If you weren't on board with the Brady promotion, do you feel better today?

I wanted McDermott gone (for years). I didn’t necessarily care who was next. I didn’t know who was the best option but I knew it wasn’t McDermott. Brady wasn’t my first choice but honestly, I was pretty indifferent to who came in.

 

The things that I wanted to see were a more aggressive team on both sides of the ball and a team centered around Josh. Josh as “1/11th” didn’t work. If you’re going to win one, it’s because of his greatness. That’s 100% it. You may win one because you have the biggest cheat code in the sport, and arguably the biggest cheat code the sport has ever seen. Don’t try to make extraordinary fit it. He is different and I wanted whoever was calling the shots to subscribe to that. By all accounts Brady has done that.

 

With that said, nothing matters until the playoffs. I’m on record (many times) that hundreds, if not thousands, of football coaches could have this team in the playoffs every year. The floor is about 10 wins so I was never worried about the bottom falling out. The Bills have the 2nd best odds to win the Super Bowl so Vegas is aligned with that. If Brady wins 11 or 12 games (or whatever) and gets bounced in the WC or Divisional round his seat is hot going into year 2 (for me at least). You have a 30 year-old Josh Allen and we don’t have another 9 years to figure out if the HC is good enough in the big games. Brady will either take them further, or he won’t. By 2028, the Bills have to have a Super Bowl appearance or I want someone else. That new guys will be given the same 2 years from me. The clock is ticking.

Fans of Seattle, KC, NE, and Baltimore can look back fondly on better days/moments if they fail this year. They have all won titles in recent memory. Two of those fan bases have been spoiled rotten by having top three QB's of all-time. 

 

What do we have? Wide right, The Music City Miracle, three other SB losses, 13 seconds, and the "debacle" in Denver. If the season ends without a SB win, it's a failure for the Bills and most of their fans. Doesn't matter if it's a blowout loss in the wild card round or a close loss in the SB. We are going into year 9 of the Allen era. He's 30 and there's alot of miles on that body. Time is not on our side. 

 

That leads to intense pressure for Brady. Fans want results now. Hopefully he ignores the outside noise and is just himself.

The longer they had to wait to interview Kubiak, the more I became convinced he would be the hire, for a variety of reasons. I had come around to the idea, but was not over the top enthused. Seeing him fill out his staff with people who could supplant him as head coach if he failed was a refreshing display of self confidence/self awareness. Listening to him talk is a challenge because it seems he has difficulty filtering and organizing his communication, however hearing his first camp has been an organized, well oiled machine for a first year head coach suggests someone who's done a lot of thinking and planning for this time when it finally came. The results are what count, but he's done a lot of things between his hire and now to allay concerns that would come with any first time HC, let alone one with SB expectations from a fanbase in year 1.

Don't get me wrong I want to win a Super Bowl sooner than later but I don't agree with this narrative that it's time to panic that Josh Allen is about to completely fall off a cliff. Jim Kelly didn't start going to the Super Bowls until he was 30. John Elway won those two back to back Super Bowls at the tail end of his career. The biggest variable for me has always been getting enough talent around Allen to be able to win one. For example those Broncos teams Elway won the Super Bowls with were much more talented than those early Broncos teams he lost the Super Bowls with. 

 

We might finally have a much needed gamebreaker on Defense in Deon Walker, and bringing in DJ Moore looks like a solid move so far so I think we are going in the right direction. I think we are only a couple missing pieces away. My point in this is Allen is good enough to win a Super Bowl there's no doubt about it, it's just about being able to put together all of the right pieces around him. I don't think we are 100% there yet but we are close and we still have a little bit of time to get it figured out

I really didn't like the hire at all and felt like the coaching "search" was all for show. I just felt like the entire bandaid needed to be ripped off, and that included Beane.

 

That being said, I have to admit that the team seems to have a different vibe this offseason and during the first two preseason games. A little more fire and a little bit looser. I could just be talking myself into them like I always do, but I feel better than I did six months ago.

After seeing Brady this preseason, yes I feel better about it than I did when he was hired as hc. My biggest fear was that Brady was gonna keep us in the same offensive scheme that we've seen the last 3ish seasons and just roll with what worked. However, judging by the first 2 pre season games, it seems they have definitely made some changes. Maybe Brady was limited with our wr group last year, who knows, but I like what I've seen so far. I've said it a few times now and I'll keep saying it, having Pete Carmichael makes me feel alot better, and can take alot of stress off Bradys shoulders

I take the exact opposite view. McDermott wanted Allen to be part of his "do your 1/11" mantra. That was never going to be the formula. I want the identity of the team to be "we have Josh Allen, you don't." Brady has taken that approach. Even in preseason game 1, it was "our QB can hit these throws outside and downfield, yours can't." Very happy to see that identity come back into the fold.

 

Overall I've been impressed with the crispness I've seen from the team in training camp and preseason. It at least confirms my suspicions that moving on from McDermott will not lead to any kind of step back from the team. Whether it produces a step forward will be determined in January.

If I never see a defensive timeout called just before the snap in an end-of-half situation just to "make sure we have the right defense called" (except of course when there's 13 seconds left and the offense has 3 timeouts and you call sideline protect) I'll be overjoyed.

I kinda sorta feel better. Yes it is only preseason but a lot of positives showing on the field and 2 convincing dubs.

 

Except for the few injuries I think this off-season has been pretty good. And harbinger of even better things to come!

 

the Oliver family is still heavy on my heart though Im not gonna lie. But that technically is personal and not at all related to Brady perse. Except he giving the player his due respect and space

As of this moment, I'm confident that we have good coaches and chemistry between the players and staff.  If they're in the right order, I'm not sure.  I really like Jim Leonard, and think he has the makings to be a very good HC, but what the hell do I know?

it had the smell of meddler Wilson and also Levy, always hiring loyal yes men and not a go getter. But i am cautiously optimistic as i hear more of him publicly speaking. He seems to be made for this spot.. If he can game day plan even just avg.. at all he will be good. McD was not a good game day manager.

I will say this about Brady 

 

I feel confident enough that he will continue the winning culture 

 

AND 

 

that maybe - just maybe - he will make a handful to a dozen more decisions that McDermott couldn’t or wouldn’t make.

 

i have said this numerous times that just that small amount of decisions in game this team would have a championship or two 

 

McDermott - for whatever reason - would outsmart himself in critical or high stress situations 

 

we all saw the moments he looked like a ghost and wanted to puke - if Brady can stay calm and make just a few better decisions in the moment - we will have continued success and probably more.

 

guess we have to wait and see but I am hoping and leaning more positive

That bar is so sky-high; it's crazy, as the only NFL team better than the Buffalo Bills over the last decade has been the KC Chiefs. Anything other than a playoff run to the AFC Championship game will be considered a failure by most fans here. 

 

So many fans here complained about the WR screens and missed play calls. He never did find that X boundary outside WR to step up the last few years despite some of them having elite speed. Then to find out that the now-departed O-line coach was mainly responsible for the run/pass blocking schemes, along with that fantastic Buffalo run game. 

 

We Bills fans can only hope that this guy has it together!
