Kyler Gordon... Brandon Aiyuk Part Deux?

Bears General Manager Ryan Poles was asked today if Gordon will play this season. Poles answered, “I don’t know.”

“I would hope so,” Poles continued. “I still have hope there. He’s going to have to continue to work hard and come back to play football again.”

Poles emphasized the need for Gordon, who was out all summer with a calf injury, to push through the discomfort of rehabilitation.

“Any time you have an injury and you’re coming back from something, there’s discomfort that you have to push through. And that’s what it comes down to. So we haven’t been able to get over that hump and we’re not progressing as fast as we would like. That’s really all I have to say about that,” Poles said."

 

The Bears signed Gordon to a three-year, $40 million contract extension last year, and Gordon played in just three games last season as he struggled with groin, hamstring and calf injuries. Those might prove to be the only three games Gordon ever plays in a Bears uniform.

Yesterday's Update on Brandon Aiyuk:

 

Aiyuk was due a $24.935 million option bonus on Sept. 1, part of the contract extension he signed with the 49ers before the 2024 season. Lynch confirmed the 49ers do not owe Aiyuk any money because he defaulted on his contract, which wiped out $27 million in guaranteed money and eliminated the option bonus.

 

Aiyuk, whom the 49ers placed on the reserve/left squad list on Dec. 13, must apply for reinstatement and has shown no inclination to do so.

“I will not be reinstating with them or ever doing any kind of business with them,” Aiyuk said in a social media post in July. “I’m locked in and focused on my opportunity to return to the field this season.”

I felt Gordon was the CB the Bills were eyeing in the Elam draft. We passed and he went to the Bears a few picks later in Round 2. He's been a good nickel CB hence his large extension. Now the injury comes up and be interesting to see what happens.

If I recall the talk was that KC took the CB that the Bills wanted & some people felt the Bills panicked & took Elam.

The only 3 games he ever plays a Bears uniform? What about the other 42?

 

Does it mean the only 3 post extension? 

 

I tend to side with the player in these situations. Sure Aiyuk was more complicated but a GM just telling a player "you're fine, play hurt" isn't a great look.

Poles is obviously frustrated and I think he's doing the Parcells thing of trying to pressure the player. Poles must think that Gordon is malingering.

 

It isn't a great look but clearly Poles has run out of patience. I imagine some fans have too. I wonder how it's playing amongst his teammates.

I am sure some fans have. But they are even more irrelevant than the GM. Sure, if his teammates really do think he is malingering that is an issue. But they might equally wonder why their GM is publicly outing a teammate who is hurt.

Sounds to me like Beane made a good choice to pass on him at least Elam tried to play when given the chance this guy seems to want to get something for nothing or be one that now he has the money doesn't want to go to work to earn it anymore .

The GM and coach have been expressing frustration about Gordon for like a year now.

Maybe the GM and Coach should put a little frustration on themselves for giving a guy who never played a full season an extension.

In fairness he's getting his info from another department, and they obviously dont believe the extent of his injury.  I dunno the kids track record otherwise, but strange comment if everything else has been normal around Gordon.  Strange, but we saw this with the Jets and a OL's back & team physician not seeing the injury on imaging, that was clearly there, to other Doctors. He sued and I believe won.... but my memories cloudy, and could def be wrong on something

Not saying you said this. But "panic" has always been an absolutely ridiculous way to refer to this. You're right, a lot of  people say it. But it's dumb.

 

It's not possible that they didn't know that it was at least a possibilty that somebody would pick McDuffie. That is literally not a possibility. They had plans in place.

 

Panic was not the problem.

 

A backup plan which has proved to be a very poor choice? Yeah, very much so. A sudden panic? Nah.

I'm with you on this. He says Gordon is at least working with the team doctors on this, though it sounds like they think he might also be getting other advice.

 

Why go public?

Didn't we have some similar talk back and forth on here about Tre when he was coming back from his ACL tear? About how he supposedly wasn't pushing through his rehab and might not play for us again? 

 

Gordon just has to get to the point where he actually trusts his body. The NFL is a business. He has to do what's best for him long term. I don't think he's played his last game for the Bears, but this would not be the first time a player has had an irreparable situation unfold because of team doctors and management. Anyone remember the Trent Williams situation in Washington?

IMO, no player should put 100% faith in a team doctor. Team doctors work for management, not labor, I hope Gordon has his own medical representation as it were.
