Maybe I’m just more optimistic but it feels like the reports this year are mostly positive.

Someone comment here that he had some reps at MLB with Bernard at ILB, and made the point that ILB probably is a better position for Bernard in this scheme. If that can happen, with Williams coming in when the Bills want to be in a true 4-3, that's a talented group.

No, I was there. Kaleb actually pulled a cordless drill and deck screws out of his pads. What couldn't be seen in the skirmish was players hurriedly unscrewing dalton from the ground.

The drive is there (openly said he wants to be the best --- I'm sure he'd be looking at Ray Lewis), the physical traits is there (he's reportedly having thick core at 235lb but fairly good speed. For reference, Ray Lewis had thick cored body, came to his draft at 235lb even though he hyped it up to 240lb in an era where 235 was considered inadequate for LBs). What he needs to be one of the top ILB is instincts. The great ones all have that. We won't know that until he plays actual NFL games. All the coaching from Leonhard and others is nice, and I'm sure he's going to get on to how to watch films with his work ethics. But instincts is something you can't coach.

Seems like a combo of bad luck last year & better luck this year.

 

One thing I do suspect and think has been touched on here before... i hope the new staff is more science minded with lighter practice days stuffed in the mix. Give out veteran rest a bit more.

 

Dudes like Kincaid and Oliver should have snap count restrictions. Look for trends of what made their bodies start to breakdown in previous years and keep them significantly under that.

 

Whether its gameday,  practices, or accumulative between the 2.

 

Id rather these dudes get 5 less snaps a game and play full time, then vice versa.

 

Itd be interesting to hear the staffs procedure/analysis on what trends they've picked up on, and plans to implement.

Jim Leonard  doesn't really run any 43 style ... Don't expect to see three off ball linebackers like a 4-3 

 

Our old defense there was a Mike a will and a SAM.. all off ball

 

Now it's getting transitioned to 2 on ball and 2 off ball... Two inside linebackers and two outside linebackers... 

 

The two inside backers are the mike and the will... Think Patrick Willis Navarro bowman.. off ball

 

The two outside linebackers are now basically stand up defensive ends... On ball 

 

Bernard was never going to play outside linebacker in this scheme he's has to be an inside backer.. doesn't have the size the length the strength or the traits to play on the edge 

 

Strictly an inside linebacker in this new defense he has no edge ability at 225 lb 

 

Even right now our two olbs are going to be Bradley Chubb and Gregg and they're both 260 lb.. outside linebackers are basically going to be stand up ends...

 

So our inside linebacker group is going to look like Bernard Dorian Williams keo Buffalo Joe, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

 

And the Mike and the will is becoming ever more interchangeable just like safety's have been because you don't want to be so non versatile you're like Brandon spikes.. those guys are out of the league now 

 

So it's going to be two inside backers and basically keo Bernard or Williams are going to be interchangeable depending on the look

 

The traditional 2 inside linebacking positions in the 3-4 the Mike and the will are becoming even more interchangeable... It's not like the days of trotting out a 250 Mike and a 235 lb will with distinct roles 

 

They're all 230 to 235.. and they all can run... Making the roles a little bit more interchangeable

I hope you're right. On paper they do look very good. If Moore plays to his potential it'll obviously open things up for the other receivers and Kincaid, and if they work the backs more into the passing offense as well then they could really have something.

 

I think with the defense it'll be way more aggressive than years past and unlike the bend but don't break style of McD's scheme we will probably see a lot more plays by opposing offenses going for big yards, but I'm hoping they'll also get to the QB more, create more turnovers and generally have more drives when they get teams off the field faster.

 

Having a high scoring offense will put pressure on teams to keep up (that's one reason I disliked the ball control of the last few years, especially in the first half) which means the defense can pin their ears back and be more aggressive. I hope Brady goes the route of blowing teams away in the first half and then employing the ball control in the 2nd half to really tire out the defenses and milk the clock.

Exactly. Catch 22 of a play.

 

On one hand, what a throw by Josh in between all those guys and what a catch by Moore in between that mass of humanity.

 

On the other, you've got our unquestioned top three DB's (with CJGJ out) in Benford, Hairston, and Bishop blanketing him in triple coverage and it's still a completion? Ugh.

 

I know that's just one play in practice. But, in a vacuum, that doesn't instill confidence that the Pass D is going to be better with the new coaches and new scheme.

Yeah I don't know. Joe Marino had some fantasy guy on his podcast recently. He railed against Beane for not investing in weapons around Allen, and then in the same breath called the DJ Moore trade a huge overpay made out of desperation. I really don't get it. Either you pay a premium for talent or you don't have talent. Admittedly Moore has exceeded even my own high expectations, his production his last year in Chicago made me wonder if he had fallen off a bit, but instead he seems to be in the best shape of his life and immediately has become Allen's go-to guy.

We often convince ourselves that what we have is good. We did it through the drought. Moore is a legit NFL WR. He is a good one. You had a bunch of 3’s and below. Josh elevated them. Now, you have a legit, borderline 1, and he looks like a superstar. Moore can play. The difference between him and guys that have played on the boundary is noticeable.
