They could put him on the PUP list to start the season.  Sherfield sticks around as the 5th WR because of his ST play.  Hardman gets cut because of his drops yesterday and Davis returns punts and kickoffs.

I agree. Stick him on IR which gives him time to study film and get healthy, if Sherfield doesn't make the most of his opportunities when he's out there, cut him and activate Bell

How old is Sherfield? He’s been on 3 or 4 teams in the last year and Bills fans think he’s making the team after a few catches against some scrubs.🙄

He makes it based on special teams.

Sherfield and Maclin have done nothing to make me think we should depend on them.  I've seen enough of Sherfield to expect 10 catches and a bunch of special teams.  Maclin has had some pop in a couple preseason games but even without seeing Bell I'd have greater expectations of what Bell could do on the field than either of them.  If Maclin could show something as a punt returner, or even the ability to field kicks without TO's, it wouldn't hurt my feeling to roster him over Hardman.

How are players who barely play supposed to show anything?

I agree with you that people take too much stock into Pre-Season games....

But I also have Sherfield making the roster. It's less about "a few catches against scrubs" and more to do with

1.) Needing Special Teams players after losing core guys this off-season and Sherfield sticking around the league for his stellar Teams play. This is why Sherfield was signed - not for his WR play.

2.) Mecole Hardman seemingly losing the Punt Return gig to Ray Davis - which was his only real path to the roster. Combined with poor WR play and I feel pretty safe in saying he's not making the 53.

3.) Skyler Bell's status as a member of the 53 is at least in question - given how much integral training as a Rookie he's missed and Beane's propensity for Redshirting Day 3 Rookies with an Injury Designation.

If Bell isn't on the Active 53 for Week 1, Sherfield is WR5 on a Roster that will keep at least 5. Even if he is, I still see us keeping him as a 6th WR - here for his Special Teams.

It's not my job to figure that out.  Sherfield certainly has had his chances.  Hell, the guy started for us in the playoffs if I remember right and managed to get 1 catch on 3 targets.  He's a special teamer and willing blocker and that's about it.  Maclin is doing his best with the snaps he's getting and that's the only reason anyone is even talking about him.  Still don't think either has done enough that we'd shelf Bell for the season thinking we're all set at WR.

Clarify #3 for me - are you saying Bell should be put on IR?  If so, how does that help his development?

It's based on Special Teams.  If your 6th WR doesn't play ST, it's almost a wasted roster spot.

Not to mention, if you're in a roster spot battle, how else are you supposed to earn your spot on the roster?  It's like you're viewing his performance as a negative because it was against scrubs.  He won't be able to earn a roster spot by beating 1st Teamers because 1st Teamers aren't playing.

If Sherfield sticks it will be for the reasons you listed here.  Probably the same for Solomon and Franklin in some respects.  Which has me debating in my head who's better at their position (not special teams)?

I recall he tracked and caught a deflected pass for a TD.

I think it was a big first down vs the Chiefs so it was actually a needed catch.  I think Keon got the deflection but I'm old and everything muddles together after a while.

I'm wrong about the deflection.  Just looked it up Shakir had the only TD in that game.  Sherfield did catch a big first down in the final drive of the 4th to get us in FG range before Bass missed the kick.

There were a lot of posters excited by Skyler Bell's Prospects as a 4th Round Pick that was viewed to have been a little bit of a bargain where we took him.

Though in Training Camp, it appeared that he would need some time to develop (as Rookies often do) as he was reportedly clearly 5th in the pecking order, behind Keon Coleman and Josh Palmer.

Then he got hurt:

Since then, he's missed both Pre-Season games, the scrimmage against the Browns, and the Bills 2nd scrimmage practice at the stadium. Which is very important development time for a Rookie.

It's led me to wonder - will Beane do with him as he's done with other Day 3 Picks and IR him?

If he's ready, I personally wouldn't. As doing so woud delay the development process. But this is something Beane is known to do and his injury and missing important training for a Rookie lines up with Beane's M.O. when he has done this in the past.

Joe B said he was dealing with a groin injury. He also said he did some stuff during the joint practice this week and that Bell said the goal is to play this coming 3rd game.

Bell may be on the 53 man roster, but I doubt he'll be much of a factor on offense this year.  Even if the Bills were to revert to their "everybody eats" approach from last season (which I don't expect) there are lots more mouths that will be clamoring for balls than the Bills had last season.

If you go back to the OP I made on this thread, I never said he should. I actually said, just as you did, that if he's relatively healthy that I wouldn't because that delays his development.

But that doesn't change the fact that this is lining up perfectly with the kind of motus operandi Beane has when he IR's a Rookie.

Day 3 Pick that looks like he's not ready to be thrown into the fire right out of the gate. Has an injury that not only has him missing extremely valuable training that a Rookie needs (so far both Pre-Season games, the scrimmage with the Browns, the 2nd team scrimmage at Highmark, and weeks of practice) but also allows Beane to stash the guy with a legitimate designation.

Again, I'm not saying he "should". Just that this is something Beane has done a number of times in the past and I could easily see him doing it again with Bell, the way things are going.

And if he does, then it's likely he won't be PUP'ed for 4 weeks or IR'ed for the season.

But if he doesn't, I think I'd almost expect it. Actually ran across a tweet on my feed as I was typing this from someone else thinking the same thing:

I don't think it's a matter of "who's better" - I think all 3 stick for Special Teams.

You have to keep in mind that both Solomon and Franklin were core Teams guys last year. So were Reggie Gilliam and Cam Lewis, who need to be replaced.

VanSumeran likely replaces Gilliam. But you need someone to replace Lewis' role as an every down veteran Special Teams guy. That's where Sherfield comes in.

I wasn't tallking cuts or roster building.  I was just debating it in my head.  They're all pretty good on special teams.  Franklin probably the best of the bunch, but who's best at being their respective position?  Just "thinking out loud" if you will.

Was hoping that Bell would show more, but with the injuries and being a rookie in his first training camp, hard to tell if he can become a player.
