CJGJ = Problem Child?

As many of you have, I have been tuned into the offseason/Training Camp and I have to be honest, I am seeing something brewing that makes me feel uneasy.  It's CJ Gardner-Johnson.  When they first signed him, I was like ok, they got a dawg style guy with some talent.  Hey we need some dawgs and this could help our defense.  However, after seeing the constant sh***t talking and now this whole streaming "thing" with Brady and then going live after to talk about it.  It's clear to me this guy just doesn't get it.  Almost like some Antonio Brown vibes.  He has had issues with his former teams.  Quite a few teams I might add. 

 

There was a certain culture developed here over the past 8-9 years. You heard Jim Leonhard reference it in his presser regarding the level of professionalism that is displayed by the players.  I fully understand if it gets out of control they can just cut him, but I hope this guy doesn't kill the vibes and make training camp unenjoyable for everyone. This can have a ripple effect throughout the team.  He appears to be the exact type of player (attitude and maturity) we have tried to avoid over the last 9 years.

Of course he is a problem child. He is exactly the type of player that we avoided during the McDermott era.  Players like CJGJ test the chemistry of a team. Will he get in line, exist as a one off, or create more chaos.

 

Time will tell.

All reports of him on the field are stellar, he's been a leader & playing great. If he can keep doing that, the off-field nonsense won't really matter.

Seems to me like his teammates love his energy and vibe. 
 

He’s the same exact type of player that McD avoided.  New coach, his culture. Some things will change. That was obvious the moment we signed this kid

 

i’m really excited about him.  If it fails, I don’t think it will ruin our culture

He is absolutely not my type of personality. I find him extremely tiresome. Is he capable of being a problem child? 100%. Have I seen anything yet that makes me very concerned? Not really.

The pearl clutching over our beloved culture being ruined is unnecessary. The Bills released Stefon Diggs, who put together the greatest WR seasons in franchise history AND took like a $30M dead cap hit to do so. There is no threat to the culture that, candidly, we have overrated a little. Injecting a little of what CJGJ brings is imperative IMO. If he isn’t the guy to bring that, cut him and get a different guy with that mentality. Based on all reports through 2 days though, he has been outstanding on the field.

I disagree strongly on the bolded. But I also don't think it must be avoided at all costs.

He has a history of wearing out his welcome (6 teams in the last 5 years).

 

It'll be interesting to see if he can break that pattern.

 

And of course if he's part of a Super Bowl winning team in Buffalo, all will be well.

The Bills knew exactly what they were signing up for, we'll see how it goes but it appears that his on the field performance and leadership albeit early on appears to be positive.

Not a fan of the MAN, but a fan of the player. Guys that get can get under your skin are a commodity. See Bill Romanoswki, Ndamokong Suh, Lyle Alzado, etc. Not saying CJGJ is quite on their talent level, but this defense could use a guy of that mold.

Here's the thing. You develop culture over that long of a period so you CAN sign a guy or two like CJGJ. And it seems he's well liked by the players at this point. 

 

You're right, tho. He may kill the "vibes". But not having guys that are a bit outside the normal like him over the last 9 years...how has that finished each year? I mean, I'm really happy the team gets along well and does like Pizza Friday at Dawkins house. But having a team of best buddies isn't really lining the trophy case. 

 

I support bringing in a few guys that have had success and can be a little nutty.

Off-field stuff does matter unfortunately. There's a reason Terrell Owens bounced around so much despite being the best player on the field for the majority of his career.

Ride or die for one year..  Evaluate next off season.  He brings a skill AND edge that position needs.

Not having enough guys with "edge" or whatever has had zero impact on us failing to win a championship. 

 

However, what HAS is not having enough guys with elite talent. If they have avoided adding elite talent because of character that has had an impact. But failing to have enough "edge" is not a reason.

He will be one of the most loved Bills for this upcoming season. His talent will show as it always does. he hits like a dawg. He trash talks a lot but not as much as Josh Allen. CJGJ will bring our secondary into the promise land.
