Maybe. My thought is the offense has been good enough to win the SB over the past few series, and has generally been let down by the D. If the D has improved to the level suggested today - and it is only pre season - then the offense just has to hold up at a similar level. Moore takes it over the top. What his presence does is buy the Bills some breathing space should there be issues with the D for whatever reason. 2 2 1 1 Quote

I agree with much of your post, but I'll say that I while I like what our starting receivers look like - i'm wary of just how important Moore is. If he goes down...sheesh. If anything today made me both excited about having a real receiver on the outside and even more eager to sign Cooks for another reliable separator. If Moore stays healthy I'm with ya It was interesting to see the Offense so WR-centric. We know Kincaid, and to a lesser extent, Knox will get theirs in the passing game, but it felt like the Daboll years with Daboll caliber receivers. I share your concern that so much of FINALLY making Josh Allen’s life easier relies on DJ Moore, but I think a healthy Kincaid can also play that role in opening up things for everyone else. Biggest takeaway on the Offense for me, is that I may have been too down on Shakir.. he’s a good player, but I never viewed him as a legit WR2. If that’s what he looks like with Moore out there, he’s going to have a huge year. Edited August 15 by SCBills 4 Quote

Scott7975 Posted August 15 Posted August 15 (edited) 15 mins worth of highlights from the game. Its from NFL so they wont let it embed. just click it. Man that pass to Moore from Allen to the right sideline for a first down... I didn't realize it but from the angle they show that throw was a difficult throw between defenders. Perfect pass. JAMIEBUF12 Posted August 15 Posted August 15 I absolutely love this new coaching staff💙 i remember a preseason game against tge Giants last season. The announcer was talking about how the Bills were like the second worst team getting off the field on third down and how bad the run defense was. So during that game the Giants are picking up like 3rd n 15 n 3rd n 24. The announcers were like “well Mcdermott is just scripting plays n dosn’t wanna show his hand” I’m like our run defense has been putrid for a few years now and Mcdermott should be focusing on run defense and 3rd down defense.I was sick to my stomach. After all that they were saying how slow and old the Bills defense was. Got tired of kids outplaying vets and not making the team, with Mcdermott’s excuse being “I run a complicated defense and I prefer my guys(the hurt, old, slow vets). Now with the new coaching staff it looks like if a kid does well in camp they can make the team. i like that coach Brady has 8:30 am practises and in the rain. i just feel like this defense is going to be alot better. GO BILLS!! 9 1 5 3 Quote

sven233 Posted August 15 Posted August 15 (edited) It's Preseason, so obviously everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. That said, I think Jim Leonhard is leading the best defense of all time into the season....... OK....maybe not, but there were a few things to really like about today's game regardless of the level of game planning. 1. Loved the amount of play action we saw today. For those of you that have followed me for years, you know I have been screaming for more uses of play action, especially with Josh Allen being so good at it. Today we saw a ton of it and I think that is pretty intentional. Why? Because I think what we saw today on offense is what they want to be..... They want to push the ball down the field a lot more this season than they have in years past under McDermott. I think they want to use the pass to open up the run game and now that they have the league's leading rusher on film, teams have no choice but to respect it and they will open up the intermediate levels of the field for Allen. 2. RBs are going to be more involved in the pass game. We have heard the desire to do that all summer and today it showed. Several swings and even a successful screen play. Nice to see. You get teams having to pay attention to Cook and the rest of the backs underneath in the passing game, all that is going to do is open up the rest of the field for the WRs to work. 3. That brings me to my next positive..... Shakir was actually running real NFL routes down the field! And wouldn't you know it.....he was actually really good at it. Obviously most of the attention will be given to Moore, and for good reason, but if we can get Shakir down the field into the intermediate areas and not constantly within 10 yards of the LOS, it is only going to do good things for not only Moore, but for Kincaid down the seams and his flag routes that he is so good at. 4. All that said, obviously there wasn't a lot of scheming going on so we still don't know exactly what to expect. And of course, with no scheming, that leaves the offensive line out to dry a bit and what I saw today was a bit concerning. As much as you can scheme things up to help your line, sometimes this game is just a man whooping another man and today, our offensive line, including our potential star RT, got whooped a few times. So, that was a bit concerning. 5. On to the defense..... Well, what else needs to be said. We better enjoy Leonhard while he is here because I have a feeling he will be a HC sooner rather than later! Just an absolute dominating performance from the defense and that was without 3 starters in CJGJ, Bishop, and Hairston. And, it just occurred to me that now it the first time I am even thinking about Hoecht not playing in this game and he looked like the best player in the NFL for the few quarters he actually played last season. So, adding him back in to be sort of a hybrid chess piece that is going to line up everywhere is also going to make an impact if he stays healthy. Again, maybe I am having a little fun with what happened on the field today and exaggerating a bit. But, I was encouraged by what I saw. Yeah, there was no game plan and it was pretty vanilla out there, but you saw the shell of what they want this defense to be. A bunch of guys at the line clogging up run lanes before the snap, guys shooting gaps and forcing the play where they want it to go, and playing tight on the back end. We didn't see a lot of exotic stunts, of course, but the core principles were there and it was nice to see the defense laying that foundation of dictating rather than reacting. It's what I have been wanting our defense to do for so long now. And yes, it will lead to some more big plays against, but who cares!!!!! Even with a big play or 2 against, the other offense still has to keep pace with Josh Allen and our offense and I'll take my chances in that matchup any day. 6. I am not going to go through all the players that played well because there are so many, but I have to shout out Deon Walker. The guy made it impossible not to mention him individually as he dominated every series he was in there. He just looked different out there and that is only going to help guys like Oliver, Groot, and Chubb see more 1 on 1 matchups. 7. Speaking the the guys on the edge, I thought they all played well. Everyone contributed, but what was nice to see is that the entire front 7 worked well together and complimented each other. There were several plays where the edge rushers didn't get home, but they collapsed the pocket and forced the QB to move and rethink his original plan which led to plays by others. So, that was encouraging. Obviously, we need to see what happens when the regular season rolls around, but it was a great start to what this defense could possibly be. I could keep going, but this is probably too much as it is about a freaking preseason game, especially with how vanilla everything was. But regardless of the lack of game planning and scheming, it was nice to see the base stuff we are trying to do. You can already tell things are going to be different in terms of philosophy on both sides of the ball. It's early, but I have a sneaky suspicion that it isn't going to take long to see just how much say McDermott had on not just the type of defense we were running, but how much say he had in what the offense was doing as well. I think things are going to look drastically different on both sides of the ball and I think it will be for the better. And finally....... Time to bubble wrap the starters on both sides of the ball. Yes, reps are important, but potential injuries to key guys outweigh the benefits of a handful of snaps the rest of the way. Edited August 15 by sven233 15 2 2 Quote
4th&long Posted August 15 Posted August 15 One of the things that stuck out to me today was the announcers saying that Brady is adamant about stopping the run. He said they have to stop the run first. I can’t tell you how many times I turned off the game the last few seasons because they were getting the ball shoved down their throats. Hopefully they can improve on that like Brady wants. 4 1 Quote

Steptide Posted August 15 Posted August 15 (edited) Just finished watching the game. Had to record it and watch it back. Moore will greatly help our offense. The offense overall (with the starters) reminded me alot more of the daboll years. Both sides of the ball seemed alot less neutered for lack of a better term. However, it is pre season. Cautiously optimistic for this coaching staff Edited August 15 by Steptide 2 2 Quote

He isn’t “a piece.” The whole argument that “the offense has been good enough” isn’t true. They may be now. They looked special today despite the 1st team OL with some bumps (although they weren’t at full strength). 7 3 Quote
