My opinion on this is pretty controversial in that I think and have long thought Collinsworth is the best. I get why his "filler" annoys people in that he does ball wash the star players and the best teams... but his ability to be able to break down a play immediately and his eye for what has actually made a play work is the best. He sees live the blocking technique the guard uses to spring the running back or the way the safety keyed in on the route combination to get up and make a play without needing to wait for the replay. It's really impressive. He can tell me things I might not have seen. I enjoyed Romo early on when he was tipping the plays because again he was adding a value I couldn't necessarily identify with my own eyes but once CBS told him to stop that he became a screeching, cliche ridden, parody of a sportscaster. 

 

Of the others I think Greg Olsen does a pretty good job of giving you the player's perspective, although I'm not always the biggest fan of his delivery style. I think Brady has got a lot better but he is very much pitching at football dummies, his explanation verges on the patronising at times and that is a difficult line to tread. 

 

The overall standard isn't great though. That Ross Tucker is now in CBS's number 2 team tells you that.... Ross is fine, but he isn't particularly insightful.

The reports out of CBS are that Romo also stopped preparing for games after his impressive debut.  Not knowing the rosters or keeping up with injuries and trades.  He was great when he started and regressed in short order.

 

Brady spends soo much time talking about himself that I can't see past it.   Its obvious the guy needs non-stop attention and validation but thats not what viewers are interested in, Tom.

Wonder if CBS started trying to micro manage him, or tell him to dumb down his commentary or anything like that.

 

Ive had similar experiences at jobs where im go-hung go getter, and management comes in trying to steer my boat, when my numbers spoke for themselves (its all cash numbers career, and im not violating ethics/law)... it ends up being discouraging,  and find out they almost prefer you start mailing it in... at that point im annoyed and happy to oblige.

 

Maybe a few too many assumptions but ive seen that story play out a million times with people hired after me too. Nobody bothers the guy in the middle of the pack 🤷‍♂️

I would not be surprised if there were examples from Romo's early days where CBS asked him to tone done the commentary that exposed predictability, poor planning, and sloppy play.  The truth is that football is often controlled chaos and Romo in his first year was tipping plays and already telling the viewers that they were going to get blown up based on the defensive alignment.  He was practically begging for audibles at times.  I'm sure Roger did not appreciate that.  I recall the NFL was reluctant to release All 22 film to fans because of how often assignments are missed.

 

Everything I've read suggests Romo played hardball with CBS and there was resentment over the contract he fought for.  Some criticism may be related to higher expectations on him given the contract but I think there was a clear decline in his performance.  He used to impress me with his insights during the broadcast and the last 2 years he was just another guy but with a rougher voice.

I agree Romo is not what he used to be but I can still hear his intellgence in there, and I think he's better than Collinsworth on the game in some ways. And I agree that the overall standard is not great these days...

i dunno if he was boozed to start in the booth, but he sounds to me like he's had a few every time.  and the later 430 big huge games, i hear him make the pause that an experienced drinker makes to not sound drunk (as opposed to slurring words, or looping drunkenly).

 

pat sommerall used to have 3 martinis a quarter or something.  by the 4th he made madden sound like dennis miller

Umm, CBS paid him hugely based on his “craziest” analyst days. With the reports and his own personal statement, seems like his lifestyle caught up with him (maybe on the job) and he became a dead fish in the booth. CBS didn’t pay for that, and they’re not doing a whole lot to revitalize the latest version of Romo.

Ya I think it was confirmed Romo stopped preparing for games in 2022 when he called Dane Jackson a "budding superstar " haha
