No.

I think Joe is a great guy, but I do not see in him a leader of men. I can not envision him hoisting a Lombardi or outwitting a Belichick-like coach.

This is the coach that would run screen passes on 3rd down and 8, and halfback pitches to Dawson Knox at midfield.

This is just another version of the Davison Igbinosun thread.

No. Preseason is meaningless. I'll let you know around Week 9.

sorry to derail the thread, but yes and no.

i'm much less concerned about the team watching the team this preseason than i was last year.

it had the smell of meddler Wilson and also Levy, always hiring loyal yes men and not a go getter.

"Not a go getter?" Wow, could not disagree more.

Screens on 3rd and 8 were our best play call because we didn't have outside WRs that could convert those downs. That's why the new regime made it their first priority to acquire a legit WR even if they had to "overpay" for the trade. We are not going to see the same offense this year. Same principles yes but different philosophy. All of the reports from training camp and what we've seen in preseason indicate that revitalizing the downfield passing offense was a major focus of the offseason.

What new regime? The guy who picked the players and signed the free agents last year is the same guy who picks the players and signs the free agents now.

I had thought that a new coach and assistant coaches bringing in fresh ideas/perspectives would have made more sense than hiring Brady, but it was not as if there was an available HC candidate with a track record indicating that he would be the missing piece to get us over the Super Bowl hump.

Pretty neutral about Brady at this point, but, as others have noted, Leonhard's ability to field an improved defense will be the most critical thing for the team this season.  Not sure about our defensive personnel being a fit for his defensive scheme and Leonhard has not been a DC at the NFL level, so we probably need to temper our expectations for the defense this season.

It was also the coach who had the Bills #4 in scoring, #1 in rushing and #5 in total DVOA - with a pretty much consensus opinion that we didn't have any playmaking WR's.  We were condensed because we didn't have an outside threat that we wanted Coleman to be or have a healthy Palmer.

In 2024, we were #4 DVOA, 2nd in scoring, became the only offense in NFL history to have 30 passing TD's and 30 rushing TD's - Josh Allen MVP.

Without WR weapons.

His resume is strong.

If Brady wasn't the Bills OC and lets say put up these rankings on another team, I'm pretty sure you would have wanted him.

Some people in this thread saying we wont know anything until January. I disagree. Sure, getting over the hump is the ultimate goal, but there are many things along the way that can be looked at too.

First thing was organizational type things. The training camp and preseason games seemed pretty organized and professional to me. Brady and his crew did not look out of their depths at all. It was smooth and ran well.

Some other things we can see along the way. The list is probably exhaustive but just a few for me...

Do they put in good gameplans every week

Do they make good in game adjustments when those plans dont work out the way they expect and to match the other teams adjustments

Does the D tackle better

Do they stop giving up all kinds of 3rd and longs

Is the team disciplined/do they cut back on stupid penalties

Do they get after the QB and actually make the sack

Do they manage the entire game well (the past Bills always seemed to play like ass for a quarter or two)

Do they not get tight in big moments

Can they win the 1 seed

There are many things we can look at, but those are at the top of the list for me. It's not just January that matters. The odds Brady makes/wins a superbowl year one are pretty low. Im not talking gambling odds. It's low odds in general that any team makes it to the superbowl. For that to be the only criteria that matters doesn't seem fair to me.

The shopping list has changed. That is the point Pegula poorly tried to make with his Keon Coleman comment in the presser. The coaching staff influences the roster.

The beginning of the Brady era looks real good, and his hire of Jim Leohnard was a home run.  It's just tough to expect a first year head coach to win the Super Bowl.  It's almost (but not quite) impossible actually based on NFL history.

On the flip side, we're starting the second half of the Josh Allen era as well...and there's no time to waste.  So yeah, go win that SB this year Joe.  I think he can do it!

I was really hoping we got Grant Udinski.  I fell for the "prodigy" label he was giving.  I was impressed with the way he conducts himself in the public, he does seem very knowledgeable.

The Brady hire was deflating.

I know the regular season hasn't started yet but I'm feeling more comfortable with him.

ask again around week 8 but he's looking pretty solid so far...

I’m a “wait until January guy” because I don’t think we are seeing if Joe Brady can be a good NFL HC. That isn’t what he is here to be. That’s maybe unfair but it is Super Bowl or bust. The Bills looking organized, and good, in October means nothing to me. The floor is incredibly high as is the ceiling. Brady isn’t here to “keep it going.” He’s here to “take it further.” If Brady took the Raiders job, for example, we would be looking at those other things. If he was hired by the Bills or Ravens (to a lesser degree) it was to go further than they’ve been.

we will have wait and see. my thinking is....Jim Leonard hiring should light a fire under his ass. if Brady is sub-par after say 2 years...Leonard gets the hc job

All those things I listed are things that help get over the hump. One does not just play one good game in the Champ game to get there. Odds are he isn't going to get over the hump this season. So if he doesn't, do you just want to fire a coach every season until you hit that lotto ticket or do you want to look and see if the guy is actually a good coach or not?

If you put any time at all into researching Brady’s history and his rise in the coaching ranks, I don’t understand this thinking at all.

We have a Wunderkind of our own, without all of the Sean McVay fawning, pomp, and circumstance.

Just watch.

I hope so 🫪

To some extent. However, looking at how Beane approached this draft and off-season, it sure looked near identical (with the exception of CG) to the others, which leads me to believe that even though the coaching stuff has input, Beane is the true leader of the roster.
