1 surprise that makes the team and 1 surprise cut

This is always a fun game especially leading into the preseason. Every year there is a guy or 2 that was off the radar that makes the team. There’s also someone that you’re surprised to see cut. For this exercise I wouldn’t think of bubble guys like Dwayne Carter for either side. It won’t be a surprise if he is on the team or cut.

 

Whether you are using injuries, or suspensions or camp buzz or whatever, who is 1 guy that you think makes it that is a little unexpected and 1 cut that’s considered a surprise?

 

I’ll go first.

Kani Walker is a great one. It sounds like he came out of nowhere and is getting an opportunity

I'm not going to predict these will actually happen, but I could see it.

 

Cut: Ty Johnson

Keep: Keleki Latu

 

Johnson fell off a bit last year and I haven't heard much of him from camp reports. We'd save $2.4M in cap if we cut him. Maybe Ian Wheeler would be the replacement or maybe we'd look at other team's cuts.

 

Latu has reportedly looked great at camp and he plays special teams. Since we'll run a lot of 12 and 13 personnel I could see them deciding that a 4th TE is worth keeping if Latu is clearly better than whatever other players we're considering for the last spot on the roster. Also worth noting he was on the active roster from week 17 through the playoffs last year.

I know he's Josh's buddy. I know Josh is iron man and rarely misses even a snap. But from all accounts, Kyle has been playing himself out of a job. There are going to be several QBs cut that would be an improvement. If Buechelle doesn't get the QB2 job, I think Kyle is gone and we bring in a vet back up.

I'm going to keep this spot flexible. I want to see at least a preseason game. If I had to pick today, my surprise keep would be Mecole Hardman. He has the speed they want to put out there and adds snaps on STs. But I may edit later to reflect a guy that surprises

Before Palmer really started to shine in camp, I was taking a serious look at Sherfield as a legit option as a depth WR. Every season there are players on the 53 that leave the fanbase scratching their heads, but the role he would fill is important. He has the versatility that they want in someone that far down the depth chart, including special teams, and he is loved in the locker room. He could be this season's Cam Lewis. All that being said, it's hard to see him on the team unless they're carrying six WRs, which seems unlikely.

Good call on Ty Johnson. Maybe this is finally the year Baby Gore makes the team. I don't think he's as locked in as years past... especially now losing snaps to injury and 2 young RBs on his heels. Also, it could lead to more 3rd down snaps for Cook which isn't a bad thing IMO.

Corbett may also be a guy they can move for a late day 3 pick. He's experienced, not expensive and may be good depth for a team thin on the IOL.

I still expect Sherfield to make it, on the logic that one of your WRs needs to be a core special teamer, and he's the only candidate. Hard-man (autocorrect but I'm keeping it) only returns punts; he doesn't do coverage or blocking. If Sherfield doesn’t make the team, I’ll be really curious to see how they manage their special teams units.

Johnson’s value to this team is the smaller stuff he does. He can be replaced as a runner for sure but the other running backs don’t have his pass blocking ability . That’s why he’s been around so long plus his pass catching ability down the field

To me, Gore has a bit more power and burst. Plus younger and cheaper. There's always trade offs when talking which player to keep.

As much as I would hate to see it because I love me some Ty Johnson, it makes sense.  
 

Ty vs Gore vs Wheeler is an interesting battle that I didn’t really existed- but it certainly may.  Good thought.  
 

I could see Latu as a possibility if VanSumeran and Acker are both meh and they think one of the TEs can handle that role.  Another possibility is if they keep 5 WRs and Latu plays that ST role  filled by shavers/sherfield

Cut- Kyle Allen, but I don’t think it should be a surprise

 

Keep- Keonta Jenkins-  I think it may come down to whether or not Andreesen shows he can cover in the preseason.   If he’s getting schooled by 3rd and 4th stringers in the pass game, it may be PS time for Buffalo Joe.  Jenkins size has me a little skeptical but let’s see what he can do.  Eager to watch him play today.

It's seemed like the competition for starting LG has been primarily between Anderson, and Corbett. The question with Corbett might be: If Alec Anderson wins the starting job, would Corbett be appropriate for the 6th lineman in jumbo packages? Seems that's a vital role for the backup guard. Just in general, backup linemen need versatility.

The issue with Waker is he's been hurt and out of the last few practices and he's likely to miss today's game - maybe more depending on severity of injury.

 

An Undrafted who has a ceiling of CB6, on a team that isn't going to dress more than 5 and doesn't need to carry more than 5 on the roster (with the versatility they have with their CB's and Safeties), is also likely to miss Pre-Season time, and can easily be brought back to the Practice Squad - would be a major surprise. Regardless of how he's looked in a handful of Training Camp practices.

Wouldn't be the first time they've carried four TEs (I can't imagine them taking Latu over Hawes), and this is the second season Latu has made a pretty strong case for himself.
