Some Week 1 Discussion: How Good is Houston's Defense?

The last two seasons, the Texans caught the Bills right in the middle of their mid-season slump.

Both times they were able to take advantage of our outside WRs not getting open, leading to bad throws and sacks.

 

With a new HC, I would hope the Bills will be focused and ready to go Week 1.  

The two big questions for me are how well DJ Moore and our new Left Guard can get on the same page with the offense.

I think Stroud is one of those QB's who has the physical skillset but doesn't have the mental one. So if things aren't perfect he's going to fail.

The biggest question is whether that Buffalo offensive line and RBs will be as good without O-line coach Aaron Kromer, who retired.  Last season, 8 sacks on Josh...Yikes!

 

Wouldn't you anticipate the dome to be closed?

I think they are closer then people remember. Defense had 5 All Pros that year, Urlacher was the foundation and is HOF, Lance Briggs had 7 pro bowls, Mike Brown at safety was on the 2nd team all decade. Problem is they lost in the SB whereas the Ravens, Seahawks, & Broncos all won in relatively dominating fashion.

Actually, I think that Grossman only played a couple of games in 2005 because of injury.   Otherwise it was mostly rookie Kyle Orton handing off to Matt Forte who ran behind a great offensive line that included former Bills LG Ruben Brown.

This is a team you have to beat like 17-10. 
 

it will only be a tough game because the offense will want to come out and try to play big. They will need to resist that urge.

 

I agree we have to play smart, but it doesn't have to be a 17-10 style game either. 

 

As long as we're not turning the ball over, and as long as our defense is decent, there's no reason we can't punish their mistakes like the Patriots did last year.

 

If Drake Maye & the inept Patriots post-season offense could throw 3 TDs & win 28 - 16 against them, there's no reason Allen & co. couldn't do the same if we're not forcing the issue. Just like you said, take the points when you can, avoid turnovers, and trust the other 2 phases of your team to succeed on their end.

that roof hasn't been opened for a Texans home game in 2 years, so I expect it will for sure be closed

Our motto for this game should be...Shut em down with our D and just score more than they do. That will probably have to be our motto all year.

I know that's kinda like DUH, but better wording than win in a shootout....or just score 35 every week.

It will be a loss for Buffalo I'm afraid. Houston is the House of Horrors for our franchise and for Josh. We may go three and three over the first six games. Everyone will be crying and complaining including me, but we'll make the playoffs at 12 and 5 or 11 and 6, and THEN see if we can pass the real test in the playoffs. If the defense comes together by the end of the season like I believe it will, this will be our Super Bowl year. It's not how you start. It's how you finish.

That first six is rough and 4-2 would feel amazing but 3-3 your fine. They very realistically could be 3-4 after their first 7 and people will panic… but the schedule softens and I believe the back half they will come together on D which will make a huge difference.

Last year the roster we trotted into Houston was really weak compared to what we will have week 1 in 2026.

 

Bosa had his club hand and did nothing, Oliver and Hoyt were out, as were Jackson and carter.  Walker wasn't fully formed nor was sanders.  We had aged poy at safety.  We had shot taron Johnson and middling at best lb play.

 

Now we have the above my missing guys back or more experienced, along w Chubb and Parker, and depth is better too.

 

On o we will add kinkaid (who was hurt) and moore.  Those two guys are far and away our best at those positions and may end up near the top of the NFL at the end of the season.  Notably, our OL was a wreck.  Spencer brown shouldn't have played at all, and had to sit out much of that game and was out the following week, and dawkins missed the following week and shoulda been out that game too with a concussion.  He was a mess.

 

Our passing o was the worst it had been all season.  Cook ripped off a big run, and davis had a magic kick return, but we couldn't sustain much outside of the last drive which was a miracle with the hook and ladder.  Davis dropped a would be scoring position pass (imagine an injured street guy starting at x vs dj moore?  What an upgrade) and Dawkins had a penality on 4th and 1 on our second last play.

 

Mims played QB for them, but he was better than stroud was last season.  I think we kick ass all over Houston this year.

Week 1 and Bills will have a new defense. Hopefully that keeps Stroud off balance. Get a few short fields. 

Lots of quick throws to the flats and Kincaid in the seam will slow their pass rush.

Lots of concern with the red zone offense but happy with D after week 1...

Week one is good because no one knows how different a Brady called game will look with him as the HC.

That D is legit at all 3 levels. I would say their the best unit in the NFL.

 

But CJ Stroud will prevent them from ever winning anything. He's just not very good when the lights are brightest.

Texans defense is nasty. If we had that defense or if Josh was on that team, Josh would win the next 4 superbowls. Maybe more if they could keep the team all together.

 It's the new scheme he is in with an aggressive attacking 3-4. If the players can stay healthy, 🤞 they should seriously kick some proverbial arse.

Here’s the thing.  Yes, they have beat us two years in a row but we did everything we could to give them the game….still close at the end.  They have squeaked by us when we player at our worst.
