding calls to allow the winning touchdown to be scored. 3 1 9 1 2 Quote

The Jokeman Posted September 28 Posted September 28 It's inconsistent because everyone sees things differently and because of that it will always be a matter of question. 1 3 1 Quote

So, now as long as a QB brings his arm up to throw it and gets hit and fumbles, it's incomplete no matter if the arm came forward or not? Since when? 1 Quote

But the officials during the game get ONE vantage point, at full speed, with the element of not knowing exactly where to look as what's going to be the key thing in that play. All while trying hard not to get swiped out by 22 players flying around at super human speed. It's like going to stand in the middle expressway at rush hour and then having to recite all the license plates you saw. That's why I will rarely criticize the refs on the field.  Now, I will say there are a lot of times where the eye in the sky could help things out and doesn't. The guys in the booth get frame by frame and super slow motion from many different angles. And most times there is time between the plays to have a booth operator review the play in between without slowing the game. 3 Quote
Billsfanatic8989 Posted September 28 Posted September 28 (edited) How long until an official makes a terrible call late in the Super Bowl and costs a team the game? It's definitely coming.  We already had a screw job in the NFC title game several years back.   Edited September 28 by Billsfanatic8989 Quote

thenorthremembers Posted September 28 Posted September 28 Its gotten to the point where I am losing interest in watching games.  Roughing the passer and pass interference feel more like a way for the league to influence the outcomes of games than they do actual penalties at this point.  2 5 Quote
BuffaloBud Posted September 28 Posted September 28 The same can be said for strike zone in baseball and hockey in general. Never the same way. Quote

Yeah, I think they have to walk a fine line between using technology and potentially slowing down the game. I get it.  What they need to do is have some veil of transparency. One of the summer leagues (CFL I believe) had it so why a play was reviewed, instead of bringing in an old retired ref to explain and dictate what they were looking for, actually cut to the review booth and we could hear them communicate with the ref down on the field. What they saw. What their interpretation was. It was enlightening.  And every game should have a replay official on site. Not some random guy "in New York" that buzzes in periodically that is trying to keep tabs on 7-8 games at once.  Like I said above, being an on field ref is extremely tough. I don't really think for a second that they are placing bets and swaying the game on purpose.Your eyes won't see everything. But the technology is there. It's stupid not to use it when you have billions of dollars on the line. Quote

billsfan89 Posted September 28 Posted September 28 For as long as I've been alive I remember my dad complaining about NFL officiating, hell my dad is convinced Super Bowl 4 was rigged. Since I've been a fan (2000) I've constantly seen fans complaining about officiating. I've never seen fans ever say an era of officiating was good. That's not to say there aren't legitimate critiques of officiating and rules, there will always be that. But I just hate fans acting like there was ever a time when officiating was good but now it is so horrible that they want to stop watching. 2 Quote
