An entirely new defensive scheme that takes more risks with an aggressive scheme. All this just makes me nervous as hell, thinking that this team sacked a QB who doesn't take many sacks, and yet they sacked him 8 times with two INTs the last time they met in 2025. Will we see "sugar high" Josh to start the game, as that has happened in the past. I'm hoping that the Buffalo Bills come out of this with a win, and just realize that this should be a close, hard-fought game, hence the 1.5 line. Buffalo, please come out healthy! With that win! I dont believe in that. They arent all sitting there punching their lockers because they feel so disrespected by the vegas mafias 1.5 point line. Josh got sacked 8 times in part because our Oline. Dawkins played with a concussion, Brown was injured. Kincaid was out. Our outside receivers bounced between Gabe Davis and Elijah Moore. Plus I don't think Brady came with his best game that day either. Josh also seems to struggle against this team. I don't give two craps about some perceived disrespect. Even if it were true, it doesn't always mean play better. We got people here that dont want to play underdog teams. They dont want to play teams that are coming off a loss. That dont want to play teams that are coming in on a heater. Some uniform combos. It never ends with this stuff. I also think that while "sugar high" Josh is an actual thing, I think it's way overused and overblown. The guy makes one mistake and its OMG SUGAR JOSH AAAAHHHH. Yeah the same "sugar high" Josh that also was falling out of bounds and throwing a lazer 30 yards downfield across his body for a TD. Dont hear crap then. Relax bro. It's one regular season game in week 1. You'll have a heart attack with this schedule finding reasons to lose by week 5. Yes please come out healthy!!! and with a win!! DapperCam Posted September 2 Posted September 2 I think we would have won last year if the team swapped out Dawkins and Brown for their backups. They were completely awful trying to play injured. Allen was running for his life and getting hit a lot. Week 1 games are always really weird, and not necessarily predictive of the rest of the year, so I wouldn't read too much into the result of this one. Hopefully the good guys win big! 3 Quote

My thought is Houston is a young team that's a bit on the arrogant side. I think they remember how their defense dominated last year and are a bit overconfident going in. And Josh is going to smack some reality into them. 8 sacks. Wow. We had a RT playing with one arm and a LT knocked loopy. And where was all that pressure coming from? The OTs being beat. I'm betting that doesn't happen again. I would bet anything and anyone they don't have 8 sacks this time. Let's spin it the other way. Maybe Buffalo will feel disrespected being only a 1.5 point favorite against a team QB'd by CJ Stroud. I know I would. Edited September 2 by BuffaloBillyG 4 1 Quote
Gregg Posted September 2 Posted September 2 When the schedule came out, I had this game as a loss. Houston has been a house of horrors for the Bills, plus that defense is just flat out nasty. With all of the injuries the Texans now have I can see the Bills getting a close win. Something like 20-17 Quote

We will get the O established and our D will make some timely plays. In the end the game will be a 180 degree change from what we had been seeing against Houston. I'm a Bills fan I expect the win and I expect us to make a statement. But like everyone else until we see this team in action for a few games we are just guessing and hoping. It’s been back-to-back heavy defensive drafts, and even 2024 was a balanced draft, with two of the four top picks on defense. The team has also spent heavily to retain defensive players they drafted, including Groot, Benford, and Bernard in recent years, along with Ed Oliver as a longer-term holdover. They also brought in a fairly sizable veteran contract in Chubb this past offseason along with Hoecht, Alford and CJGJ being mid-level acquisitions. So, in my opinion, the defense is primed to take a massive step forward in a new scheme. There’s been a lot of draft capital and a decent amount of cap capital invested in the unit. Interestingly, though, largely because the Benford, Groot, and Bernard deals haven’t fully kicked in yet and so many players are still on rookie contracts, the Bills rank 29th in the league in cap spending on defense which surprised me I thought they would be average or above. 3 1 Quote
Dan Posted September 2 Posted September 2 23 hours ago, Gregg said: This is a team the Bills will be in competition with for the #1 seed. Obviously, it's not a must win since its week 1 but it is important. I would like for the Bills to get the head-to head matchup as well as any tiebreaker scenario that may come up against them. So, a week 1 win is very important this year. I’m not sure I see the Texans competing for the 1 seed, but I do think it’s very likely they’re competing for a playoff spot. If so, then I agree this makes the match up a potential tie-breaker type game. It’s a bit silly to think week 1 has those kinds of ramifications. But, I can’t help by recall last year’s week 1 match up. I could see the Texans having a similar season to the Ravens if we beat them easily. I can imagine they’re entering the season thinking they’re ready to take a big step forward and if they get beat week one, it could derail the whole season for them. Much like last year.. and many times during a season. I think the Bills just have to play smart, fundamentally sound football and get through the 1st quarter in tact. Then do what they do… just steadily keep moving the ball and scoring. It’s the quickest way to demoralize a team that’s playing above their weight class. 22 hours ago, Don Otreply said: I see us sack strip the ball from their QB and run it in for a TD within their first two possessions, I’m just that upbeat about our new defense, and yes I’m always nervous about the first game of the season, 🍸🚬🍸🚬🍸🚬 🤣 I see numerous, numerous posts talking about our improved defense. People are extremely high on a defense that hasn’t played a snap in a real game! I can’t share that confidence. I just hope they don’t crap the bed until they slowly figure it out. IMO, the single biggest question mark is the Bills’ defense… not only for this game but for the entire season. We ALL feel McD’s defense had run its course and was long over due for an over haul… but that doesn't mean the new defense is going to be better or even good. I just can’t have this level of optimism yet. 2 1 Quote

Well, you may as well have that optimism, the alternative is negative vibes, and that’s just no bueno imo, I mean look at the 3rd & 4th down defense we trotted onto the field the last two seasons, it was pathetic, lol, do I have my fingers crossed for the new defense? Yes, yes I do, 🤞🤞 1 1 Quote

I don't get the highly unusual level of overconfidence among some Bills fans here; when I read pregame posts like this over the years, we tend to lose. This game has enormous implications for the home seed in the playoff race and even the division race. All I can do is hope for the best. 2 1 Quote

For as beat up as we were and all those sacks given up, we lost by four with a missed extra point by Prater resulting in a different end game approach. You will see we ran the ball well against that defense, in spite of our two OTs being less than 100% in the game. And the Texans didn’t do much against our crap defense, either. Going into this one fully healthy, I like our chances. Quote

WhitewalkerInPhilly Posted September 2 Posted September 2 I will not root or cheer on injuries after the way the Bills have been snakebitten. But it does seem notable that the Texans have two quality starters and their backup depth on IR for Week 1 Quote

billsfan89 Posted September 2 Posted September 2 Week 1 is such a liar sometimes that I almost prefer coming into the season with a tough game early. If you lose it, you don't have to worry as much because you can make it up over the course of a long regular season, and you can write it off as just Week 1 rust. Whereas if you get a team projected to be "soft," you can have that same Week 1 wonkiness throw off what should be an easier opponent. With this Texans team, on paper you have one of, if not the best, defenses in the league and a quality special teams unit. But their offense is flawed: a lackluster O-line, a thin pass-catcher core that's also banged up (although Collins is a legit table-setter at WR and Schultz is a capable TE), and a lot of mediocrity elsewhere. At RB, they have a nice duo, but nothing particularly dynamic. C.J. Stroud isn't a bad QB, but he's not a particularly dynamic one either. I think it's largely going to come down to whether the offense can avoid turning the ball over and whether the defense can hold the Texans to 17 or fewer points. Quote

I just can’t have this level of optimism yet. There are a number of reasons for MY optimism surrounding the defense: 1 -- reports post-McD firing that Bills' D was easy to predict for offenses 2 -- YOUTH; just look at the long-in-the-tooth defenders gone from last year's team who haven't found other jobs 3 -- Leon Hard (I'm getting used to seeing it that way); the guy has been successful everywhere he's gone, and if you've listened to any of his press conferences he sounds like a HC-in-waiting 4 -- key players sound very enthusiastic when discussing the new scheme (Rousseau, Bernard, Oliver) 5 -- Hoecht, who I consider to be the Bills' Swiss Army Knife on the front 7 6 -- CJGJ; I love bringing some nastiness and edge to this D Do you really think there's even a 50% chance this year's defense will be worse? 1 Quote
