Tyler Bass and the yips

Every time Bass comes out on the field, even for extra point tries, I never feel comfortable that he's gonna make the kick. It was nice having Prater last year because the kicking game was one less source of BBFS. I hope we end up bringing him back.

Even when the kicker position is set, they always bring in 2 for training camp. Why isn't there another kicker at camp?

Not sure why, but feel Prater is in the mix if Bass stumbles.

I would want to make sure he can make the kicks and stay healthy asap. Assuming he's been working out in the offseason it shouldn't be an issue since he's been hurt so much.

This is why in imo a GM should never pay a lot for a kicker, they are good, till they aren’t, and when “aren’t”happens, it’s time to go to plan B, jmo. Fingers crossed Bass is healed, healthy and has his mojo working,

People forget that Bass came into the league with the yips. After being lights out in his first preseason, he then missed kicks in the real games to start his career. He said it was the first Jets game where he found belief in himself again and if you remember, he missed two kicks early in that one as well before making them all late.

Actually under Beane they have tended not to. Or if they have taken a second guy into camp he hasn't lasted more than a week or so. They certainly haven't been a two kickers in the pre-season team for a number of years. Hence we saw Ray Davis kick last pre-season when Bass was niggled. They have been largely a 1 kicker in camp team since this GM has been here.

Has Bass even had the yips? From what I can tell he’s been perpetually injured almost his whole career. When he’s healthy he’s fine. Not sure why Beane gave him that ridiculous contract.

I dont think I will ever feel as comfortable with him as I did last year with the 60 year old guy.

Because Bass is mental and would immediately fall to pieces. I have a feeling Prater is in their back pocket and they will allow Bass to cement or seal his own fate in TC/Preseason.

There was a time when I felt very comfortable sending Bass out there, especially for the long kicks of 50-55+ yards. That was prior to his big contract and injury, not a recent thing. I hope he can get back to where he was physically and mentally.

0.1% chance he makes that kick Prater did late in the Denver game... which is easy to forget considering all the BS that came after that.  He's a head case, and what stinks is that the best thing for his career is a fresh start elsewhere.  Maybe there are enough new faces around to trick his brain, but I doubt it.

 

Maybe we can pry a good kicker from a bad team in the next 12mos? Finding a way to get someone we can trust is vastly underestimated.  The position is harder than ever, and bad teams dont need good kickers the way that good teams do.

 

What I dont understand is how they dont grow on trees...

 

-138 FBS teams each year find a starter

-Kickers play longer than anyone else (15yrs isnt crazy)

Of all the teams in the NFL that should know you need a really good kicker you can count on with the game on the line, it should be the Bills.  Why that the wr and MLB positions are consistently mischosen on this team is unreal.

Also you might consider wearing eye and face protection.

 

I don't think you'll need hearing protection, but who knows?
