Brutal clock management. They only had one timeout and had to have a Field Goal AND a touchdown. You have to use the 2 minute warning to your advantage there. Crazy to me that these coaches make all this money and can't understand simple clock management. Yep. What you certainly CAN'T do under any circumstances is continue playing for the Touchdown there and THEN kick a FG on 4th down. Let's say they go for it on 4th down and score a touchdown and get the two pointer: 1:56 remaining, one time out. At that stage you kick off normally out of the endzone preserving time. Bills run on first down, 6 seconds, time out. 1:50 remaining, 0 time outs. Bills run on second down, 40 seconds, snapped it at :01, 6 seconds a play.... 1:05 remaining, 0 time outs. Bills run on 3rd down, you stop them (I mean the reality is they didn't get a stop so maybe all moot) and they punt.... Bills probably take a timeout with :01 on the play clock then punt. About 00:20 remaining, 0 time outs. Slim chance to get a FG but still a chance without needing to go onside kick - if you can get one chunk play and get out bounds you might have a shot. I agree with you he should have gone FG the second the Chargers were in range. But once he hadn't he HAD to be in 4 down football mode. The route he went - letting the 2 minute warning pass and then still kicking was the lowest win % of the lot. It was total idiocy. 1 Quote

Yes, the D did what they had to do when they had to do it and I give them full credit for that, but the Chargers offense also crapped the bed against the Cards and Raiders to start the season. Going into this season, I and others thought it would be six to eight games before Leonhard figured out what he had and our guys had a full grasp of the new system and yesterday notwithstanding, I am not convinced we are a good defense at this juncture. Regardless of how inept the Chargers offense is, holding them to 10 points off of 5 turnovers is an accomplishment. 29 minutes ago, Simon said: They seem to be getting better each week, but we know this is not going to be a linear process. While I am encouraged by the progress, I'd also hesitate to start calling them "good" already. I'm looking at this season as "can they be adequate". I don't care what their ranking is, I don't care what they look like half the time, but can they make the high leverage stop 1-2 more times a game than they could under McD, which would ultimately make the difference in their season. It's up to the offense to put up enough points so that the rest doesn't matter. 1 Quote

But it’s not lost on me that they did it against perhaps the most inept offense in the league currently. Our front has been stellar, but the back end of the defense still looks confused much of the time. It’s a work in progress for Leonhard and they have some very tough matchups coming up soon. I hope I can pronounce them good after those games. The potential is certainly there. Quote
