DE Clowney signs with Texans

I know he’s not what he used to be, but with that defense already, good thing we face the Texans week one.

 

Hopefully it’ll take the entire Texans defense a few games (at least one 😃) to warm up to what they’re used to being.

I hate to say it, but that’s a great signing for the Texans.  He will not have to carry the load there and can be used as rusher in key  situations, 20/30 snaps per game maybe.  Great compliment to what is already a feared pass rush, and decent insurance in case of injury.

Kirk Cousins gets a lot of crap for his career earnings, but Clowney should be right in the same conversation.   Averages 5.5 sacks a year.   Never had 10 sacks in a season.   Made 101,000,000 million, which comes out to 1.5 million dollars a sack.    We give Groot a lot of crap for not having great sack numbers but he is a deal compared to Clowney.

I  believe he’s very adept at setting the edge to defend the run … probably his best attribute. The film of him steamrolling some hapless 225 pound OT widely circulated prior to the draft did him no favors. He’s a favorable comparison to Rousseau IMO.

He would have led/tied the Bills in sacks 3 of the last 5 years (2025 - 8.5, 2024 - 5.5, and 2021 - 9) would have been only 1 back of Floyd in 2023 (10.5 vs 9.5).  Only 2022 when he had 2 would he have been far behind leader Von who had 8 before getting hurt.  That year with the Browns he was disgruntled with how they were using him and he sat the final game.

You knew eventually someone would give him a vet minimum 1 yr. Rental.  What surprises me is Von not being picked up yet, by someone still lacking a pass rush.  He had what 9 sacks last year.  Even at 37, some team will need him for a one year rental.

The signing itself is Meh, Clowney's always been overrated and I doubt he has much left in the tank

 

But in this case Houston's Defense is already scary without him

Now put him in a Bills system that wasn't known for sack production and see how he does.     My original point wasn't about him being better or worse than someone like Aj Epenesa, it was about him being overpaid for his production his entire career.

The Bills are gonna score 10 points tops week one and Josh may take 8 sacks. Just an atrocious matchup given what they can do and so much new on Buffalo's side week 1.

 

If there was ever a game to lean into Steelers 2000s style football and just grind the game by running and controlling the clock it is this one.

Last year Dawkins sustained a concussion early and Brown played with one arm until he had to be replaced… coming off a short week, on the road. 
 

Now add DJ Moore and Dalton Kincaid to the mix, who we didn’t have last year vs them. 
 

I’m not saying we’re going to score 30 on that Defense, but as the Bills stand right now vs how the Texans stand right now, (both teams fully healthy) I would be extremely disappointed if it looked like last year.  
 

My bigger concern is if Leonhard will have this Defense ready to go from jump as we are going to need to make sure that mediocre Offense in Houston doesn’t find their groove knowing what our Offense is up against.
