The Hall of Fame was turning into the Hall over Very Good players,, they were inducting too many people each year and eliminating the senior players will really cut back.  You should either get in a reasonable amount to time or you dont.

I dont know why Belichek's first ballot failure should have any impact on the format at all.

As far as Tasker goes, how many so clever Bill fans are going to chime in about how he wasnt that good and/or what a terrible broadcaster he is.  I think the Tasker hate he (for lack of a better word) is wildly overdone.

These changes don’t end Tasker’s eligibility, but he is always gonna be a long shot, regardless. If the coaches’ old trope of special teams being one third of the game actually meant anything, Tasker would already be in. IMO, if a punter, three place kickers, and a return specialist can be inducted, then Tasker is certainly worth serious consideration.

Tasker belongs for one very good reason: he put special teams on the map. Before him, special teams was just a bunch of backups running after the ball. Tasker elevated special teams into it's own distinct element of the game. Today teams add players because of their skills being a gunner, etc. That's all because of Steve Tasker.

I've thought this for years. The HOF should be for the guys who changed the game, the guys where you can't tell the history of the NFL without bringing up their stories. So many good-not-legendary players going in now.

I'm reminded of Phil Leotardo's line from the final season of Sopranos. "This thing either has meaning or it has no meaning".

While he may never be enshrined in Canton, Tasker remains eligible for the hall of Silly Cabbie Hats. Also the Hall of Regrettably Phallic Photos.

All of us Bills fans, old enough to remember him anyway, loved Steve Tasker the football player. He was a great ST's player for years and even had some timely catches every now and again. Still, I have never been one to bang the drum saying he deserved to be in the HOF. If he would have gotten in, cool. The fact he likely will never get in now is fine as well.

Yeah ultimately it doesn’t matter. He was great, no two ways about it and the fact that teams had to game plan so hard for him says it all.

It will be really interesting to see how the HOF treats someone like Slater from NE. He was a core special teamer for 16 years, 3 super bowls and seen as the greatest gunner of all time. If he gets in, then Tasker's argument gets stronger.

This is pretty much how I feel. If there were other special teamers in there (not kickers, punters and returners) I’d feel stronger. If one guy is to go in for that role it should be Tasker IMO. If none are in there than I’m fine with that too. I believe Tasker is the greatest to ever do what he did. People say Patrick Mannelly is the greatest long snapper ever (at least according to AI). He’s not in either.  Not every job is the same in terms of importance.

I don’t think he can go in unless Tasker is in.

At least he doesn't look as silly as Lil' Joe Burrow smoking that.

I think it may be the opposite...

Slater is seen as the best gunner of all time. I think anyone who is considered best at *any* position ever should be in the hall of fame. 2 first team all pro's is pretty crazy

I get where the naysayers are coming from. But the dude was running down the field and tackling the returner for little or no gain what seemed like every kick for a decade.  It was ridiculous.

I think what kind of works against ST guys is the fact there is a small group of guys like Tasker, Slater in NE etc.. who were guys to game plan for and probably deserve a place in the HOF. If you had a larger pool of guys doing what they did it would elevate the entire spot where it probably is noticed more which in turn creates more attention that "oh crap this guy was great and deserves to get in".

See he's not even close the Tasker that's why I think it's funny

He's getting the belichick push but Tasker was much better so he should be in first..

Tasker has like 5 all pros.. slater can't hold a candle to Steves stats.. I think Steve has the most forced fumbles in NFL history on special teams... 204 special teams tackles and 7 blocked punts

7 time pro bowler and pro bowl MVP too

Slater has ZERO FORCED FUMBLES... Only 1 punt block

Sure he has 10 pro bowls but his statistics don't match up to Steve.. and Steve has 5 or 10 receiving touchdowns was a more versatile player

Apparently even Slater has said that Tasker should go in before him as the “pioneer” of the role.

I've always been of the opinion that Special Teamers getting into the hall of fame would be comparable to someone like Manny Mota who was the best pinch hitter off all time in Baseball but mostly a bench player getting in the all of fame so I am generally not for it.  With that being said, Tasker certainly warrants more consideration than Matthew Slater should and if Devin Hester can get in, that strengthens the case for both.

Right on, 716! I've lived in Boston for 40 years and followed Slater's entire career. Don't get me wrong: he was a terrific gunner -- but Steve Tasker was a WAY better special teams player overall, a much bigger threat. Teams devised blocking schemes to contain Slater on kick returns, but they had to GAME-plan to deal with Steve. Steve had seven forced fumbles and SEVEN blocked punts in his career, huge game-changing plays. He even had more career tackles than Slater, yet played three fewer seasons. Slater was super consistent and had the recognition and good fortune of playing on Super Bowl winners, but he was never a game changer like Steve, HOF aside.
