He was my wrestling coach at St. Francis for 1981 & 1982. If memory serves, Coach Smith replaced him thereafter. Bemiller was a nice man, who cared about his student athletes. I actually thought that after retirement I would approach him and see if he was interested in doing a biography. Here's some of what I found out: On January 31, 1968 Briscoe was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 14th round. On October 6th 1968 he became first black QB to start a game in the modern era of pro football. On November 24th against Buffalo, Briscoe threw for 335 yards and 4 TDs, both rookie club records. The 335 yards stood until broken by John Elway in 1983. Briscoe totaled 14 touchdown passes that year in just 5 starts. Before the 1969 season opener, Briscoe discovered that Denver Head Coach Lou Saban intended to use Pete Liske as the starter. Still wanting to play quarterback, Briscoe asked to be released. However after being released Briscoe had a change of heart and decided to sign with the Buffalo Bills as a receiver largely because the Bills already had star Jack Kemp, former Pro Bowler Tom Flores, and another black quarterback with a more prototypical 6-foot-4 and 210-pound frame, James Harris. In another irony, the Bills hired Lou Saban as their Head Coach in 1971, ending any thoughts that Briscoe would ever play quarterback again. He did however enjoy a splendid career as a wide receiver. He led the Bills in touchdown catches in each of his three seasons in Buffalo and led the team in receptions twice. In 1970 he was in the top two in receptions and receiving yards league-wide and became an All-Pro. In 1971 the Bills traded Briscoe to the Miami Dolphins for the first-round draft pick that was used to take Joe DeLamiellure, an eventual Hall of Fame guard. Briscoe went on to win a pair of Super Bowls with Miami and led the undefeated 1972 team with four touchdown receptions. In 1973 he led the Dolphins in receptions, catching more passes than future Hall of Famer, Paul Warfield. A biopic titled The Magician, based on Briscoe's life, has been under development for several years. Canadian actor Lyriq Bent has been approached to portray Briscoe in the film. In 2016, the University of Nebraska Omaha, Briscoe's alma mater, honored him by unveiling a statue. 2 Quote
