Dion Dawkins on Myles Garrett's Iron Sharpens Iron Show.

Several interesting discussions despite the usual mutual a** kissing. I suppose for Dion to be on that show, it's a big compliment. 

 

Look up close, Garrett is a specimen, give you the vibes of a prime time Bruce Smith.

 

Didn't realize Dawkins's calf muscle is almost the size of a football. Watching a 350lb man do high box jump is crazy.

Saw this, today.    Dion’s athleticism was almost shocking.    I mean, he’s certainly a world class athlete to play left tackle in the NFL, but watching his strength and movement in the context of Garrett was surprising.   As the OP says, his box jump amazed me.

If Dion was the LT for Brady he would be a borderline Hall of famer because his accolades would be increased

 

He's about to be a six-time pro bowler... Had to work into being part of the club.. he wasn't one of the guys right away 

 

If I had to guess retires with two more pro bowls.. in a league with a bunch of stud left tackles getting a first team All pro is tough

 

Retiring a seven-time pro bowler will certainly put you on the ballot one day probably tho or at least in the conversation for the 120 players who get voted down 

 

Brady elevated the status of lineman though so I think he would have an all pro if he was Brady's blind side and his brilliance would be more talked about

 

People think Josh Allen runs away from pressure which hurts our left tackle.. they think he's masked by Josh's athleticism... Brady Masked tackles by his release but that wasn't held against them

Glad he was able to sit down with a specimen like Garrett and together debunk the "fat slob" myth.

 

Dion is so, so much better than most of this board wants to give him credit for. He will not be easily replaceable, and he will be missed, when he decides to hang em up.

I've never seen an athlete his size move like him

 

His calfs are so freaking big and he can jump and he's agile... Anchor against a bull rush 

 

He's been our most steady player outside of Josh Allen for the last nine seasons.. consistently improving even when he had his starting job locked up 

 

The one thing he wasn't lying about is when he said he wasn't done getting better

 

Other guys came into the league better years one two three..  but Dawkins kept working and improving... Didn't peek at 27.. and became a stalwart

I share the same opinion.   The Bills are the 2nd best franchise of the last decade.  They've had very few good to great players at the most important positions on a roster.   I think Dion gets a lot of crap for not looking like Tyron Smith or Joe Thomas.    The issue with him getting a Hall of Fame nod is that only 48 lineman have made the Hall in the 104 year history of the league.  Thats a big stretch.     At the very least he needs to be considered on of the best Bills players of all time.   

 

As an aside, I am roughly the same size as Dion.   That box jump was insane for a guy that size.  I cant even begin to imagine trying that.

Well that's why I said he would be borderline if he was Tom Brady's guy.. because that one all pro might throw him over the top if he had seven pro bowls

 

He adds two more pro bowls he probably will have a higher AV than a lineman in the Hall of Fame... He's obviously not Jason Peters level but 2 more pro bowls will probably put him at dan dierdorf av.. above Jimbo covert another HoF and Jackie slater

They need to win a Super Bowl and he needs at least one All Pro.    If they/he can do those two things before he retires he will be a shoe in.    If they dont he is still a top five Buffalo Bills Offensive Lineman all time.  Pretty good for a 2nd round pick out of Temple who almost everyone thought needed to play Guard.

Dude, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Pro Bowl selections have been meaningless for about a decade now. Certainly for the entirety of his career.

That's not the point 

 

I just said if he was a top 20 pick he would have been a part of the club.. that's a massive thing in the NFL All pro 

 

It's a club that you're either a part of or you really have to work hard to become a part of.. and for lineman being taken in the top 25 picks gives you access to the club easier...  Josh has never been a first team All pro because he wasn't a part of the club.. like he had to fight to earn his respect he was not one of the guys... he was the guy nobody respected and he had to ball out for so long until nobody could say anything anymore

 

that shows you how good Jason Peters was cuz he was not part of the club either

 

I said if he was Brady's left tackle he would have one or two all pros which would have put him over the hump 

 

66% of the pro bowl voting is still players and coaches.. there's a massive difference between first pro bowl and 4th alternate.. even today 

 

He's made the real team four times was only an alternate once.. I said he's underrated.. I said he would have one or two all pros next to those pro bowls if he was Tom Brady's left tackle 

 

He had the highest pass block win rate in the NFL last year for all tackles according to advanced metrics.. passes the eye test.. world class technique.. realistically if I'm being objective his struggles have been much more as a run blocker than they have as a pass blocker the last 3 years

 

But you pay your left tackle the pass block at the end of the day

 

He takes on the toughest matchups... Yeah if he was Tom Brady's left tackle i think he'd have at least one all pro

In general I agree with this, but I do believe that there’s some merit to lineman breaking through to the probowl. Most fans who vote aren’t very nuanced with regards to oline play — responsibilities, technique, etc — so they vote for the names they know. That means if you’ve been there  before or have a high Madden rating you’re in. To begin your career where Dion did adds some clout. Even the fantasy football crowd that watches multiple games a week usually doesn’t recognize good oline play until a Romo, Nance, Brady, etc points it out during a broadcast.

Thankfully going forward, a Pro Bowl nomination will go back to meaning something. There’s no game, it’s just a true accolade, and there will be a cap of 88 of them each year.

 

Getting back to the thread…Dion is awesome. Great person, great player, amazing athlete. He’s another guy who deserves a ring.

I saw the same kind of hate towards Stevie Johnson. Some people don’t like athletes who are outspoken for whatever reason. Or at least that’s what I’ve noticed. 
 

Anyone who appreciates line play knows Dawkins is the definition of consistent and a very well-rounded LT. Blocked for the rushing champion last year and has done a good job of keeping Josh upright for the most part. He is the longest tenured Bill for a reason other than Reid Ferguson.

Dude! I saw a clip of Myles doing the sitting box jump on Twitter last week, dunno if its from this specific episode, but it was insane. It literally looked like levitation, or a movie special effect you'd see in like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" LOL!!!

 

Makes me want to see Anthony Edwards do it!!

Feels like a relevant question.... around the 2m 10sec mark of that video, Dion's saying 'everybody calls us fatboys, they need to lose weight, but we have a plan... every year theyre like "youre going to play between this (weight) and this" '

 

Got me thinking.... I know he lost 25-30lbs. Obv at minimum, he got the Bills blessing to do this, 0 chance he couldve done this without it.... but I wonder who it came from?  Did he want to lose 30#'s and they signed off on it... or was it the teams idea, and he went out and did it???

 

Then I'd love to hear the why? He had a down year, but most did, even though a down year was still pretty damn good.  He also had a concusion that Im sure didn't help... Wonder if it was a longevity decision, or a change in OL Coordinator, and them planning more pulling and movement up front, or what???
