Vince Young Documentary on Netflix

Let me guess:

 

An overconfident guy whose skillset was a poor fit for the NFL (especially at that time) who didn't think he had to do much work and could simply rely on his natural athletic talents like he had his whole life through Pop Warner, HS and college and especially after he won a National Championship and was a #1 overall pick in the draft.

 

I'm guessing that's 95% accurate and is the story they tell without reading any of the posts in this thread or watching it?

Watched this weekend. Agree that Fisher is a massive petty prick. He’d certainly be getting votes in the other thread polling most overrated HC if it was posted during his time in the league.

 

That said, Young also still didn’t seem to want to take full responsibility either for the way he let his career bottom out. He did say he took responsibility overall but when speaking about specific events in the story it always seemed to be someone else’s fault. Seems like he at least married well. His wife comes across as smart, sweet and loyal.

 

And yes, totally forgot he was on the Bills for a minute. When they showed him in our helmet I did a double take!

Always thought of Fisher as a 'kinder, gentler' Gregg Williams.  Not sure where they all fit into my rankings of biggest NFL coaching clowns.  Can't forget the Ryan boys, Sullen Doug, or Nate Hackett. 🤨

It was an "oh yeah" moment. I remember it was the year we had Shawn Merriman because my username started from a joke article that the Bills were Whitewalkers and it mentioned both players so it had to be 2012

Vince Young seemed to be a player that needed a pat on the back, but all he got from Fisher were kicks in the butt.

 

Sad that Young seemed to have all the physical tools and intelligence to be great, but if you look into his family history and his behavior in his early days at Texas, any decent GM should've been able to spot the red flags that would lead you to believe he wouldn't be able to cut it on the Pro level.

 

 

decent level of intelligence. ...   Didn't Vince Young score a 6 on the old Wonderlic test?      Also,  I recall that Vince Young failed to catch on to the fact that you actually have to follow a playbook to succeed in the NFL rather than winging it and thats why he flamed out.

Because he beat one of the most stacked rosters of all time in the nation championship that included multiple Heisman winners including one of the greatest college players of all time Reggie Bush as a 7 point underdog in an absolute thriller and perhaps one of the greatest NCAA championships ever? 
 

People act like players are failures if they bust in the NFL. Vince Young was an electric player and had an incredible career as Longhorn. He has PLENTY to be proud of and is a legend in Texas and the sport of American football in general.

Watched it and thought Jeff Fisher came across as a real assman.  As Jimmy Johnson use to say. "you treat all your players the same; different". 

 

Vince Young was a great talent, but did not have the headspace to thrive under Fisher.  Wonder what would have happened with another coach.  That being said, he played the victim card throughout the documentary. No offense, but unless you are physically or sexually violated you must get over it.....I know I did.

I saw VY at Hobby Airport in Houston shortly after he was cut from the Bills. I could see his gut from 30 yds away (it was obvious it was him due to the 6’5” dude next to the black Longhorns SUV and the posse). I couldn’t believe he was trying to “revive his career” in that shape.

That was my take too, too much of it was always somebody else's fault.  Why didnt Vince have any success away from Fisher?  Vince was immature and never had the passing skills for the NFL.

VY was coddled and pampered in college until he ran into the d!ck wall that was Jeff Fisher. Jeff certainly came across as a first class a$$ but I don't think VY did himself any favors either. It's hard to feel bad for people who squander soo much opportunity.

 

He was a model citizen in camp for us, and some of ppl thought he'd make the team but it was not meant to be.

Leinhart forgot he was on the Bills, even when he was on the Bills! One of the most unprofessional performances I’ve ever witnessed. Lost a ton of respect for him that day.

I'll say this: if Vince Young was drafted in 2026 instead of 2006 then yes you'd hear a lot of people saying he was "soft" but RPO is a lot better developed at the pro level and I do think there are coaches who could have helped Young keep his head together.

 

 

Jeff Fisher is none of those coaches

 

It's a different era and I'll say for the record that if my boss started calling me after I'd taken a drive to cool my head and ordered me in that night to see a shrink and made sure that everyone knew about it I would be throwing him further than I trusted him ever again
