It’s hilarious now much Cook discounts here. Cook has been better and way more dependable than Walker.  https://www.sports-reference.com/stathead/football/versus-finder.cgi?player_id2=CookJa01&player_id1=WalkKe00&request=1&utm_source=pfr&utm_id=WalkKe00&utm_campaign=2023_01_wdgt_player_comparison&utm_medium=sr_xsite
I get the position value but he is literally our 2nd best player. He has gotten better every year. He was the best player in the AFC title game and would have been the main reason we went to the SB (should have given him the ball even more). If you remove QBs, he is 4th in CAREER ypc! https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/rush_yds_per_att_career.htm

but yeah, he’s completely replaceable.

I feel like I took crazy pills and time-traveled to last summer when the board was flooded with bad/incorrect Cook takes. Even worse that the same bad takes are being reposted even after he proved them all wrong last season.

Yup but it’s the longevity and injury risk.

some brilliant fans didn’t want to pay Cook $10 million while paying all the mid WRs we have paid. RB used to be the best position but you should try to move to another position if you have nfl dreams.

Not saying you’re wrong but Cook’s last 3 years vs Barkley’s last 3 are very comparable.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/4379399/james-cook-iii
https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/3929630/saquon-barkley

Well yes that's why we paid him the money because statistically he's right there

The difference is.. most Thoroughbred running bags have a specific look.. Jonathan Taylor saquon Barkley's , bijon Robinsons, Derrick Henry's , Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch..  have the body to withstand the physical pounding .. even a Curtis Martin was a good amount bigger

So you have to ride him while he's hot and he's earned it... But he also might be done being a thousand yard rusher at 28

It all depends how he keeps his speed

It would be a good move to send him to someone else prior to his contract demands, IMO. Look at Walker in Seattle. Great talent, but RBs just arent worth the $$$. If we could get another year out of him and then a few draft pics, I'd consider that a win.

WhyTF would we get rid of our 2nd best player in the middle of our Super Bowl window, when all he needs is an extra $3M-5M/yr?

Are we this deep in the offseason where we're pulling out all the bad takes from last year?

I get your point but there are always outliers. Stephon Curry was a frail guard who struggled with injuries early in his career. Next to Josh Allen, I don’t think there has been a Bill in my lifetime that has gotten consistently better every year than Cook. These are his college stats; https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/james-cook-2.html

he just rushed for 1,600 yards on 5 ypc. Guy is a superstar and gets treated like he is some dime a dozen replacement level rb (not you but in general). It’s insane.

He definitely a star

The problem is star running back could last 1 year in the NFL or seven.. Peyton hillis came out of nowhere and led the NFL in rushing one year.. now I'm not saying he's Peyton hillis but guys break through for one star season

He's going to be somewhere in between.. I say he's probably got two to four good years left

Playing next to Josh Allen does help him immensely so that can keep his longevity another year or two longer

This is reaching the Stephon Gilmore (he sucks to bills fans, then becomes a DPOY) level takes because they don’t smile enough.

I mean that valid obviously but he really does a great job avoiding big hits. And he hits home runs as good as almost any rb in the nfl currently.

Absolutely

His ability to avoid big hits is one of his greatest assets.. that with his vision

As I said and I've been saying it for years to me he's kind of in a Chris Johnson light mold.. not as world class speed but still NFL deadly speed

Chris Johnson has around 10,000 yards but basically was done being crazy effective by 29 or 30

Cook still has some time with his speed and good productivity but its finite..  he continues to avoid the big hits he's going to last longer

Look, at the end of the day, I'm a BILLS fan. And if saving money on Cook means we can spend money elsewhere, then great.

But at the same time, if our 2nd best player who is severely underpaid asks for another few Million/year, I don't sweat cutting him a check. Better spent on him than... checks notes... Larry Ogunjobi who we have nearly $3M tied up in dead money and get nothing for it, or Curtis frickin Samuel....

He's also proven he's strong enough to truck players over on his way to the end zone. So I think there is more strength and sturdiness there then his silhouette might show.

Great comparison, because neither... smiled on draft day... and there will always be a good amount of fans who cant get past that for some reason.

Chris Johnson ran tough too.. he ( James Cook had a too upright style coming in)

When you run with that speed it always brings impact... He's Bringing more kinetic energy...

What he needed to do and what he did was get in the lab with a running back coach and his brother.. get his pad level and chest over his toes and stop being so upright

That literally takes his explosiveness and turns it into a hammer at the point of attack when he was upright he was the nail...

As a guy who played running back in college that was very noticeable to me.. how he got his pad level much better.. his chest over his toes.. and he started delivering impacts which n NFL running back should do

Even tiny running backs can deliver blows you need to have good technique.. Darren sproles was tiny and he was a phenomenal blocker because technique.. 5'6 sproles could be a hammer because of pad level

Because give him 2 years and he is toast.

I love him as a player right now, and I have no doubt this season will be a good one, too. After that, take what you can get and move on because the probability that he is the same player as right now is pretty slim. Plus the demand for more money will be there as well.

It was also funny to me to see everyone praise the $15M/yr deal Shakir got, but so many wanted nothing to do with Cook at the same amount. “It’s the market,” they said. Contracts should be relative to value, is Shakir or Palmer more valuable to this offense than Cook? I like that RBs - who touch the ball far more than any WR - are starting to realize their value again. They should all be short 3 year deals like this since it is a position that’s run into the ground.

James Cook III is the 2nd best player on this team;  sometimes, he is even better than #17 on that given day.

Weird energy to have for the 2nd best player on the team.

So I guess this means the Bills will be passing a lot more this season. Beane can’t afford to have Cook lead the league in rushing again.

There's only one two-time rushing champ in the last 15 years

History says James Cook wasn't going to win it regardless

Using historical data and metrics it points to somebody like Bijon or Gibbs or a breakthrough like Ashton genty

You gotta think with your head, not your heart. At the end of the day, he's an NFL running back. Most of them don't last very long.

I'm saying regardless even if we gave him 300 plus carries history says he isn't winning again

I fully got the sarcasm in your post I'm saying that even if they ran him into the ground he probably wont get it

The turnover for the rushing leader in the NFL is high.. fully caught the sarcasm

That we're going to throw so we don't have to pay him another big contract lol

I’ve got that pick and until things change I’m taking Gibbs. Both unbelievable backs, but Gibbs scores and Montgomery is now gone so more TDs incoming. Better team, better QB. Gibbs be The Man
