DJ Moore is going to be an "Elite WR" this season

Writing is on the wall.

 

Now that we've gone through OTAs, minicamp and the St. John portion of TC, it's pretty clear the chemistry between Allen and Moore is reminiscent of Allen and Diggs when Diggs came in 2020.

 

No, I don't see Moore leading the NFL in receptions & receiving yards. Buffalo has better secondary weapons than we did in 2020 and Allen’s growth as a QB who sees the field so well is going to spread the ball around more than in 2020.

 

But I also think we're going to pass a good bit more than the last couple years and with Moore we no longer have to fall back on Mesh in those 3rd down gotta have it moments. 

 

Moore can still clearly get open. From all the reports it sounds like his worst rep of camp was against Benford who got an INT because Moore slipped on the wet grass in the rain. Sounds like it was a physical rep, but Moore slipped.

 

And I think we'll continue to revisit the whole "DJ Moore is washed!!!" narrative, but I spent a bored Friday evening (my life is so exciting) watching highlights of every single year of his career.

 

I just don't see a washed or diminished player. Honestly, his skillset excites me more than what we had with Diggs. Moore is a true all over the field threat. Diggs was, too, but Moore's at his best downfield. That wasn't Diggs.

 

Plus there's the speed and YAC ability.

 

I just think it all fits with Allen and this offense and we're going to hear a lot of backtracking nationally this coming season about DJ Moore the player and the cost to acquire him.

I want to believe this.  The reports from camp suggest this, but we haven't seen him in even a preseason game yet.  I still want to believe this.

I think DJ Moore is perfect fit. I think he'll produce 70 to 80 catches but everyone else around will produce 5 to 20 more, cause and effect. I believe DJs attitude and professionalism is what we did not get at a high enough consistent level from Diggs and he brought some drama in Allen's early day's that nobody really enjoyed.

 

Got to see it in games.  Got to stay healthy,  but I'm liking what I'm hearing too!

If all tendencies continued as they were we have one of the leagues best running offenses with very capable ball control/RAC pass catchers with Kincaid and Shakir.  If Moore can actually win with any regularity at outside WR he has a chance to do some great things.  I think he's more talented than this but let's say his floor is prime Gabe Davis with more speed and better hands he could do a lot of pass catching in that capacity.  If he's more dynamic beating guys off the LOS he certainly could catch more passes at X than anyone we've put out there in a few years.  I'm going to hold off until I see a few weeks of the offense before I get too excited.  I was hoping Cooper would have more left in the tank than he did.  I'm excited for Moore but I'm trying to be more measured in that excitement until I see Josh show that they're on the same page.

I get it, it's just before the season, let's jump the gun on everything (Moore is elite, Coleman sucks because he dropped 2 balls, Landon Jackson is somehow both having an amazing camp and nonexistent at the same time, etc) but let's pump the brakes just a little bit.  The overreactions, but good and bad, is what inevitably turns things toxic by, say, game 4 when we are calling for crazy things like "trade James Cook for a bag of footballs" or "Cole Bishop should've but cut or traded after his first season, he's a bust!"

 

The discussions are fun (well honestly, not really) but they always turn sour

I saw one rep where he gave up on Caleb mid-scramble.  Just stopped his broken route and walked off the field. 

I knew he wouldn't be a Bear for long after that.

I do believe that BBB got great value for that 2nd Rd selection.  DJ was better than anything available at that selection.

If im remembering right he'd accidentally stepped outta bounds and removed himself from the play because if he was targeted it wouldve been a wasted down; reception + penalty to nullify 1st down, or incomplete amd 4th down.

 

Was actually a heads up play because Caleb wouldve had no way of knowing Moore was ineligible for the catch

Moore will make our WR room functional and so our offense great. I don’t think his accounting stats will be top 15 but his efficiency may skyrocket after bottoming out the last two years.

Its training camp. Lets wait and see. Have high hopes but you can not judge anything from camp. Best not to pay attention to any reports and wait until week 1.

What do you anticipate by saying he will be Elite?

 

I think he will be fine if he stays healthy.  I think he should lead the Bills, but I don’t expect Elite - one of the top 5 WRs or so in the NFL.
 

I think everyone gets way over amped on preseason and training camp where guys are not even trying 100% and there is limited hitting especially up front.

 

I expect that he will put up top 30-40 WR numbers - essentially a low end #1, but I am hoping that others - especially Kincaid stay healthy and get a lot of targets.

 

I don’t want them giving Moore targets similar to Diggs in 2020 as I think that would disrupt this offense and would not be helpful for Moore who just is not that receiver.  
 

I would like to see him get close to what Shakir got last year or a bit less 90 targets and really see the bills spread the ball around - actually use the everyone eats plan and utilize WRs, TEs, and RBs in the short and mid throws.

As I said in the OP, I don't know what stats he'll have, but I think he's going to have enough receptions and yards to bump himself into that Elite conversation.

Moore has been a 120-140 target 1000 yard WR all of his career except last year and his rookie year.

 

This acquisition actually very much reminds me of the Diggs acquisition. 

 

And like with Diggs, I think our offense funnels through Moore with Kincaid at #2 and Shakir a fairly distant #3.

 

I think we're going to pass the ball more than Allen’s 460 attempts last season in 16 games. And in those 16 games Shakir had 95 targets.

 

I don't see why it's hard to see 130-140 targets for our new #1 WR  if Allen has the 500+ pass attempts I think he'll have this season. And considering the route tree and the downfield ball winner Moore is, he's probably going to have more than 7.6 yards per target. He averages 8.4 Y/tgt in his career. All this with bleh at QB.

 

If you believe he's the 30th-40th best WR, you expect mediocrity out of him. Those would be maybe WR2 expectations.

Moore is 29 years old and will be all season (his birthday is in April).

 

When asked generally, many folks (from looking at a bunch of articles and forums) say that wide receivers peak years are generally ages 27-28. Which would assume there is a decline after that. Some people say the WR decline begins around 30 years old. And obviously, there are plenty of examples of GREAT receivers who played well into their mid-thirties with success (Rice, Fitzgerald, TO, A. Johnson, Harrison, Julio, Wayne, Carter, Allen, Hopkins, etc.).

 

 

Looking at these two articles below (that brought statistics and comparisons into the discussion), both sets of data actually showed that there were more peak or top-5 seasons by percentage at age 29 than any other age. [Granted, both articles are looking at it through the lens of fantasy football)

This PFF article (below) says that WRs who have had at least one big season, generally maintain their value until age 34, even though they may be slowing down in the process. It states that "The average variance from the composite is only 0.48 points from ages 24 to 32, which is the tightest overlap of any position." Meaning that from ages 24 to 32, receivers are playing at pretty much the same level. And while he notes that there is a general decline from ages 28-34 years old, the decline is gradual, not steep like it is for RBs or some other positions. It also points out that the bigger receivers generally have steeper declines. Moore is not a big WR.

So, the idea that Moore is washed (due to age at least) doesn't seem to hold up, imo. The other reason people may say he is past his prime is because his stats were the lowest of his career in Chicago last year (and they were good, not great for the Bears in 2024). But, I think anyone who looked into his last two years in Chicago can see it wasn't all on him (won't go into it all of that here as it has been discussed, but, QB play, run-first team, how many WRs they drafted/brought in, trying to force feed some of the younger guys, etc.). I also see some saying, IF he stays healthy. Moore has been very durable (knock on wood), missing only 2 games in 8 years (he has played 131 of a possible 133 games).

 

Moore is on the best team of his career, playing with the best QB he has had, will be a focal point of the offense, and he'll be playing in the season that at least some stats show that WRs have percentage-wise the most top-5 finishes (not saying he'll finish top-5 as we have a lot of mouths to feed, but you know what I mean). He must be both giddy (about Josh, the Bills, fresh start, new stadium, new Bills era, back with Brady) and also playing with a chip on his shoulder from his last two years with the Bears (trying to prove himself again). I smell a big season for D.J.
