He was in position to get a Super Bowl last year without Josh's fumble. Particularly if he ever gets one really good pass rusher, I think he'll be in a chance to rack up some Lombardis. Good luck getting another QB like Allen. Just sayin. 1 Quote
SCBills Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Early in camp but it seems to me that Brady has the benefit of a lot of players coming back off injury and early in their careers who look like they made jumps this offseason. It also seems, early, that Beane nailed this past Draft. This may not be fair to McDermott, but I just don’t know if it’s bad luck, bad timing or if I’d feel like these guys are in positions to blow up if he was still here. The DL dominated with Hoecht & Oliver and then we promptly lost both of them after two games. They’re now back, plus a 1 for 1 swap Chubb/Bosa, along with Bernard back, hopefully healthy and whole bunch of guys who put in work this offseason. Offense may essentially be the same group as last year plus a healthy Kincaid and DJ Moore. Problem is I have faith in guys to make jumps with Brady and Leonhard, whereas I lost that faith under McDermott and his scheme. 2 1 Quote

The biggest difference with McDermott (and pretty much all other fired coaches) is he isn’t going to have a better QB in his next role. It’s tough to go further than you have when you’re taking a step, and potentially very large step, back at the most important position in sports. I don’t believe a lesser QB increases anyone’s chances of winning. I’m of the belief that McDermott will be a candidate next year. I don’t believe he can pick any job he wants though. If the Bills look sluggish and get bounced in the WC round that’ll be the best thing for him. If they go to the Super Bowl and/or get the 1 seed, he’s going to have a lot of questions to answer in the interview process. He makes sense in a rebuilding situation regardless. A thought: what if the Bengals go 9-8 and miss the playoffs due to another crappy defensive showing? Four years of missing the playoffs with that QB and offense would have to lead to a change, right? McDermott might be a perfect fit for them, and Burrow is roughly as good as Josh. For the record, I expect the Bengals to win 11+ games this season. But you never know. And it would also be very Bengal-y to hire a Marvin Lewis clone and do all that again Quote

But if you had to pick from contenders, Bengals would be most likely. We're talking "most likely out of all the unlikely scenarios". 1 Quote

McDermott is a good defensive coach and an excellent culture builder, and were the Bengals to identify those issues as their two main hurdles, he'd make sense. 1 1 Quote

I think McDermott would be a very tough sell 1 Quote

Cleveland, Miami, and the NY Jets are all teams I think that he would turn down even if they were the only ones available. I'd say there is a high probability that the Jets fire Glenn too. Other teams: Tampa, Dallas, Philly, Bengals, Arizona, and the Colts. Carolina maybe. Minnesota, who let Darnold leave over McCarthy, screwed the pooch too. Whichever team falls on their face the hardest this season...gonna be interesting to see. Quote

The last two drafts Beane finally realized his strength is the middle rounds. 5 keepers last year (would have been 6 if strong stayed healthy). 5-6 again this year. Play to your strengths. Quote

Burrow: Save from this defense and terrible game management. McDermott is GREAT against the teams a good team should beat, but the Bengals lose too often to such teams despite being better. Quote
