13 Seconds to Mars Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Sorry, I’m a bit more out of the loop when it comes to anything non-Bills, but TRY to stay familiar with division rivals. Just heard this on a podcast and was completely blown away. How did I not know this? This is one of those insane stats that I think will never be broken. Especially in this day & age where the parity & passing is at an all-time high. And they had more games to do it. Can anyone provide an explanation? Just seems impossible in the modern NFL. IMO, ownership and the FO need to go if that team ever wants to compete. I know he’s a bridge QB, but a 35 year old Geno Smith? Come on, man. 🤦♂️ They’ve had 8 top 10 draft picks (2 #11’s) and 16 total 1st rounders in the past 10 years. Plus, top 10 picks in all preceding rounds to right their ship. It’s not only their drafting, but development as well. Sam Darnold proved that (among other coaches/players) when he left that ***** hole. The Bills weren’t able to get over the hump during the drought because of similar issues, (Ownership, bad drafting, QB play, etc) but they stayed competitive which ultimately kept them from getting those premier draft picks. Nabbing Josh Allen was pure GM magic, but I firmly believe they were well on their way up even if they didn’t get him. Even Cleveland was able to get it together and at least build a formidable defense and run game with their high 1st round selections until they got Baker (then screwed that up in the long run.) Jets are the most dysfunctional franchise in sports. Divisional rival or not, I feel for the fans who spend their hard earned money. They will most definitely surpass the Bills drought (they need 2 more seasons.) The record is 25 years and this was back in the 40s. With the gauntlet of the AFCE and AFC as a whole, it’s a real possibility they could hit that mark. Rookies and FA’s alike now know it’s a death sentence going there Their pure dysfunction of that over the past near 2 decades is almost impressive in a train wreck sort of way. Kind of like Detroit’s winless season or George Blanda’s 42 interception season. I know this is a Bills forum, but it’s the offseason and I’m discussing the division. Why can’t the Jets get it together? If so, what will it take? Will there ever be an interception-less defense again in the modern NFL? Quote
Augie Posted July 26 Posted July 26 (edited) Where is Nathan Peterman when you need him??? It’s hard to fathom that there wasn’t a tipped or bobbled ball that they couldn’t help but catch. . Edited July 27 by Augie 1 1 4 Quote
Kirby Jackson Posted July 26 Posted July 26 This might sound blasphemous but I think long term the Jets are the biggest threat to the Bills not New England. The Jets are obviously dysfunctional but they’re heading in the right direction. They have a good bit of talent and have 3 firsts (again) next year in that generational draft (their own, Colts and better of Dallas/Green Bay). There’s a world where the Jets have 2 top 5 picks and another in the middle of round 1. In a 2 year span it’s possible that they add something like (David Bailey, Kenyon Sadiqq, Omar Cooper, D’Angelo Ponds, Arch Manning, Cam Coleman and another high end defensive starter). Add that to a good OL, Breece Hall, Will McDonald and Garrett Wilson and you have something going. They are miles ahead of Miami IMO. 1 3 1 Quote

I don’t think the Jets will go anywhere with Aaron Glenn as head coach. I loved him as a player but never understood the hire. I respect your opinion though they do have young talent. 1 Quote

I'm not so sure that multiple high draft picks mean the Jets will turn things around. As the OP said, part of their problem is player development. In 2021 and 2022, they had seven picks in the top 36 spots. Yes, in those two consecutive drafts, they had 5 first-rounders and 2 early second-rounders (picks 2, 4, 10, 14, 26, 34, and 36). Most teams could turn things around with that many high draft picks (and the year before they had the #11 pick and the year after they had the #15 pick). Six top 15 picks in 4 years, Seven 1st round picks in 4 years. They did pick up some good players in that group (Breece Hall, Sauce, Garett Wilson) and has some misses (Zach Wilson, Elijah Moore). And everyone raved about the Jets 2022 draft (they got high grades---mostly because they had 3 first round picks), and the most they could muster were two 7-10 seasons (in 2022 and 2023)...followed by a 5-12 and then a 3-14 season. And just 3-5 years later, 5 of those 7 first round picks (from 2020-2023) are no longer even on the Jets. Yes, they have a new coach, but again as the OP pointed out, changing coaches doesn't seem to be the main problem or doesn't seem to matter (they have had 5 HCs since their last winning season, they've only had 1 winning season in the last 16 years---since Rex Ryan's second year in New York). The issue definitely appears to be higher up, ownership and front office. Because of that history, I am dubious that their current high picks will translate into wins on the field. But, we'll see I guess. 2 1 Quote

He’s there this year because he helps them tank. 😂😂 Next year, with a top 5 QB and that young talent, it is an appealing job (except for Woody). 1 1 2 Quote

They will be getting a guy early in a great class. It’s not fool proof but they will have as good of a chance as anyone to pick their QB. Edited July 26 by Kirby Jackson Quote
BuffaloBillyG Posted July 26 Posted July 26 For me, it's unfathomable how that happens. Many INTs over a season are just luck. A tipped pass at the line. A deflection in the secondary. Bad read or ball thrown by the QB. Honestly, not to even have one during the course of 17 games is very unrealistic. Teams playing against the Jets last year were 515 attempts 336 completions 65% completed 3674 passing yards 36 TDs The thing that pops out to me is the yards. Just 216 passing yards per game which isn't terrible. 2 Quote

billsfan89 Posted July 26 Posted July 26 What’s made even more baffling about that stat is that the Jets have a defensive head coach who was a defensive back. There’s no condition where the coaching is better suited for secondary play. 1 2 Quote

He would be terrible to work for and a major negative for anyone looking at the job. Football coaches can be ego maniacs though. He’s not available obviously but someone like Sean Payton wouldn’t care who he worked for. He would be like, “I’ll come there if you stay out of my way.” 😂😂 1 Quote

They seemed to draft well this last time round and have a lot more picks next year. I think the key is if (when) Glenn gets fired at the end of the season who they bring in, and who they draft to play QB next year. Gino is obviously a stop gap and will probably start next season as well while they get the rookie ready. Hopefully they pick another Wilson and let us off the hook. Quote

Jon Gruden Would be fabulous to watch play out at that dumpster fire. I truly fell for the Bryce Hall, Sauce, Garrett Wilson draft... but that was before they blew up all momentum with the Aaron Rodgers trade. With that said, theres always an "Aaron Rodgers" trade coming from them. No matter how many doubles or solo HRs they hit, you know theyre working OT to find a dumb decision to put them back in the dumpster. Its been my entire adult life. Theres really no reason they should*** be very bad again this year.... but they are so inverse-clutch at being awful, they'll master their own basement destiny. Bizarro-world Mariano Rivera clutch 1 Quote

You don't turn that kind of shltshow around with one draft. They win 5 games tops. 2 1 Quote
