It's nice to see running back's valued again

It's been overdue for the past 3 years, trend began to change a couple years ago.  It only makes sense, teams are running more and the teams with the better rushing attacks tend to do better than the teams with good passing attacks.

Cook was close to the 2000 yard threshold last season, so yeah, he does that this season he’s asking minimally $20,000,000 per.

Is there room for that kind of contract?

If Brady and Carmichael can get the early Kamara-esque receiving numbers out of Cook (80 receptions for 600-800 yds) he'd be well worth that... at least for a few seasons, anyway.

Good.

People always talk like RBs are easy to find & replace, yet we were complaining for Allen's first 5 years that we needed better RBs. Chiefs fans have been desperate for an improved run game & now think they're going to be great with Kenneth Walker III.

Cook's success was a big reason why Allen was able to win MVP & decrease his turnovers, yet people still talk like RBs aren't important.

I actually wish rookie RBs were on a unique bracket/salary structure vs other rookies. There's a rookie cap based on position & where you were drafted, but most players get to look forward to their first huge contact after their rookie deal is up.

Not RBs though...They usually get used & abused on their rookie deals, then get the whole "well you got a lot of miles on you" or "RBs are a dime a dozen" excuses as to why they're going to get low-balled. If that's the case, allow them to get paid more up front.

Glad Bijan was able to get paid now, because his prime could be short. Or he could be like Derek Henry & be dominant for many years. Who knows!

Cook's cap hit this year: $5.8M  :o

Then he's at about $14M the next 3 years.

If he has another monster season and makes a thing about it, we could easily bump him up to $17M-19M/year for the remaining 3 years.

I mistakenly thought he was only signed through 2027. He can go pound salt. 🙃

That was THE reason anybody gave pause to Cook's extension last summer.

The true dual threat RBs have earned their big contracts!! Overall,  the guys who are not dynamic in the pass game, have shown to not be worth elite pay. Really D-Henry is the one outlier in a long time.

Cook certainly has potential to be a CMC type player, and that'd open a ton of doors for the offense. While hes had good stretches catching the ball... hes never been a true dual threat.....

....Id love nothing more than for us to "have" to pay him as a dual threat!

If the NFLPA doesn't get this reworked for RBs, then that org is worthless. Its pure greed by the owners it hasn't been fixed by now.

Bump that positions rookie wage scale and/or shorten the teams rights by a year.

It's crazy that Zay Flowers is making $65 million more than Bijan (with a 4th year). Running backs are still way undervalued. No one would say they would choose Zay over Bijan if they were starting a team from scratch

I like cook but I don't think he has any of the route running ability to be in the Christian McCaffrey mold

He's more like Chris Johnson light

Which isn't a disrespect cuz Chris Johnson has the most yards from scrimmage in a season in NFL history and he's not Chris Johnson fast.. but he does play like that but a hair slower

He can catch the ball and he runs decent routes but he'll never be a 80-90 catch guy who makes linebackers fall Down from route running like CMC

If Cook has another monster season he will have earned a raise

Atlanta doesn't have a $55mil QB1.  But, they may be paying some of Cousins sal in NV,  Robinson is a true all Pro and would get paid.  But, the comp might be team specific.  I will stay w our QB1 and let Bean figure out how to pay others.

It was also funny to me to see everyone praise the $15M/yr deal Shakir got, but so many wanted nothing to do with Cook at the same amount. “It’s the market,” they said. Contracts should be relative to value, is Shakir or Palmer more valuable to this offense than Cook? I like that RBs - who touch the ball far more than any WR - are starting to realize their value again. They should all be short 3 year deals like this since it is a position that’s run into the ground.

We got Cook at an unbelievable under market deal.  Beane was a wizard there.  And Cook's agent kind of sold him out.  He is nowhere near top 10 in pay at RB now.

I kind of feel bad Cook.  (And I usually side with management on contracts.)  This will be his 5th year.  RB's only have so many years in their prime.  Can someone post the top 20 RB's contracts for 2026?

I mean that is a fair deal for both sides because his numbers are not the same if he's on the Jets

His numbers aren't the same with no run blocking...

And he's realistically not as dynamic as a saquon Barkley... He is in that second tier of running backs 4 5 6 7 8.. and all those guys are close..  he's not built like a traditional Thoroughbred which can impact his long-term durability also

I think his deal was perfectly fair.. if anything the Kenneth Walker deals are too high.. and the rookie just got kicked in the top five so he's getting a lot of money

Every year new signings outpace the old signings... We had five running backs signed good size contracts recently

So before those guys cook was 5th place average per year.. perfectly reasonable the new deals pushed him outside the top 10 but that is how the NFL works with contracts

Yup but it’s the longevity and injury risk.

some brilliant fans didn’t want to pay Cook $10 million while paying all the mid WRs we have paid. RB used to be the best position but you should try to move to another position if you have nfl dreams.

Not saying you’re wrong but Cook’s last 3 years vs Barkley’s last 3 are very comparable.

If going into the season where he turns 28 he holds out I hope the Bills trade him as fast as they can.

It would be a good move to send him to someone else prior to his contract demands, IMO. Look at Walker in Seattle. Great talent, but RBs just arent worth the $$$. If we could get another year out of him and then a few draft pics, I'd consider that a win.

It’s hilarious now much Cook discounts here. Cook has been better and way more dependable than Walker.  https://www.sports-reference.com/stathead/football/versus-finder.cgi?player_id2=CookJa01&player_id1=WalkKe00&request=1&utm_source=pfr&utm_id=WalkKe00&utm_campaign=2023_01_wdgt_player_comparison&utm_medium=sr_xsite
I get the position value but he is literally our 2nd best player. He has gotten better every year. He was the best player in the AFC title game and would have been the main reason we went to the SB (should have given him the ball even more). If you remove QBs, he is 4th in CAREER ypc! https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/rush_yds_per_att_career.htm

but yeah, he’s completely replaceable.

For folks comparing him to Bijan, Saquon, or even CMC... Cook could get a decent raise and still be well under those guys.

If I were Jimbo, I'd be questioning my agent right now.
