Some Week 1 Discussion: How Good is Houston's Defense?

Best Defense in the NFL, but we have one of the best Offenses in the NFL, led by the best player in the league. 
 

Biggest difference.. we know what they can do, but as long as both teams enter Week 1 healthy, we have the following, that we did not have last year…

 

Healthy Dawkins (Concussed last year)

 

Healthy Brown (Left game last year)

 

Kincaid (Missed last year)

 

Moore (On Chicago last year)

 

That’s our two best OL, who happen to go up against their two best DL, along with our two best playmakers who are capable of beating man coverage and zone.

Those teams all won Super Bowls.  Can Houston ride this Defense to a championship? Obviously it is their Offense that is holding them back and they have done nothing on that side of the ball to make me think they will take any big leaps forward Offensively but if the chips fall the right way is that Defense good enough to take them all the way?

 

Buffalo got clobbered by their D in last year's matchup but we have a new weapon in DJ Moore this season and we were dealing with injuries to Dawkins and Brown in last year's matchup. I think we give them a much tougher game this time around but I could see it going either way at this point. Will still be the toughest matchup for our Offense this season

I was reading an article...the reason they are good is that their front-four is awesome and can attack the quarterback without requiring blitzing.  This allows their LBs to be in coverage more often than not and there by reducing those intermediate 10-15 yard plays.  They effectively have been choking Josh Allen by being able to attack with the front four.

I think we have a defense that will keep Stroud and friends in check. 2 TDs and a FG win the game by 10 for the Bills.

Having all of our key players 100% healthy for this game would make the biggest difference in the potential outcome.  As many have pointed out here, we have gone into the last couple meetings with them almost with 1 arm tied behind our backs with all the injuries we were dealing with to crucial people.  Hopefully we can get through the Preseason unscathed and have a full healthy roster.  That would be a big step in the right direction.

 

The next thing I think you are going to see is a completely different philosophy on offense.  I think Cook and the other RBs are going to play a key role in helping Allen be better.  But it's not just in the running game.....  No, I think where they can help the most is by chipping their rushers and then getting out in routes in the pass game.  Houston is very aggressive up front and if you can slip the throws in right behind them will force the LBs to run sideways instead of staying in the box all while chipping the ends will allow Dawkins and Brown to have a much better game than they did in previous years.  Throw in a healthy Kincaid that can work the seams up the field and clear out space underneath for Moore and Kincaid to work inside right underneath Kincaid, I think this is the recipe to beat them.  I think the key is to make them feel like they have to cover and can't just rip up the field on every play.  You start hitting some quick things underneath and force them to work east and west with the RBs, it will give Allen some extra time to either find someone open or make the decision to take a lane that may open up for him.  

 

Houston has a great defense.  Honestly, it's the defense McDermott dreamed of deploying but never could because we didn't have the defensive line up front to get it done.  They don't do anything exotic.  You know where their guys are going to be.  Not a lot of mystery, but their spacing is impeccable.  What I want to do is widen that spacing a bit and try to create a bit more space sideline to sideline because we, if we get to the season healthy, will have the players that can win some 1 on 1 battles.  And while I don't think there's a chance we get to 30 or anything like it, because we are playing Stroud, I am not sure we will have to.  Leonhard's job should be keeping their offense to around 20 or less and hope we can be at least 1 better.  Playing them early I think benefits us more than them, not that I think it is a big advantage, though.  While we certainly can lose this game, I actually think the boys will be fired to to change the narrative in that stadium and make a statement.  I also think having Brady, and now Carmichael, having an entire offseason to come up with a completely different game plan by knowing what to expect, will help get us over the hump.

Bills will be ready for them this year.   Game won't be a short week road game.  It the f ing opener.   Time to prepare.

I can get behind this in theory, but at the end of the day, actions > words. I need to see consistent high level production from him, not just a flash game once or twice a season

Their defense is great. Teams need at least two men on every play to try to contain Anderson and he still makes plays. It is early, but Anderson looks to be on a trajectory of being an all time great. He makes the job easier for all of his fellow defenders, some of whom are very good players.

 

This is not to say that Josh can't beat them. He certainly can but it isn't likely to be a cakewalk.

I agree and think that  Stroud is a sub-par qb.

This is an important year for Stroud. He regressed big time last season and I am sure Houston is wondering which QB is he going to be - the one who showed much promise in his rookie season or the one from last year. Looking at his skittishness last year, I tend to think he is average at best, more likely to be lower tier. 

If we score 24+, we should win.

Crazy part is that defense consistently makes our offense look silly but the games are still oddly close.

I know this is only week 1 but this game is more important than many realize. Could possibly decide the #1 seed. Along with the Bills the Texans are one of those teams that will be in the mix for #1 seed. It would be nice to get the head-to-head tiebreaker over them with a week 1 win if it comes down to that.

It's exactly why so many of us are excited to see what this new defense can do.

 

McDermott's scheme relied on a pass rush with the front four...which he didn't have unless they blitzed. Buffalo had no dominant pass rusher. Groot was the only Buffalo Bill to even touch Bo Nix in that Denver playoff game. 3x times with no team sacks. 

 

This new scheme under Leonhard: the pass rush, blitzers can come from anywhere: D-line, LBers, DBs. I'm thinking Chubb and Groot mostly, and yet, because the offense doesn't know who to look out for, Oliver will have his way too. Michael Hoecht stated he thinks that Oliver will have a great season, and I think so too.

Agreed. If their Offense can take any sort of step up from last season they could be a Sleeper team to win the AFC. I think their Defense is that good

With that said as acknowledged in my original post I am still skeptical about seeing any significant improvement from their Offense this year.

We played our worst because we have had zero answers for the Texans defense.  Its not like the Bills are just coming out flat every time they come to Houston.  Houston's defense has given josh two of his worst career games as judged by QBR and 2 of the 10 or so worst games of his career since 2020 when he emerged as a real QB.

I do agree with this.  We had zero answers for the Texans defense but we were in both games until the very end.  Both games were still for the taking on the last drives.

They held the best QB in the league to his worst performances....still could have won the game.  

I think we have finally have an answer on the outside and that to me makes the difference.

 

I am not as nervous for this game as most.
