I see this take all the time and it fully forgets the fact that he won with Tyrod Taylor as his QB.  It also gives him no credit for building a culture around Allen that allowed him to become who he is at QB.

The winning with Tyrod thing is really overblown in my opinion.

Lets call a spade a spade- They went 9-7 with a -57 point differential, and got in on a last minute miracle from Cincinnati. Their record from an advanced stat metric standpoint should have been like 6-10 or 7-9.

People forget that the Bills were 6-10 the following year in 2018.

Where McDermott does get credit, is building a culture and having a revolutionary defence.

He figured out how to slow the high flying passing attacks down by using light boxes and having a full time nickel player.

The issue? Teams adapted to 12/13 personnel and ran the ball more after the 2021/2022 seasons. He didn't adapt nearly enough to that change and stayed very stubborn in his philosophy on taking away the pass/deep play

Everyone talks about what a great person he is, but right off the bat he's talking about how he's been spending "a little more time" with his family, maybe dropping the kids off at school a couple of times, as if these are mundane crappy things that he would rather not be doing. He's a pathological workaholic. I wonder if his wife and kids think he's such an awesome guy?

Squander would be missing the playoffs multiple times..  Sean Payton had Hall of Fame Drew Brees in his prime and missed the playoffs five times

The bills never missed the playoffs after Josh Allen became really really good...

We just didn't get over the hump but guess what 31 teams don't... We literally scored 27-28 points a game for years... We had multiple defenses in the top five and 10 of the NFL they just didn't win the Super bowl.. and guess what health in the postseason had a lot to do with it too

He didn't get over the hump he didn't squander anything.. squander anything would be missing the playoffs we went to two AFC championship games and won a playoff game five straight years .. five offensive turnovers is a bigger reason we lost the Denver broncos last year not the defense.. without five turnovers they don't even gets close to scoring 30 and the bills win in regulation..  that's on the players

He just didn't win the ultimate prize... Sean Payton didn't go to the playoffs five times with a first ballad Hall of Fame quarterback.. that's squandering in those seasons

A Super bowl takes as much luck as skill to win because it takes some balls bouncing your way.. the bills have been in the final four or eight consistently the last 6 years

Making a couple of plays here there is the difference.. if brandin Cooks holds on to that ball through the ground and we kicked the field goal and win.. going into foxboro next week it's a completely different story

When the game is on the line players need to make plays.. you can't turn it over five times in a playoff game either... If the offense didn't do that the Bills win comfortably vs Denver

The last time the bills played a playoff game .. sloppiness on the offense squandered the game

He squandered 13 seconds.  That was him over there on both timeouts setting the defense.  He squandered multiple playoff games not putting the extra coaching effort to introduce some new wrinkles into the defense to gain advantage over the opponent.

Definitely wasn't as egregious as the other poster made it out to be, but you have to press your luck to make those one or two plays to win the game.  Especially if you don't have the elite talent level.

McDermott revived a woeful organization.   Right from the start he was involved in the draft and in setting a better culture.  He is why Beane is here.  McD took them only so far, as discussed a lot here.  But his era was a revival and put Buffalo back on the nation’s football map.  His era stands as top 3 in Bills history behind Levy/Polian and Saban’s first regime.

On top of that he was a great community member and class act.  He will coach again, and win again.

They broke a 17 year playoff drought with a below average quarterback.   Advanced metrics it all you want but it doesn't change reality.

The Bills have gone 9-7 before in the drought twice and didn't make the playoffs

If Andy Dalton doesn't complete that 4th and 13 pass to win the game to break the drought, does that change your opinion on it? (Serious question)

McDermott never even made it to the Super Bowl with prime, Superman Josh Allen, and in fact he never really got close.  He was a squanderer, like it or not..

All youz guyz criticizing McD would have crapped your pants if in the same position. Year after year. The epitome of Monday Morning coaching.

You clearly were not in my living room as :13 seconds unfolded, beginning with his failure to heed my sage advice to run the mortar kick they'd been executing flawlessly all year.

But now @MPL has me amused by the image of McDermott skulking about, peeking around corners and spying on people's ex's :D

I don't care what any body says this is one hell of a good guy & a great coach ! Sure he didn't take our team to the big game but by some of his answers you can tell he was part of & IMHO always will be part of the Bills Mafia !!

While here & I think through out the rest of his career he will bleed Bills red, white & Blue & he put the team & the Bills fans before he did him self as a coach of the team . His perspective is great on every thing I heard in his answers .

I wish him good luck unless of course he plays the Bills & believe 1 day he will win a SB because of what he learned while being the coach of the Bills !!

It’s nice what you wrote. But I believe that he believed that he knew what was best for the team, so in his mind putting himself first—his coaching philosophy and execution—was putting the team first. In the end, his way didn’t get the ultimate prize, what every coach should strive for. Hope he learns from it and is more flexible if he ever gets a top job again. Jury is absolutely out on if that will happen.

Does everything else during his tenure stay exactly the same?  If so, then no, it wouldnt change my opinion at all.

Good, even great coaches had losing seasons with great quarterbacks.  Sean Payton had multiple losing seasons with Drew Brees.  Mike McCarthy had a losing season with Aaron Rodgers when Rodgers threw 2 interceptions the entire season.    Bad coaches have faired even worse with great quarterbacks, Mike McCoy couldnt win with Phillip Rivers.   McDermott had one losing season in nine years here.   Just because he didnt win a Super Bowl here doesnt mean he wasnt a fantastic coach.   For a team to be that good for that long you need more than a great Quarterback.  You need an entire organization working in lock step, and McDermott was paramount in that.

My point here isnt to say Josh didnt play a massive part in McDermott winning, but to say it was 100% all Josh is revisionist history.    Josh was on the team when they went 6-10.     Saying Josh had everything to do with McDermott being successful here is way to easy and ignores so much of what was built during his tenure as coach.

McDermott is a good coach.

But when you're a defensive coach and when Bo Nix is now tearing you up in the playoffs, your value becomes less.  It was time.

I find it a bit ironic that McD complained about the poor roster, Pegula then went up to the podium and defended how great the roster was, and then the team proceeded to gut that very roster McD complained about and Pegula said was good enough.

How many key Defensive players from last years team is on the street right now? Almost 50% of them! 5 of the 11 Defensive starters are new.

We'd won 4 superbowls if they'd put me in 4th quarter.

I threw a football over them mountains...

I feel he will get another job his win percentage & what he did in Buffalo is to ago d to go unnoticed by other owners looking to get their teams better & I feel he will be at the top of a lot of lists next season .

True that in the end his way didn't get the ultimate prize but there was help in many different ways to keep him from that goal, in the KC game 2 years ago & then last season the refs had a HUGE hand in making the Bills dreams fall short which in no way was his fault .

Anyone can look at the replay of that catch & know it was aa catch beyond a shadow of a doubt but I feel the powers that be had more to do with it in some cases than we may know but maybe that's just me !!

GO BILLS !!

And this was confirmed by whom? What credible source?

I thought the unconfirmed rumors of a Beane power play were put to rest long ago, but thanks for dredging them up again.
