BillsPride12 Posted August 18 Posted August 18 Apparently Jim Kelly let it slip during his annual golf tournament that he knows Andre Reed getting his jersey retired by the Bills is in in the works and could happen as early as next season. I will say I am surprised but I'm not against it. I only say I'm surprised because they have already issued number 83 to other players over the years which is usually a sign the team doesn't have plans to retire the number. But Reed is the best wide receiver in franchise history IMO and was the last member of that Core 4 from the Super Bowl years that hadn't gotten the honor so I don't have any issues with it although I think he was always looked at as a borderline player for that particular honor. And to be honest I'm sure a big part of it on the Bills end is they want to be able to have a ceremony/enshrinement like that for the new stadium 5 1 2 Quote

With most of them wearing numbers in the single digits or teens these days, 83 is not a number that would be in high demand. I was reading some of the comments on X and there was a guy "pounding the table" for them to retire Darryl Talley's number next. I love Darryl but there's no way his number should be retired and it's not even close. After they retire Reed's number there shouldn't be another Bills player getting their number retired until 17 goes up in the rafters. 2 3 Quote

He may have his number retired as part of a package deal, but as a stand alone I’d pass. EDIT: I’m not a big number retiring kind of guy, and the HOF is also watered down. JMO . Earned his place through pure grit and determination. A metaphor for life for many. Put that number up there yesterday. For a long stretch it was Jerry Rice, Andre Reed and then a few others sprinkled in for a few seasons. Sterling Sharpe. Andre Rison ect. But none of them were as consistently productive year in and year out as Jerry and Andre. 4 1 Quote

One game is just that, one game. I’m not bashing on the guy, he was great. Just not up there with Bruce, Thurman and Kelly (in that order) in terms of greatness.
